About Malgar the Mad

Backstory:

It's hard to speak to Malgar without at some point coming to the topic of his grudge vs Barzillai Thrune, who allegedly tortured him in prison. Or how he was allgedly tricked into selling the souls of both himself and his surviving men to. How? By being partly dazed from years of abuse and malnourishment.

Why? Because he'd once been head of a band of mercenaries taking part in the Thrune civil war. Which had allegedly given them a lot of trouble despite all the devils suddenly joining them. But even if true, it evidently wasn't enough.

What was left of his men deserted upon release and this act got him effectively exiled among dwarvenkind. Realizing he quite literally lost everything; most of his possessions, his remaining youth, what respect he had as soldier, and his *actual* soul, he tried suicide by excessive drinking upon being released from prison. However, this didn’t work. If anything, the excess alcohol only further warped his already damaged mind.

…Or so it might have seemed to the outside world. For Malgar himself claimed he clearly hear the Drunken God himself speak to him, that revenge was yet for the taking, and that any promise, contract or seal could be broken. This… ‘divine promise of revenge’ has basically been all that sustained him in his quest for revenge ever since.

As a recent arrival in the city of Kintaro and without much wealth other than the gear that was supposedly lawfully still his (apparently the market for stolen dwarven gear was small enough for the bastards to be unable to sell it, or so he figured), he settled in the slums for a place to lay low and rest while he gathered his bearings and started collecting rumors.

He has not ventured into the other districts much, but he is a rather vocal drunk in the slums themselves. From a few trips into the other distrcits that he did make, he has tried to garner a reputation for a decrepid, aging dwarf drunk who is simply not worth the time.
All while searching for possible ins to an organized resistance and/or rebellion, of course. And when the news of a first truly large protest reaches him, he is all too quick to join them…

Personality:

Decades of torture, or *ahem* ‘encouraged conversion’ to Asmodeus left part of Malgar’s mind broken. But even prior to that, decades more of fighting and excessive drinking in the name of his actual patron, Cayden Cailean, broke another piece. Now, he’s trapped between his remaining sanity, brain damage from alcohol and fits of rage against house Thrune. He often can no longer distinguish between events that happened or didn’t happen and confabulates stories to fill in the gaps of his memory. However, as he himself doesn’t know they are false, it might be difficult to detect them as lies through magical means.

Despite his fragile mental state, he has decades of experience as a soldier - and arguably hitman - for various houses during the Thrune Civil war. The required craftiness cultivated by these events can still surface to give rise to careful ruses and daring exploits. And despite all the craziness and his mangled face, he has… *something* that makes you want to listen to him, whether fascination for watching a trainwreck of a person up close, pity for what he’d been through or fear for his zealotry. Whether that was due to his own force of personality or a lingering gift of his patron diety remains to be seen.

Appearance:

With a face carrying the scars of decades of torture, including the five-pointed star symbol of asmodeus branded into his forehead above the eye, Malgar isn’t pleasant to look at. His beard and hair have whitened well before his age, and his second-hand clothes are worn at best. His overall health is questionable, with spotted skin, yellowish eyes and spider-like spots on his skin. All signs of advanced liver damage to those medically trained.

He does, however, carry both a reapier and bow (and hidden dagger) and moves with a certain sense of purpose and surety. There is a remnant of pride in him refusing to back down, and the aire is that he might just die and take you with him before it does.
