She-Who-Must-Not-Be Named, Lorraine Williams

Aha! Hehehehe. Oh, again out of curiousity, does the name Elhavious mean anything to anyone here?

I really do hope that some of the lesser known demons manage to grace the pages of the Demonicom such as Abraxas, and Astaroth.

Also I agree with an earlier post that perhaps there could be some equivalent for the Devils. It was stated that there were but a finite number of them, and that they had been given due discourse already. However, the rulers of the nine layers had changed somewhat when I returned to D&D after a break of several years, and The Book of Vile Darkness managed to present me with more questions than answers. Obviously I missed the whole attempt at taking at the top-dog himself, Asmodeus, and it seemed that there must be some chain of command for each particular circle of Hell and a chronicle of this would be very interesting. Especially for some us DM's with a more Machiavellian persuasion. Afterall, the Lawful alignment of the Devils most generate some very dastardly political manuevourings.

Whilst I'm on the topic. What ever happened to Tiamat? Was she technically a Devil, or a Dragon. She was always one of my favourites from 1st edition, and I've never seen her printed since.

Zuggtmoy would be great.

I pretty much agree with Yamo, I think some 'lower-profiles' would be much more interesting.

My wish-list would be (in order)..

1. BAPHOMET!
2. Erishkigal, Demon Queen of Seduction, Mistress of the Succubi (and, hey, sex sells, so vamp it up, baby).
3. Kostchtchie (entranced by him ever since the Dragon issue with him pasting a Roman-esque soldier on the cover. I was really surprised when he didn't make it in the FrostBurn book).
4. Zuggtomy (she's never really got the respect she's due (except in that one Nodwick strip where the cultists were making pizza), can't a fungi-rl get a break?)
5. Mandrillagon, Demon Lord of Primates (because monkeys make everything better)

I was the exact same Gavgoyle! As soon as I saw that cover, Kostchtchie become my favourite demon. It just conveyed the sense that he was one big, bad powerhouse, and woe to anyone that got in his way! I hope in the re-working of his stats though he is bigger than the measly 7 feet which the old Monster Manual 2 had him as.

Also, has Astaroth ever been put in any official publications?

There's also an online index of spells, magic items, and so on put out by Dragon Magazine.

The DragonDex

It will tell you the issue, page number, and article name where whatever it is you're looking for is found. The spell list also has what game system the spell was made for (since Dragon also does/did articles for Gamma World, Marvel, etc).

I checked out The DragonDex, Xellan, and it certainly is an excellent resource for trying to find a particular item, spell, monster, etc. The problem is however, that I am trying to find a pre-set data-base template to cover all these items, so that when I get my issue's of Dragon, or I decide to create an item myself, I can add it to my own constantly evolving data-base.

I am hopeless at using excel, as both computer's and I don't go well together! That's why I was hoping that some clever bod had already devised a blank generator, ready for me to take my stats and enter the data myself.

Sehanine, I would be really keen to check out yours, and I apologise that I haven't been in touch sooner, just that the e-mail above is usually clogged with spam. I can contacted much quicker at the following address:

Anyone who can help would have my gratitude.

Hey Lilith,
You must've meant SANDOR Clegane AKA "The Hound". Gregor, AKA "The Mountain" is a friggin' monster!

There are a lot of great villians in this series

It's possible - those books have a pretty large cast. "The Hound" was the one I was thinking of.

Both of them are right bastards, irregardless. :-P

Actually, when I met Mr Martin himself whilst he was in Glasgow last year signing copies of his new book 'A Dance of Dragons', I happened to mention that Ser Gregor Clegane was my favourite character in the series. At which he actually stopped signing, and gave me a somewhat bemused look, before asking;

'You mean Sandor, right?' To which I informed him that no, I meant Ser Gregor, much to his bemusement. Or perhaps it was amusement, as he actually laughed, and asked me why. When I told him my reasons, he chuckled again, and used the exact term Lilith used, exclaiming,

'Yeah, he is one nasty bastard!'

Oh and if Border Books, or any of Mr Martin's employee's are somehow reading this. I swear it I never meant to walk out of the shop with my new, signed copy without paying! It was only halfway home that I realised what I had done. Oh, and I have a theory that Ser Gregor, who is pretty much dead by the sound of things in Book 4, is set to make a dramatic return. My hunch was almost confirmed when the Measter given Clegane's poisoned corspe, tells Cersei that he has the ultimate champion ready to fight for her.

In comic books : Juggernuaght

In books: Ser Gregor Clegane from George R R Martin's superb 'A Song of Ice and Fire'

The scourge of all writers. All I can say is read and remember the words of Peruhain. He has hit the nail on the head. When you feel that little devil spouting doubts into your head, then back.

Leave it alone for awhile. Perhaps even longer than Peruhain suggests. Then when you came back to it, you will see your work with new eyes.

Most of all, do not falter at the first hurdle. The person that mention Tabitha King rescueing a disgruntled Stpehen King manuscript was right. Look where he is now.

Like most writers, we all know what you are going through, but plough on my friend, and hopefully one day, I'll be at the games table putting my players through a blistering adventure, that you yourself has devised.

Erm... sounds like Ad&D got there first. Bag of tricks anyone?

Hi there, I am a Scot's man desperately seeking fellow gamers. I'm experienced with all versions of the game. Surely there most be some people from our small country that play the game?

If so send me a post here, or alternatively you can get a hold of me direct by contacting:

mrh5474@tiscali.co.uk

Come on Scotland! Don't let me down!

Ah Sehanine, this was how I myself was planning to go. Problem being I am useless with computers, and when I use Excel it always appears in a spread-sheet format, when ideally I wound like to have say a report-style template, which every month I can bring up and add the latest additions from Dragon magazine to my database.

How do you manage yours, tips/templates would be much appreciated.

In fact, if possible could you please send a your design or template to my e-mail? This way, when I have a spare day, I can lift my pile of Dragon Magazines and build my own databases.

In return I would quite gladly give you free beta access to my two pbm's.

My e-mail is:

Some very thought provoking points raised so far, some of which had not entered my chain of thought.

If we are speaking in terms of infintite numbers (both demon and devil) and also supposing that they are of equal power, does this propose the concept that infinte cancels out infinte?

Therefore rendering an eternal stalement in the Blood War? Can anyone draw any light as to the official stance of which evil is currently holding the advantage?

If not then I think we would have to look at alignment to figure out which side is predisposed to having the upper hand, so to speak.

Now initially I would suggest that the Lawful Evil Devils would hold dominance. Just because of the simple fact that they are organised.

However, the more I theorise, the more I actually think that the Choatic Evil demons may have the edge.

Why? Well if you imagine say a great Devil, with his cast intelligence (far beyond the simple ken of mankind), and let's say this general has to surmise a battle plan. He would have to try and compute the nigh-infinite possibilities of his choatic counterpart. Thus granting a limit to his available options.

Or would the simple dynamics of a chaotic order be so unorganised that it would cancel out the deliberations of the lawful counterpart?

Oh no.... My head is starting to hurt thinking about this! Please help!

Mine is very much like Heathenson's, and I think he hit the nail on the head. The Boogeyman concept, is one which is very emmotive, we all remember having those fears as a child, so a homebrew verson certainly is the icing on the cake for giving your players the creeps.
My first incarnation of this was a servant sent by the pc's arch-nemesis to destroy them. He was vaguely human-like, but at 8 feet in height and bald-headed, with a dead-eyed stare, this was someone you never forgot in a hurry. They never learned his real name, but he soon became known as 'Lunicidal', because he was relentless, and destroyed anyone or anything that got in his path. This ultimately lead to a great finale, in an equally creepy forest, but I digress.

The new version is a being called Vulcrum. Basically, similiar concept. He's on your tail, you can't shake him, and you know that when he finally does catch up with, you better have some serious undergarments! This being is a nine foot walking suit of black metal armour, covered in vicious spikes. Actually one of his favourite moves is a grapple where he bear hugs an oppenent onto those very same spikes.

I recently saw the creature called a Zodran in Fiend Folio (the current edition) and thought that it was uncannily like Vulcrum, but minus the malevolent spikes. So if you have a copy of FF feel free to get have a look and get an inside into the kind of bogeymen my players have to face.

Oh, and for the record, for ultimate bad-guys, dragons well never replace the top Demons and Devils.

The Devils and Demons aspect has always been something that has been a main draw for many AD&D players, despite TSR caving in to fanatical religous groups for 2nd Edition.

I recently got The Book of Vile Darkness, and was pleased to find stats and descriptions for most of my all time bad-guys.

However, it seems I'm missing some info. Baalzebul turned into a slug, for his part in trying to usurp the top-man himself Asmodeus, and when and what exactaly occurred into this attempted usurping?

Big, fat Orcus died? But has come back meaner and leaner and eagre for revenge. When, and what happened?

And exactly how do all the top demonlords and Archdevils find time to conduct an infinite sized war, whilst at the same time conducting their own power struggles?

Has there ever been a publicised account of all these goings on? Or can anyone please help me fill in the blanks.

Oh and what happened to my all time favourite Demonlord; Kostchtchie? I loved that guy, and as one of Grazzt's chief underling you would have thought there would have been some mention of him in The Book of Vile Darkness.

I know this is just the pedant in me coming out, but in regards to the archmage names being removed, with an oldie like me that would be a point of contention. For me, a gamer since 1st edition, removing 'Bigby's' name, or that of any of the other Arch-magi from the beginning of the spell, would just be diluting the D&D experience even further. Crushing Hand, as opposed to Bigby's Crushing Hand, just doesn't have the same ring to it. And in reference to Grimclaw's comment that those characters don't exist in Faerun, well if you are looking at the Multiverse, they sort of do.

If a DM doesn't use the cosmology of the D&D game, then would it be too hard just to delete those names from the spell before placing them in character's spellbooks?

For someone who has played/DM'ed in every version of the game, and in almost every known campaign, the removal of these names would be removing us even further from the original.

Sorry, but that's just a personal opinion.

As a DM for over twenty years, I find that certain types of music, or sound effects can definatley increase the ambience, or even the tension of a game.

Actually should anyone be interested I have compiled two cd discs of weather effects, ambient sounds, and even battle music, especially useful for that big, bad dude the DM is obliged to throw in near the end of an adventure.

If you are interested in getting a copy then e-mail me at

mrh5474@tiscali.co.uk

They are free, although you may have to supply postage.

Hello Folks,

I've been DM'ing D&D off and on for a long time. Usually every month, Dragon magazine will introduce a lot of cool stuff to add to the game. Be it new spells, magic items, creatures, etc.

The problem I have is that I often read the magazine, and then put it away in a drawer and forget a lot of the useful spells and items contained therein.

Now, I don't want to carve up my precious magazines, and photocopying all these pages isn't the answer either. So I was wondering if there was some form of application, like a database, that would allow me to insert the new spells and items, etc every month? Thus I would have a complete list of all the new spells and magic, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, just thought I'd try and help a bit. Greyhawk was one of the very first campaigns to ever be created way back at the start of D&D. This was well before the time of Dragonlance, Dark-Sun, or even Forgotten Realms.

I believe it was the campaign used by the original creators of the Ad&D game, and there are some fine products which you should be able pick up somewhere on e-bay. The ones which best answer all your questions are 'The City of Greyhawk Boxed Set' an absoloute gem of a boxed set, and also 'From the Ashes' boxed set, which details the uneasy years after the war with Iuz has ended.

You could also do with getting hold of the very old 'World of Greyhawk' campaign set, but it's first edition roots, and vague information, actually create more questions than before. There is also an old hard-back book called 'Greyhawk Adventures' which has some useful info.

By the way the circle of Eight comprised of the most powerful wizards in the land, and I'm sure you'll recognise some of the names. Tenser, Otto, Bigby, Ottiluke, Rary and others, including the sects awesome leader; the mighty Mordankainen. Oh, there's also quite a shocking supplement called 'Rary the Traitor', which details plans by the usually quiet and unassuming archmage to dispose of the others. He actually kills Tenser and Otto before fleeing into the Abbor Alz. Great storyline, and campaign info. If you manage to get a hold of the City of Greyhawk boxed set, you'll be delighted as it is to this day, when of the most helpful source books printed for D&D.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I am a Dungeon Master, who along with an old friend, have recently returned to the hobby. I run several campaigns, ranging from 1st, 2nd to 3.5 rules.

We are looking for serious, mature role-players to participate at the beginning of a new Greyhawk campaign, which will be primarily based around Age of Worms adventure arc.

As I live in Falkirk, players will either have to live locally, or be able to provide their own transport.

If you are interested, reply here, or even better send an e-mail to falkirkbairn5474@yahoo.com and we can get the show on the road.
