Mads steps forward and casts a spell of ill-omen upon Gaspar. Ill-omen: You afflict the target with bad luck. On the next d20 roll the target makes, it must roll twice and take the less favorable result. For every five caster levels you have, the target must roll twice on an additional d20 roll (to a maximum of five rolls at 20th level). A target who can speak and has at least one free hand and who is aware of the spell and its effects (such as from a Spellcraft check to identify the spell as it is cast) can negate one reroll by spending a move action to utter a brief prayer or good luck charm to appease the spirits of ill fortune.

Mads stepped to the back of the group. Should he have gotte the soft cover bonus to AC? If so, the arrow would have missed. I'll roll concentration anyway. Concentration?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 If injured Mads heals himself. If not, he will cast mage armor from a scroll. Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Could probably use an aid or two here. Mads' charisma sucks. Still cackling by the way (heheh etc), so I'll use my reroll. Mads keeps binding wounds, shealding the corpse with his body and nudging a harpy wing and make it shiver. "I got a healing wand here! Heheh. Better decide quick!" Bluff: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12
Human Shaman 1 / Barbarian 1 | AC 15 (T 13 FF 12) | HP 28/28 | F +5 R +2 W +4 | Init +6 | Perc +6/+8
With the party wavering Mads decides to get creative. Kneeling next to the defeated harpy, he begins to apply first aid. "Hey Harpy b!@tch!" He shouts up at the aerie. "Heheh. Your mother's still breathin! Bring down the kid alive and we'll call it even! Heheheh."

"Time, heh, to climb, heh HEH!" Mads' crazy eyes look down at his hands as he continues to chuckle like a person unhinged. He then heads to the statue and begins to climb. Hexing himself with Fortune, and cackling to extend it upon both himself and Kalendir. Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Human Shaman 1 / Barbarian 1 | AC 15 (T 13 FF 12) | HP 28/28 | F +5 R +2 W +4 | Init +6 | Perc +6/+8
Mads gives Kalendir a crazed look. "For a second there I was sure we were doomed. Heheh." Using witches Fortune hex on Kalendir and extending it with a cackle (or in Mads case, a chuckle). Fortune (Su): The witch can grant a creature within 30 feet a bit of good luck for 1 round. The target can call upon this good luck once per round, allowing him to reroll any ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, taking the better result. He must decide to use this ability before the first roll is made. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. Once a creature has benefited from the fortune hex, it cannot benefit from it again for 24 hours.

Regarding AoOs: two people provoked unnecessary attacks. If you aren't sure about proximity, declare a 5' step. It usually gets you someplace safe for retrieving items or casting spells.

"What the...!" Mads comes out of his entrancement. "Damned songbirds. Had me thinkin happy thoughts." Mads springs a wand to hand, steps through the group, and heals Jake. CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 @Sam, they are in range now.

Just sticking with the previous. Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Mads is apparently looking at the wall and scratching his head. Yes, this is a horribly inappropriate encounter that really puts a damper on an otherwise fun scenario. By the way, is this an optional encounter? Because I'm going to be really angry with the writer if it is.

I should stick with the chain of events. Mads' familiar tries to shake him out of the effect and stings him, to no avail. Round 2 Mads' familiar will jump to Jake and start deafening him (the reason the scorpion chose Jake is the same reason the harpies focused on him - he's big and strong). Also, a note to keep in mind - the scorpion normally hides in his hood and has a stealth of +15, so it might not be so easy for the harpies to spot it.

I've got a problem here. Strider, you jumped past a whole lot of time assuming we couldn't do anything when the first harpy enraptured us all (which wasn't really the case because Mads familiar wasn't affected). The harpy even took time to fly a child up to the statue, laugh at us as we started to climb, got reinforcements and waited for us to climb back down. Mads' familiar basically lost the opportunity to attempt much of anything before two harpies were standing right next to it - and now we have a dead PC. And two DC checks that I doubt anyone can make.

Quote: Sound good? Nope, but when you're out of good plans, it's better to use a bad one then none at all. However, since Mads is about useless by himself, let's try this on Jake. :) The scorpion hops over to Jake and gives him an earful. Scorpion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Out of curiosity, what happened to the rest of our drovers? I thought a couple survived. Also, since harpies suck so much I looked up a few posts and James Jacobs had a few remarks about them. He said they couldn't attack while singing, hence the 1 round delay in song duration upon ending. So if Jake can take down the singer then we might have a chance.

Ok last arguments. Harpies are lame, shouldn't be in a tier this low, and have a cheesy ability that deserves to be thwarted by a cheesy tactic. However, I'll give you that a scorpion probably can't reach both ears at the same time, and the earplug example is a good point too. However, the scorpion can probably deafen someone permanently by sticking a pincer right in their ear (particularly someone who doesn't resist attacks). Personally, I'd prefer deafness to deadness. :D

"Owe." Mads mumbles as his scorpion stings him, but keeps shuffling forward. Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Heh. Just made it. Having no effect, the scorpion then climbs onto his head and sticks its pincers in his ears. I know this is dumb, but would deafening interrupt it? Because a dirty trick can deafen someone, and a familiar is smart enough to try that, isn't it? :)

Question: Mads has a scorpion familiar, which is immune to Immune mind-affecting effects. Can it use it's empathetic link to tell Mads he's in imminent danger of death? If so.. Mads imminent death save?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

"Woah! Look out butter Finger! Almost got me on the backswing there. Alright, let's end this." Mads springs a second wand to hand, steps to the side and aims it at the face of the goblin between Bevek and Finger. "What's the goblin word for toast?" Wand of Burning Hands - DC 11: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 1) = 5

Mads taps Sam with his wand again. As the sorcerer starts to come around, he sees Mads face looming over him. "Looks like you might live! Can I still have your stuff!?" Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Heh.. cruddy roll.

"Damn goblins, don't you guys know there's a sandstorm in the area? Ahh! Hey that's sharp!" Mads steps back from the goblin that stuck him, pulls out a scroll and casts the spell upon it, reaching out to touch one of the big guys standing around with a weapon. I'm assuming Finger will move by the time Mads is up, so I'll 5' step back into his spot. Then cast mage armor on someone without armor - first option Finger, then Bevek, Jake, or Kalendir.

"We almost lose Fingers? Heh, another leper joke. Drag him over here with the rest of the overcooked brisket." Mads passes out more healing with his wand. Cure Light Wounds on Fingers: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
As a northerner, this environment is not one Mads is used to. Sweat beads his face, dripping from his sunburned nose, which still bears a small cut at the bridge from the leper's lucky haymaker. "A dream assignment, he said. A scenic trip in the desert. Easiest job ever. Damned holiday in Qadira!" Despite leper cultists, heat-stroke, and a freak desert storm, Mads laughs like the whole thing is a good joke he's just getting. Getting out a wand, he reluctantly passes it over himself, then offers it to anyone else in need. Wand of Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Dragging Targos into the tent, he slump down in an open spot, throws an arm over his face, and says in a muffled voice. "Someone wake me when it's over."

Mads examines his club, cleaning it on a leper's rags, then looking from the leper to his club. "Ugh." He goes and holds it in the fire for a couple seconds. "That'll do..." He then notices a bigger problem created by Jake's bloody castoff. "Ahh, Cayden on a couch!" Giving up on the gore, Mads looks around. "City guard said they had a cart. Might have used it for firewood. If so, just throw him over a horse." Reminds me of The Princess Bride.

Fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 "Haha, Ow!" Mads rubs the small bruise inflicted by the leper, then takes his club in two hands and swings back. Not sure without a map, but we seem to outnumber the cultists, so I would adjust to flank with another party member if possible.

As the priest and his lepers prepare to fight, Mads stares at Ben-Garri and begins chuckling. "Hah. Who knew lepers could be funny!" Misfortune Hex on Ben-Garri (DC 13 - Cackle to extend 1 round if he fails the save). Misfortune (Su): The witch can cause a creature within 30 feet to suffer grave misfortune for 1 round. Anytime the creature makes an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, it must roll twice and take the worse result. A Will save negates this hex.

Mads looks upon the scene, talking to himself through a tight grin. "Cultists. Bonfire. Right, nothin suspicious here." Throwing some magical guidance around, he then raises his voice and calls out to the priest. "Ben-Garri! We've come for the body. Nice of you to wrap it up to go. Might want to tend that fire. Gettin a little big, wouldn't want anyone gettin burned!" Intimidate + Guidance: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 1 = 15 If time permits, guidance on the party.

Mads frowns at the idea of buying real horses. "Not worth the cost. Don't really know how to ride. Should get disposable or just start walkin." He looks back out the gates. "What's the rush anyway? Chasin a corpse. Can't get more dead, can he?" |
