About "Lug" Laetus

Silvanus "Lug" Laetus

Background and Personality:
Planet of birth: Backwater (Insidias Minorum)
Divination: "The only true fear is of dying with your duty not done."

What is your personality like?
Lug is definitely a melancholic person; brow always creased in thought, always reflecting on past events, and sometimes caught in the depths of black, black moods. He is very focused on his duty, and thinks about it almost constantly.

How did you meet your Inquisitor?
Lug was always singled out for his ability, and as soon as he came of age the Imperial recruiters snapped him up. Tall, strong, skilful, quiet, and generally obedient, Lug was the perfect Imperial conscript. His betrothal was broken the night before he was shipped off to the PDF training facility. If there is anything he holds against the Imperium, it is that he missed his chance to marry his sweetheart, Marjhi.

From the very early days of his training, Lug stood out from the crowd. Given his natural talents, physique, and quiet charisma (at least compared to other guardsmen), Lug was earmarked early for a leadership role. However, after hearing higher-ranking guardsmen discussing this gifted recruit, a newly-arrived Inquisitor swiftly seconded Lug to his cause. The Inquisitor has not, as yet, been disappointed with Lug's performance, but he has begun to notice the disturbing signs of thought behind Lug's usually placid blue eyes. The Inquisitor has considered pushing Lug to his limits, to observe how his behaviour develops under intense stress. Perhaps the boy will shine, perhaps he will reveal his innate weakness. However, the opportunity has not yet arisen, and the Inquisitor looks forward to seeing whether Lug excels or cracks in the coming flames.

What does the Inquisition mean to you?
Lug understands enough of the dangers facing mankind that he accepts the necessity of the Inquisition, yet he hates that it must exist at all. He has no options in life anymore beyond the Inquisition, so he will not fight his destiny, yet he cannot make himself love it. What Lug has realised, and almost entirely accepted, is that it doesn't matter what he thinks of the Inquisition. Nothing inside his head matters at all, not what he thinks, or feels, loves, or hates. He is now part of the apparatus that fights to protect the Imperium, and he either does that job to the best of his ability, or he lays down and dies. Lug chooses to do his duty.

Despite his melancholy, Lug has no wish whatsoever to die.

What will you sacrifice?
Lug knows death in service to the Emperor is certain, but he wishes to do his job as best he can for as long as he can; it's better than the alternative, which is dying. Lug believes in humanity, and he is willing to fight as hard as he can, but he will not easily compromise his principles simply on orders from above. To date, he has managed to avoid damaging his soul too much in service to the Inquisition, but he fears what he may be asked to do at some point in the near future. He will sacrifice his body, mind, his life, before he will sacrifice his soul.

What do you desire?
If Lug could have any wish granted, it would be to return to his father's hold and marry his childhood sweetheart (once betrothed). While he knows this is a fantasy, and will never happen, his memories of Marjhi sustain him when the nights are black and cold. He thinks of her, and dedicates his life to all the Marjhi's in the universe, to protecting every human being as best he can.

What do you hate?
Lug hates that the Dark Powers, the xenos, the horrors of the warp exist at all, as their existence requires men like Lug to be taken from their communities and pressed into service for the protection of mankind. Lug hates that there is evil, and while he knows it is out there and must be combatted by men such as he, it has destroyed his life. He is quietly ferocious in battle, clinically murderous, and that hatred sustains him at the times when even his love for his lost love deserts his heart.
