BACKSTORY

Lian Zhao uses the English name Louise. She used to use the name Lisa, but after seeing a screening of the film Pandora's Box there was only one name that would do, so she changed to Louise after arriving in the United States.

Louise is from Shanghai, where her father is a financier principally invested in rubber. Her kindred spirit in the family though is her uncle Feng Zhao, a professor of sociology. He was instrumental in convincing her parents to let her attend university in the U.S. He argued that not only would it benefit Lian, but potentially the whole family. Entrepreneurs like Lian's father are increasingly squeezed between Nationalist income extraction to support the army, and economic disruptions due to communist party sponsored labor strikes. Feng Zhao pointed out it could be a great benefit for the family to have one foot in another country in case the situation continues to deteriorate. Since that time, a Japanese invasion of Manchuria is making it look more and more like a wise investment.

During the ten years she has live din New York, Lian has become very comfortable there. To her it feels as much like home as Shanghai ever did.

Louise is 28 and her time line in New York looks like this:

Personal Description:

Louise has black hair and dark brown eyes. Although her height of 5'0" is quite average back in her home country, she's short compared to most American women. She has a slight build and weighs 102 lbs. Despite her small frame, Louise is fairly hearty and fit due to her active lifestyle. At work she is usually on her feet and moving. In her free time she dances, plays tennis, skis, and has done some mountain climbing.

She dresses well, in bespoke rather than off the rack clothing. Her tastes aren't flashy, she's usually dressing for work or for outdoor activities. She does keep four or five very stylish dresses in her wardrobe for special evenings out.

Ideology/Beliefs:

Louise's political beliefs are left wing but not clearly defined. Depending on the particular subject her opinions could be defined as socialist or communist. Broadly speaking she believes in internationalism and is anti-imperialist. She favors economic systems based in equality of all people and the dismantling of class systems. She is very much a feminist and anti-traditionalist. Louise is passively atheist in the sense she doesn't give the subject of religion much thought at all.

Louise stays informed on current events. Although her own politics are farther to the left, she has great hope the new Roosevelt presidency will arrest the current depression and improve peoples' lives in America. She despises Chiang Kai-shek, China's president. She sees him as little more than a warlord who ruined the Kuomintang when he became party leader.
