About Lemuel Bender

Consider making him an arcanist.

Appearance

Spoiler:
Lemuel is a small, thin man with a neat brown goatee and unkempt hair. He is careless in his dress and often goes about in a heavy lab-coat or leather apron and gloves. He frequently squints when reading or when looking at something more than a few feet away. His voice is raspy and often interrupted by a dry cough, both are the result of years spent toiling over vessels of fuming chemicals.

Serpent Skull Bio

Spoiler:
Lemuel Bender is a native of Magnimar who made his living as an apprentice to a prosperous wizard in the famed Bazaar of Sails. Despite giving years of faithful service to his master, Lemuel was largely treated more as a lackey than as a worthy apprentice. Ultimately, this embittered him and he left his master's service with little in the way of acknowledgment by the latter.

Lemuel's wizardly abilities allowed him to survive, but only just barely. For the most part, he used his powers to enhance the strength of prize-fighters who competed in the local arenas. This brought him to the attention of a ship's captain named Festrov. Festrov planned to host a tournament of fighting men to entertain several gamblers that would journey to Corentyne aboard his ship, the Rolling Sally. The captain suggested that Lemuel use his powers to augment the abilities of fighters that he himself had bet upon through proxies. The scheme worked well for three voyages and Lemuel and the captain made handsome rewards for their efforts. Lemuel decided that he could adjust quite well to life aboard a festival-ship.

Unfortunately, on a voyage to Sargava, pirate ships set upon the flotilla that the Rolling Sally was part of. Festrov managed to lose his pursuers after taking what seemed like little damage. However, the captain was forced to sail into waters near the Smuggler's Shiv. The ship dropped anchor and Lemuel joined a scouting party to the island to search for supplies.

A short time after reaching the periphery of the jungle, the search party was attacked by savages and lost over half its number. In the carnage, Lemuel was cut off from his companions. The crew assumed that Lemuel was killed in the ambush, retreated to their boats and made their way back to the Rolling Sally. He watched the rowboats return to the ship and then watched the Sally sail east, stranding him on the island.

By sheer luck, Lemuel escaped the savages and has hidden among the jungle for three weeks as best as he can tell. Lemuel has survived on fruit from the trees and by hiding wherever possible. Each day he expends a bit more of his luck and a bit more of his will to carry on.

Notes;

Spoiler:

Bender would not expect the weight-gain from the bloatmage initiate feat. He would believe that something has gone wrong with the instructions, components or materials used. His demeanor will change for the worse and he will start to angrily overreact to slight provocations. When he reaches his first level of bloatmage he will be appalled by the changes to his physique and will descend further into fits of explosive anger temper when he is provoked or frustrated.

Level 3 feat: Brew Potion
Consider having the bloatmage being inadvertent; he was duped by a mentor or he misunderstood an arcane treatise.

Bender would brew potions for money as soon as he is able. For dramatic effect many of his spells would involve consuming something as part of their somatic components and some might involve drinking components as if they are potions. He would carry spices, powders, roots, preserved eyes of lizards etc.

If he gets Blood Biographyor similar spells he will use a syringe for extracting blood and inject it into himself rather than drink it.

Spells that affect mental conditions would be attributed to his understanding of psychology.

Bio 1

Spoiler:
Lemuel Bender was a sickly child born to a wool merchant and his wife just outside Magnimar. While his brothers and sisters enjoyed robust health Lemuel was often bed-ridden with only his mother for company. Fortunately for Lemuel, his mother was an educated woman who instilled a love of reading in her son. The boy devoured any book that was brought to him, especially if it concerned remedies for improving one's health.

It was also fortunate for Lemuel that his father was a successful merchant because it meant that the family had enough gold to hire the finest doctors available for him. Over the years, Lemuel was treated by apothecaries, alchemists, spiritualists, herbalists and so on. He gleaned a bit of information from some and grew sufficiently acquainted with one alchemist that, when he grew old enough, the alchemist took Lemuel on as an apprentice.

As the years passed, Lemuel's health improved enough that it was no longer much of a concern. Over the course of his apprenticeship, Lemuel discovered his talent for wizardry and his fascination with experimentation. His focus has settled on transforming living creatures to improve them, as he sees things. His years of sickness convinced Lemuel that all organisms would benefit from ordered sculpting.
Ultimately, he seeks to transform himself into a superior state of being. But to do that he needs more subjects, more gold and access to rare materials found only in far-flung locales.
