Lantesh grew up in a small village near the edge of the shadowlands. Each person worked hard in order for them to survive. When Lantesh began to manifest his nature, he was taught the ways of the hunt. No detail was considered beneath notice, a small rock overturned, part of a leaf eaten away, even the droppings told a tale. Lantesh realized that he loved the hunt, albeit in a different way. He was always good at finding people.
Lantesh' tribe had been chosen to provide bodyguards for a particular noble house. It was a great honor to serve as such. This had been so for many generations.
It wasn't until he was out on a hunt that he returned to find his village in shambles. He found the tracks of the raiders and followed them. As he saw what remained of the villagers his heart stopped. What he saw made his blood run cold. They had his sister Yanwe. She looked like she had been hurt in the fight back at the village. They would all suffer for that. There was another girl who he had seen before but never met (Anwyn).
He waited until nightfall to make his move. The leader was gone but the remaining bandits were gathered and seemed to be having a good time. They had Anwyn serving them food and drink. She was fiesty that one. One of the bandits was trying to get her to come closer but she was having none of it.
Lantesh used this opportunity to attack. Roaring with rage he went straight for the nearest bandit. They were caught off guard and he killed every single one. Only the villagers remained and the girl. Making his way to Yanwe, he found that she had succumbed to her wounds during the fight. Anwyn was the only one left.
His eyes turned to Anwyn. "I have nobody left to protect. I was her guardian, and I failed. I will take you back to your home."
He escorted her home. As penance and for saving her, although he does not know this for his failure to protect his sister, he was charged with watching over Anwyn. Without question he accepted for it was Siol. He became the protector of Anwyn. He would not fail again.
The image of Yanwe will haunt him forever.
