Greetings All,

I was thinking of ideas for events to happen in a future story arc, and came across the mimic in the bestiary.

I was thinking since they have high enough intelligence that one could be raised and trained as an assassin of sorts. My PCs would take a ship to an island to rescue an ambassador--the mimic's target--and the mimic would not act until the ambassador was on board.

How would the mimics CR need to be adjusted when it turns into a ship? Does it being larger necessarily make it stronger, or give it more places to be chopped at? My experience with mimics in RPG's are usually chests, and the mouth would be the opening of the chest...where would the mouth and dangerous bits be on a mimic that took on a ship's form? Since I'm creating it I guess it's up to me, but any input would be helpful.

Thanks!

Hello all.

Looking at the modifier table shows a potential of scores up to 45...I assume scores that high are rarely seen. I know it depends on your style, but do PCs generally depend on Tomes and Manuals to boost their abilities? Or if you get an 8 to a score to you just stick with it? I'm considering Craft Wondrous Items just to be able to make Tomes out the wazoo to become a demigod. Though it will take my character a few decades to pull off.

How do you all handle poor ability scores?

Hello all, I've been going over the crafting rules in the rulebook and forums, and wanted to make sure I understand the rules-as-written:

To craft a Well of Many Worlds requires Craft Wondrous Item, gate; Cost: 41,000 gp...so let me know if I have the following correct:

1) This item would take 41 days to craft.

2) The PC would need to cast gate every day of crafting (41 times) OR use 41 scrolls or 41 wand charges.

One thing I'm not sure on is if the PC cannot cast gate can they take the +5 penalty for not meeting the requirement? I assume creating a scroll without knowing the spell would be out of the question since it is a spell completion item, correct?

Thanks for your time!

Hello all, I've just started playing tabletop RPG's, and have a few questions on some basic GM things I should know, if you don't mind taking a look:

1) When should I be performing checks? The module I picked up has some starving wolves, and the PCs can make a Knowledge (Nature) check to realize this and then can choose to feed them, etc. Is this something I would roll secretly, or would I ask the PCs to roll? Or would they have to state they would be using that skill to make the check?

2)Once a PC gains this knowledge can they immediately tell the other PCs? In the above example, would each PC have to make the check on the wolves? If one PC failed would the others get a chance to check?

3) On a similar thought, when facing enemies, can the PCs make any type of check to get more info on the monsters they are facing, and how much detail should I give about the monsters as GM? (Describing weapons carried, abilities they have, health etc)

4) On a separate note, where is all the gold coming from to craft items/purchase items? I'm seeing some costs of 100,000 gold, and with the PCs starting at 140g it doesn't seem they'll be getting that anytime soon. Is it mainly loot, or should all the PCs have Professions?

5) Finally, one of the PCs is a cleric, and bless water takes 5 pounds of silver...where are they supposed to come by this? Do they buy it at a store in town, or is it a loot item? I guess that question applies to other material components as well.

Thanks very much for your time.
