Boring…Boring, boring, boring. My life was completely and utterly boring. I guess pa did a pretty good job raising me in that little hut in the woods after my ma passed away, but I knew I was destined for better things. As a matter of fact the only two things that kept me from dying of boredom was shooting my bow…Dad says I got my skill in that from Mom’s side of the family, and reading the small library of books my Ma left behind. By the time I was 10 I was already bring home as much meat for the pot as Dad, and killing a running rabbit with my trusty shortbow, came to be unchallenging.
There were stories of faraway lands, with strange people, and monsters, and books with beautiful pictures, and illustrations of all manner of strange plants and animals. But the one that he read until it was dog eared and worn was one about the history of a great city. It was known as Korvosa, and to my young eyes had to be the most magical and wondrous place on earth. The only book dad wouldn’t let me read was some strange book with a writing I didn’t even understand. He saw me looking at it when I was a lad, and firmly took it from me, and told me I was never to touch it again.
I don’t think dad ever really recovered from Ma’s death, and he was not a well man. Finally one winter he came down with a bad cough, and I woke up one morning to his dead cold body. After taking the time to bury him in a shallow frozen grave, I spent a week morning, feeling sorry for myself, and wondering what I was going to do…how was I going to live. Then it came to me. As I was cleaning up around the house I came across the book about Korvosa. That’s it…I would go to Korvosa. I went to the shelf above Dad’s bed in the back room, and reaching into the fake cubby hole above his bed, and took down the small pouch of coins he had put aside. There was also a long sharp dagger wrapped up in an oilcloth…I took that too. Finally I felt something else in the hole and pulled out Mom’s forbidden book. Packing it all away I took off for Korvosa.
Korvosa wasn’t exactly like it was portrayed in the book. It was much dirtier, and smellier, and the people weren’t exactly friendly. But, I had one thing going for me. I could shoot a bow. I made a few coins along the way shooting rats in the parts of town that could afford me, but this wasn’t how I imagined my life would be…Then I got my lucky break. I was hired by a man named Gaedren Lamm. After clearing out a few rats from some building he had just bought down by the docks, he promised me a roof over my head and a few silvers to keep watch on things for him. It involved shooting at a different kind of rat. Those that walked on two feet, and shouted when they were shot. I didn’t kill anybody…I don’t think, but certainly winged a few. Then I started to feel bad about some of the things Lamm was doing. Finally a bunch of do-gooders came around on my day off, and shut down Lamm’s operation permanently.
Next I found a cool position at a place called Eel’s End. Lots a fun there I’ll tell you. Every night was like a party, and I mostly just had to fire a few shafts into a scrum to break things up. I got pretty good at firing into a crowd, and hitting who I meant to. I worked for a guy named Devargo Barvasi…a pretty cool guy except for all the spiders…that was kind of creepy. As a matter of fact he was called The King of Spiders by some. Once again, my cushy job was messed up by that same group of do-gooders. They were really starting to get on my nerves.
Then everybody started getting sick and dying, and the Queen turned into some kind of evil b~*&!, so I made for Old Korvosa, and took a job with some more royalty. A guy named Pilts Swastel, who called himself the Emperor of Old Korvosa. Seems like all you need to do here in Korvosa is name yourself some noble name and you become one. Anyway things were kind of tough at that time, but working as a guard sniper for The Emperor was about the best job around…then guess what…Yep the same dang group of idiot adventures show up and ruin that gig.
Things got really crazy then. The queen had all these hot warrior women working for her, and things kind of settled down in the city, but everybody was scared and pretty much kept to themselves. It was hard to make a penny then, and I even considered moving back to the cabin in the woods…if I could even get out of the city.
Finally a couple of months ago those pesky adventurers and the Queen’s forces had some kind of big battle, and the Queen died and everything was disorderly, and I was really having a hard time making ends meet, when I had a sudden flash of inspiration.
Maybe I’d just become one of those adventurer dudes. They seemed to always come out on top of things. I’d just have to figure out how to go about it. Shouldn’t be to hard. I was good with a bow…and had picked up a few other ummm….skills in the past couple of years.
