Backstory:
Many long years ago when Thorin Oakenshield went out to reclaim his ancestral home from Smaug there were no Dwarven rogues available to help him. It's not that Dwarven rogues didn't exist it's just that it wasn't a popular career choice for Dwarves and there weren't that many of them. Thorin didn't feel like waiting around for a Dwarven rogue to become available and so set out on his expedition with no rogue support. Fortunately Gandalf was able to talk Thorin into taking Bilbo along to fill that niche and the rest is history. Once things got settled at the Lonely Mountain after Smaug had been killed and the battle of the five armies was over, it was realized that something had to be done to ensure there were more Dwarven rogues available. They couldn't always be sending to the Shire for halfling rogues to do their scouting for them. Besides, halflings needed light to see, and for a lot of the things that Dwarves had to do when it came to fighting goblins and orcs underground that was a serious handicap. Thus it was that the new King Under the Mountain hired some experienced Dwarven rogues to set up an official Royal school for rogues in his kingdom. Special incentives were offered to attract students to the school. Within limits this approach worked reasonably well. The career choice of being a rogue never became one that was popular with Dwarves. But they were able to get enough students qualified through the school that they no longer had a crippling shortage of trained talent in that vital area. When the orders came in to the Lonely Mountain for the various toys to be made and sent to the Shire for Bilbo's party the decision was made to send one of the recent graduates from the school with them. That way the young rogue could gain valuable experience scouting for the small caravan that was sent to the Shire. Also the young rogue could engage in a sort of cultural exchange and note comparison with the Halfling rogues in the Shire. Khazak Ironaxe was chosen for this mission as he had done very well in his training. The fact that he was, at least as far as Dwarves are concerned, exceptionally charismatic also helped. Furthermore, he had already run a couple of small errands for Gandalf and acquitted himself well while doing so. Khazak scouted for the caravan as it headed to the Shire. The trip was uneventful and on their arrival in the Shire Khazak set out to make contact with the rogues of the Shire. Initially things were somewhat of a bust. The great Bilbo Baggins was polite, but was really too busy with preparations for the party to do more than have a brief conversation with the young dwarf. Khazak tried to make contact with the local thieves' guild, only to find that in the Shire such things were very low key and nowhere near as well organized as they would be in a dwarven land. Nevertheless, through a combination of sheer dogged perseverance, making what use of diplomacy that he could, seeing who would engage him in meaningful conversations in thieves' cant, to say nothing of consuming lots of good ale and smoking lots of fine pipe tobacco in various pubs; Khazak was able to make contact with Halfling rogues in the Shire. Things still didn't work out quite as well as Khazak had hoped, but that part of the mission was nowhere near a complete bust either. Khazak was able to give them some tips on the finer points of appraising various objects, dungeoneering techniques, and the proper use of the battleaxe. They gave him advice on various escape artist techniques, tried to get him proficient with the Halfling sling staff (Khazak could see some arguments in its favor, but darned if he could get the silly thing to work properly) and helped him brush up on a little diplomacy. However, to the extent that a certain amount of camaraderie was established, as well as the consumption of more good ale and the smoking of more excellent pipe tobacco, then perhaps the mission was a success after all. Later on during the party, when Gandalf contacted Khazak and asked him to undertake the mission to North Farthing, Khazak was ready. Khazak checked in quietly with the caravan master to let him know what was going on. Things had been peaceful enough on the trip into the Shire that the caravan master felt he could spare the services of the young rogue and maybe a fighter or two on the trip back. Besides, the precedent had been established long before that within very broad limits, what Gandalf wanted, Gandalf got. Khazak collected his gear and headed off to the rendezvous point where the party members were to meet making sure that nobody saw him.
Physical Description:
Khazak is 49 years old. He is big for a dwarf, standing 4 feet 4 inches tall and weighing in at 199 lbs. He has dark brown hair and eyes. He wears his chest length beard woven into one large braid into which several small ornaments have been attached. One of those is a miniature representation of a heavy crossbow. It indicates that Khazak has successfully completed training at the King Under the Mountain's Royal School for Rogues. Khazak's leather armor is dark brown in color. Most of the items that form his Explorer's Outfit are also in various shades of brown. The main exception is the cloak, which is grey in color. Khazak wears his battleaxe on his weapon belt on his right hand side. The Morningstar is on his weapon belt on his left hand side set up to permit a cross draw. He carries the sickle thrust through the center front of his weapon belt set up for a right hand draw. He carries one dagger concealed in each boot. When Khazak is not carrying the heavy crossbow ready it is slung over his right shoulder. The throwing darts are in a special quiver slung off his left shoulder. He carries the bolts for his heavy crossbow in a special carrier on the right side of his weapon belt behind his axe. Notes on tactics:
When Khazak is in an area where he can expect trouble he will carry his heavy crossbow loaded and ready. Under usual circumstances Khazak will take one shot with his heavy crossbow and then sling that weapon back over his right shoulder. He will then draw whichever of his other weapons that he feels he needs. The battleaxe for general melee combat, the Morningstar if he's dealing with things that need to be bludgeoned or pierced, or one of his throwing darts if it looks like he can get another ranged attack in before the melee starts. Khazak normally employs his battleaxe and Morningstar using a two handed grip. Once the melee is over and things have quieted down Khazak will retrieve any darts that he threw and load up the heavy crossbow again. Equipment:
