I have loved the game from the first time I saw it at Gencon 3 (4?) years ago. I have found it to be very smooth and enjoyable. All the people I have played it with, from my gaming group to just running it at conventions, they have all liked what they have experienced. My favorite thing is the ability to get detailed without having to worry about being bogged down. Combat is descriptive and flowing I have shown 6 new players how to do combat in less than 5 minutes and usually have to ask them to slow down to keep up with them and the fight! As for the game itself I have found that players usually go all out with the way the characters are designed, from the skills allowing for a chance to affect an outcome to the different ways problems are modified, and the clean way attributes can be used as well. I have a group of players who are one of each of the races, but no gnomes (for now). Only two have the ability to speak mannish, all the rest have to work with other players to speak with each other! Then last but not least is the way that traveling from point a to point b in the game can be an adventure itself! When the party is delayed due to a freak snowstorm and have to hole up, skills like divining and hunting come in handy when the food and water runs out. Over all this game satisfies the want for detailed high fantasy gaming without getting all bogged down by lots of extraneous and most times very silly stuff.

http://www.MetalMagicandLore.com I have found that this has been my saviour for a game that is not D&D but allows me to have a game in this type of setting, and require intelligence!

An author I could recommend would be Barbara Hambly, specifically the Dragonslayer novel. It sounds like the level of gritty that would work for you. It helps to demonstrate the fragility of humans, but with planning and the help of a mage you *might* survive the fight. Intelligence for the win!

I am running events at Gen Con for the game Metal, Magic and Lore(http://www.MetalMagicandLore.com). I am appealing to the gamers out their for ideas on what kind of races within the Metal, Magic and Lore system they would like to see in a fight to the death. That would be for the PIT FIGHT! games I am running on Thursday and Friday. I am also looking for ideas for the campaign for "Let's Get Us Some Monsters!" I have always believed the maxim of two heads are better than one, and with the internet I have a lot more heads. I feel this will add a more creative touch for the ideas I already have. This is to say I would like to have the interest of the masses to really liven things up. I am in need of prize ideas for the PIT FIGHT! and "Let's Get Us Some Monsters!". My personal thought is a belt of some kind for the PIT FIGHT! or I could go with idea of a weapon of some kind, of the pointy/stabby/bone breaky variety. I like to follow the Metal, Magic and Lore catch phrase of "Reality Sets In..." so as budget allows the prize will be good. To those interested and attending the PIT FIGHT! will allow for the winner from Thursday to fight Friday for the big prize! As for the "Let's Get Us Some Monsters!" I do not have any real good Ideas for a prize. So I implore all gamers to please lend me your support! Thank you for the ideas as they come in and I will be diligent to this thread.

This is the event numbers for those who are going and want to play:

Thursday: RPG0904660

Friday: RPG0904661

Saturday: RPG0904662

I met these guys at Gencon two years ago. I had to say that my initial touch with game was kind of wary. My job at Gencon was to try out games for a store in St. Louis. As I got to looking around there were only two roleplaying games I thought were even worth looking at and to say the least Metal Magic and Lore is the one who won out. The more I demo this game for people, and get my own gaming group into playing this, the more happy I am about owning it and trying to get other people into playing this. I grew up with D&D in the myriad of forms it has taken over the years and got burned out on the idea of fantasy roleplaying. To say the least Serenity was the big game for a while. Then my group got curious about MML. Wanted to give it a shot, and they are done with character creation and are enjoying the game and they have not even gotten to the game yet. (Schedule is hectic as all...heck!) They like the system and the lethality of your decisions. One of my players made the analogy of: D&D is an action figure you get to paint and chose the weapon it carries, MML, you get to carve the miniature from the ground up, paint it and put all the background detail around it. To say the least I was very happy to hear this from my players! I am hoping to see more of what these guys can do!
