All,

I've grown shorter and shorter on time in recent months, and I kept hoping that my schedule would clear up, but it hasn't. It's gotten to the point where I just have to force myself to sit down and write, and that's completely the opposite of what PbP gaming should be. Wrestling with this dilemma, I've come to the conclusion that I need to cut back, and so I must withdraw from this game.

I appreciate the opportunity to have played with you all. It's been a lot of fun! I hope to have more opportunities to play with you again the future.

"A little bit alcoholic!?" Kera blinks and coughs on the strong punch. "Don't pour't on th' fire! We'll all be toast!" She takes another sip before subtly pouring it out over a dirt patch, but she hangs on to the mug.

"Ummm, Henric, Renae?" she whispers. "D'you spot that group there by Bimmer's cart? They're part of the ruckus in the Circle last week. I heard 'em speakin' of losin' their friends."

"'N there!" she nods her head toward the second group making their way toward the cart, trying not to be too obvious. "There's five with a grudge if I ever saw it! I think there's 'bout t'be trouble!"

Kera smiles broadly at Henric's obvious discomfort. "I'm two steps this side o' where I was, so take that for what it is!"

"Hi Renae!" Kera will never get used to being bowed out. She reaches out and gives Renae a pat on the shoulder. "The market's fantastic! Look!" Kera points to a patisserie's booth. There, a tantalizing spread of artisan, gourmet pastries lines the vendor's table. Cannoli, strudel, eclairs, fruit tarts, fig dumplings, apple pies, and other confections accompany loaves of milled wheat sprinkled with sesame seeds, white breads pulled and twisted into baguettes, and round loaves of pumpkin bread crowned with pecan. The glaze of most of them reflects the sunlight, the coarse sugars reflecting the light like delicate, prized jewels.

"I want t'eat everythin'," she says soberly.

They say that, in dreams, the world is at its most real. When we lay our heads upon our pillows or satchels, when we stare up at our ceilings or canopies, when we bask beneath the light of the moon and stars, we see things a bit differently. Unburdened by plans and problems, we experience things as they are. The world can simply breathe, and in its exhale we are captive to its whims.

It's for this reason that Kera begins each day with a prayer of sorts (more of a conversation, really), in which she reflects upon her dreams and thanks the Great Dreamer for sending them. She doesn't question them too much, insteading trusting in the guidance of destiny. She apologizes to the universe for the tracks she is to impart upon it that day, and asks for its patience as she finds her way. Like a shooting star traversing the vastness of space, hers can be a lonely road. But like the stars, there are numerous travelers with whom she might share the burden of this journey, and she asks for safe passage for them in kind.

It is in this way that Kera begins this most fateful of days. Stepping from the back of her brightly-painted vardo, she hums a little tune as she brushes out her long hair, her best and favorite feature. Its texture she'd gotten from her mother, whose hair was likewise wild and, it was well known, had a mind of its own. Hers was not independently intelligent but was equally difficult to control (there aren't enough prestidigitations in the world to tame this rebellious mop). Its auburn color, however, came from her father. At least, her mother said so, and she'd have to take her word on that, because she'd never met the man. Her mother said only that theirs had been a passionate but brief encounter on the road, when Arya was a much younger woman. Two shooting stars, they'd been, flying in different directions.

Among her clansmen, she leads the morning prayer, then helps herself to a breakfast of hot sausages and porridge.

The rising sun finds her roaming the Circle amid the hustle and bustle of market day. "Mornin' Henric, Renae! Th'air's crisp as an autumn apple, i'nit?" Tag Henric and Renae.

Renae, feel free to make use of Kera's market roll and get that potion or scroll. Kera is currently low on funds!

Second, with Kera, since you grew up in Sandpoint and your mother was part of the 'Heroes' you would have likely come to at least know of Stryn since he was friends with one of the other 'Heroes'. He made a little bit of a life for himself in Sandpoint until after the giant attack when his friend and the 'Heroes' left Sandpoint and he eventually got press ganged. Could be as little as a passing familiarity or more than that depending on what you think.

Connecting on the caravan to at least give us all a passing familiarity with each other could work if we wanted to avoid the awkward stage of meeting new people, but I'm ok with only some of us having met on the caravan and others not so we still have to do some team jelling at some point. If we go the route of only some people on the caravan then I think it would make sense for possibly, at least, Georgi and I not being on there, since Kera and I may have a link that could tie those two separate groups together.

I would LOVE to have a goblin buddy! You'd have met Kera's mom, Arya. How old is Stryn? Kera was only ten years old at the time, but a friendship between a goblin rogue and a little human girl would be amazing. Also, I actually prefer the scenario you've described in which Kera and Stryn haven't seen each other for a while. As you say, this would allow us to link the two groups together.

Kiley, as a lover of song and dance, you'd hit it right off with the Varisians, including Kera.

Renae, if Kera and Renae are close friends, that would be an easy way to connect you with Stryn as well.

Henric, you might be a bit of a loner, but you're smart enough to realize there's safety in numbers when traveling the wilds.

Georgi, your story has you beyond the range of the caravan, which is fine.

So here's a possibility:

Traveling with the Caravan (as least temporarily): Renae, Henric, Kiley, and Kera

Roaming the Woods: Georgi and Stryn

About Ovirid Thorvirson

Background:

Spoiler:
As with any young dwarf, Ovirid was trained as a warrior, but it became obvious to his superiors that his constant tinkering was something their community could benefit from. He was excused from military service and apprenticed to a pair of traveling tinker gnomes who taught him a great deal about traps, locks, and other mechanisms.

His lessons lasted several years and he enjoyed them greatly, but when he returned home, it was to a community decimated by invasion and disease. When he reached the gate, he found his old sergeant, who refused him entrance. "Lad, ye're family's all gone. Yer ma was one of the first to go to Torag's forges after the disease hit. Yer da and brother fought to heal the stricken until they were overcome, too. They're heroes, boy. But the disease is still within our 'alls -- I cannae let you in after all your family's been through. Go, find another dwarven hall to have you, and do your family proud."

The grief-stricken dwarf didn't even know where to find another dwarven hall that wasn't connected to his former home. He turned from the gate and wandered blindly for a time, coming across a camp circled by colorful wagons. The halflings were only too happy to have him, and Ovirid found himself, quite by accident, with a foster family. He decided he would thereafter be Ovirid Thorvirson, to honor his father, Thorvir Stoneson.

He has traveled with them for a time and learned even more from them, but is starting to yearn for dwarven company. So when he heard a rumor of a dwarven community near "that Keep o' Kerrigan's," he wished his halfling "brethren" well and set out on his own to find the Keep or a caravan headed that direction.

After spending some time in the Cinderlands aiding some dwarven brethren regain possession of an ancient dwarven citadel, he tried to settle down, but found himself wanting to see more of the world. Wishing his new friends well, he traveled from the Cinderlands to the coast where he encountered an old friend from his days with the halfling caravan.

The human, a Pathfinder, was on his way back to Sothis. Ovirid went along and found himself on a expedition into the desert to find legendary pyramids of ancient pharoahs. He left the pyramid with a blindfold and a 5000-year-old curse, but he's confident of his new friends - the curse will be lifted.
