Thank you for running this game, it was a good run and it was lots of fun.

Hope to play in one of your games in the future.

To everyone else, hope to see you around, this was a good group.

Just noticed the ooc, so there can only be one adjustment to my disks. I will look into making a second level version of it.

Taken into account,
I figure if I can do the research to change the target to another target we could make a train of disks. I would have the hawk set to one disk, then the next disk set to the person riding that disk, essentially the disk is attuned to the person in front of you.

Since they currently have a 2 hour duration it would be an hour on hour off of casting. I figured that I could cast them while I was riding one.

Sorry for the delay, hopefully things are back to normal at work.

Figure post this here to not disrupt the game thread.

With planning ahead Keaton will suggest this even before others leave. He would ask if the group would be interested in him improving his magic floating disks to be pulled by his hawk. This will allow them to make a chain of disks to go up river against the current at the flight speed of a hawk. This could be achieved by ritual casting the spell over and over again for everyone the whole journey (my disks last 2 hours each). This will allow us to travel the landscape much faster than with horses and be more comfortable.

He says that he does not have enough money to complete the research and would need gold to complete it. But he also argues that this is an investment that would be cheaper than buying horses.

Thoughts?

At the inn:

With the dwarf in custody Keaton will go to the dwarf's room and rummage through his things. He is looking for two things; something to pay the 150 gp he feels the dwarf owes him and he is also looking for any other clues that could shed more light on the events of the night.

Keaton will also start doing some spell research on his floating disk. The goal is to be able to cast it so it can target another creature (i.e. the disk follows that creature). The hope of this will be able to have his familiar pull the disk while he sits on it.

To all my games.

I have been covering an extra department at work. Originally it was for a week while the guy hiked part of the Appalachian Trail. But he got seriously injured, got separated from his group, spent the night alone in the woods, during heavy rain, and almost died.

I am covering for him for the rest of the week and have found posting difficult. If I am holding up a game please bot me, but I will try and stay on top of things. Hopefully things will be back to normal Monday.

As for the plan, I was thinking more of sending a scouting group that would not attack. Just get Intel so we could fast forward the week. Hopefully the scouting group could figure out a plan to get into the fort, and we could leave the inn with the correct gear nedded.

To Chalaska.
I will discuss with the others and will let you know if I will continue to run the inn.

To the Dwarf.
Your escapades have cost me 150 gold, indirect it may be, it was still your actions.

To the group.

Keaton walks back to the group, cleaver in one hand dwarf beard in the other.

I have an idea, maybe the group could scout ahead and see this fort of the river. Get some information on what we will walk into in a few days. I would like to not tarnish our name by breaking my word.

Keaton stays creepy quiet listening to the dwarf speak.

If Chalaska doesn't...:

If she does not ask about Scholar or Grimjaw Keaton will speak up.

Wait.

Keaton goes to the kitchen, gets a meat cleaver, then returns. Visibly keeping it in his hand as he walks around the inn past the party. Holding it in his hand and mockingly using it to clean under his nails.

He has several questions for the dwarf, if he feels he is being lied to he will shave off the dearf's beard with the cleaver.

Lie to me I shave off your beard with the cleaver. Lie to me after I have your beard I get creative with the cleaver. Understood?

He will let the dwarf answer before continuing.

Tell me about Scholar and Grimjaw. Everything.

You owe me a hundred and fifty gold, how will you be paying me back?

What evidence do you have against Chalaska and Bratrhen that you did not create?

Who else did you work with for this scheme.

If he keeps lying after having his beard shaved off, Keaton will tell him that he will be getting more skilled interrogationers to come and assist with the dirty work (aka consult with the party)

What does the group want to do?
Stay here the remaining days?
Or break the agreement and chase Scholar?

I am glad that the gold was recovered. May I sit in and listen to your interrogation? I am curious to hear if he mentions this Scholar, or Grimjaw. Maybe see what he says if you throw those names at him. As for chasing Scholar, I am unsure at the moment, it will not be tonight. I do not wish to break my word even at the expense of loosing my property. If this dwarf owns anything of value he has a debt to pay to me, one hundred and fifty gold piece debt. If has nothing I plan to shave his beard off and shackle him. He will be chained to a sink in the back living off scraps of food from the plates he cleans while scrubbing dishes until he pays me back. Does he have any gold teeth?

Keaton finds Chalaska immediately on his return to the inn, taking her aside for a private talk.

I have found out some information about this Scholar bastard. He is part of a group that follows someone called Grimjaw. They are fixing up a castle some forty miles up river in the slumber hills. Do you know of this Grimjaw or castle?
I seek your advice, would it be better to abandon my post here at the inn to track down the stolen coin, crush the pirates, set fire to their castle, break Grimjaw's jaw to wire it in a more jolly look, and take their stuff for the hassle of this entire event. Or would you prefer I finish my duty here and try and track them down when it is complete. I do not know your boss well, your organization well, or this town well. I assume finishing out the duty is the safe bet, but that will send a message that the inn can be messed with. But charging out the door sends the message that your inn is impulsive. I will take your advice to heart and I trust your judgment.

Keaton looks ill at the thought of walking, why couldn't they just take the slow ship put their feet up and let this fisherman and kids paddle them up river. Three gold is a lot of money but at least they would be comfortable. He thought of how he needed to make his betterer disk be pulled by something else them himself.

Fine we will walk. What side of the river is that fort on? Is there anything else we should know about it? Like a moat of broken glass and cyphlus.

After the responses he will address the group.
We may want to let Chalaska know what we are doing so she does not think we double crossed her. She would be the type to send assassins out for us.

I can assure you the Zhents do not own the law in Red Larch. It is a long and complicated tale, just know the deed is for the Harpers and that is all I can say. What are the Goldenfields?
The pirates accost boats forty miles up river? Could your services be bought to bring us up river maybe thirty miles? You plan to go and fish there anyway yes? Allow us to pay your toll for a round trip for simply ferrying us part of the way to our goal. You may get lucky and find there is no longer a toll to pay on the river when we are done with them.

Rest easy we are deputies from Red Larch. We seek Scholar, that bogus-bilefilled-blueskined-brigand just pulled a heist over from the Zhent inn. He stole from me and the inn, and wrote us cocky notes to put salt in the wounds. We are looking for him, or information to where he would of gone.

At Chalaska
What kind of presence do the Zhents have on the docks!? Close them if you can, they have my property and your gold!

He continues to talk as he walks from the room, expecting all to follow him. His voice is not panicked, but more frantic like a person who has discovered they have been ripped off.

Captain Shoalar. Captain Shoalar. A thousand curses on Captain Shoalar! Has anyone ever heard of CAPTAIN SHOALAR!? Chalaska, normally I value human life but it would please me greatly to watch you slowly remove his insides as he squirms in pain. SHOALAR!!! Pirate? BRIGAND!? THIEF!? SHOALAR THE WORD is POISON TO SAY!!!!!!

When the mouthy cleric returns we can go as a group to lock the gate then search the tower. Leave two men you trust the most to watch the storeroom while we are gone. Tell them I will personally remove their testicles if they fail, also tell them I have never cut off anyone’s testicles before so in addition to it being an unpleasant feeling there will be some trial and error that could make for added discomfort.

Keaton scratches his head absent-mindedly, stopping with a pause of revelation.

Under his breath Dammit.

The books? Come with me now. Kenna, Narnel make sure nobody does anything foolish down here for a moment.

Keaton RUNS to his room to intercept Molok and the others, Chalaska in tow. Wearing a concerned look as he barges into the room he asks Molok.

After Aterro, leaves with Molok and the guard; Keaton will address Chalaska privately with the group.

My gods. That cleric needs to loosen up the armor a bit and relax. So let's cover the basics.

  • Someone got into the box with all the keys, how did they do that? Can you account for your key?
  • Someone wants to discredit you, and maybe me. Or maybe they wish to discredit your organization or inn?
  • At the moment two hundred gold is not accounted for, which may be found shortly. Is there anything else of importance that someone would go through such lengths to acquire? You do not need to tell me what it is, but a confirmation of a grander target would be appreciated.
  • The cleric of not any fun , we should try and not kill him, it may be useful to have a neutral person looking at things.
  • I still think this is all an elaborate scheme to distract us from something. Is there anything that you can think of even not behind locked doors?
  • I know we are inmocent, so as fingers get pointed let us investigate those pointing them.
  • Is there any other places you could recommend searching?

Keaton searches under his shirt to see if he still had the key.

Can my companions please search this room for hidden things or doors. This may of been a distraction to get us out of the room.

Are you a dumb person?
Spoken to a guard that knows Chalaska, also with a pause afterwards.

All, save for the representative of Torm, know Chalaska is not a dumb person. What we are looking at is what a dumb person would do, or what someone trying to frame someone would try and achieve. I see this to prove her to be more innocent, especially since she requested we search her room so we could move the investigation forward to find the true thief.

Speaking to the group calmly
OK I do not usually yell, but do excuse my rudeness.

With that he wiggled his fingers and a loud horrible horn sounded in the center of the room trying to drown out the commotion. A look of intense vulgar anger takes over his face while he yelled.

Will people calm down and shut up before I start turning you all into blocks of ice to chill the ale!

When he has control of the room again he clears his throat with a small cough, returning to a normal tone.

Now, yes we will search Chalaska's room. I believe she is being framed and they most likely left a clue or something there for us to find. But I still believe she is innocent. We are falling into the thief's plans, confusion, the more we point fingers the more we run around in circles, and the more time there is to cover tracks. So, a quick search of her room please to see if there is any misdirection from the thief.

First, yes please whomever has the note give it here.

Did anyone actually watch Nalaskur leave the walls? I have only known him for an hour or so and this would be a cleaver ruse if he was to pull a heist.

Next, I require that we be given flour from the kitchen in buckets. If our intruder is invisible he will not be for long.

Next, if I have to yell again there will be consequences, you are to raise your hand and wait to be called on.

Next, Chalaska, I believe you, mind your tone with your allies.

Next, let us check the southern tower.

Then I will cast magic to detect magic auras. After each step I will reevaluate this plan and make adjustments as needed. Any questions.

The last bit was said more as a statement, Keaton did not appear to be requesting any questions from those present.

Stand down. I trust her. Let us return to the taproom and find this war cleric. This prisoner is a spineless snot, throwing poisoned spiders at us. Is that a crime here, attempting to injury an inn employee? I think he is being used as a pawn in Molok's mystery third person idea. If he cannot provide any useful information I would like him punished to the full extent of the laws of the inn, or make up some laws to punish him by. New law for throwing poisoned spiders at your inn keeper.

Death stare at the prisoner.

I believe you are the now on my shit list.

Agreed. If he tries anything funny break his hands. Let us see him try throwing poisoned spiders with broken hands, jerk.

Keaton will lead the way to Chalaska, letting the guards accompany their prisoner.

Stands back and lets the others deal with the insects.

To Molok. I think I am gonna yell down stairs for a guard.

When Kendrin gets back in his room to collect the sides Keaton will yell downstairs for the guards.

Keaton places Molok between him and the spiders and casts ray of frost on the closest one.

Pants already around his ankles, but covered over by his oversized tunic.

I know where room 12 is, not so much the strong room. We will look into room 12 and meet you at the strong room if we find nothing.

He pulls up his pants and fumbles with his belt buckle as he moves to the direction of room 12.

When Chalaska and her troops are out of sight, and Keaton is alone with his group.

Also, room 12 is right here and I do not feel like running.

Keaton starts to disrobe for Chalaska.

Those keys are quite large, I do not have them. How the hell did someone get back here unnoticed? As boring as this has been I really like this job, I would not ruin it.

If no one stops him, he will strip everything off.

Over the last few days would we of been able to gather any info or rumors?

How about me and Kenna on the morning shift, you and Ember on the evening shift, and Molok can keep everyone in line during the night.

Addressing Chalaska

Does the inn shut down its tavern during the night? Will one of us be required to man a post during the overnight?

I was assuming the inn was open 24/7, but it probably not. I am thinking the inn's guards watch the overnight.

Keaton continues to be pleasant.

That is really straight forward. Thank you for the explanation, we will run this inn by the guidelines you have outlined. Umm... Glasseye, that will be our secret word incase we expect either one of us being an impostor or need to secretly communicate trouble.

To the rest of the group.

Glasseye, remember it. Well how do you want to break up the responsibilities. I am the keymaster, which is fun to say, Keymaster Keaton, yes, has a ring to it. But besides that we should plan on who will be manning the inn, break it up into work shifts. I do not mind doing the afternoon to midnight shift, I imagine the crowd will be most rowdy then as well as fun. Is anyone a night or morning person? I imagine breaking the shifts into three shifts, morning, evening, overnight, would be best. I would suggest there being two people on the evening shift, it should be the most busy and crowded then. Sound good?

Later Keaton will get a cord and tie the key to it. He will wear it under his shirt like a necklace, which will make it hard to steal or detect.

Big smile as everyone scurries at Chalaska commands.

I like you, and applaud the power you hold over this place. I will speak openly and honestly, we have nothing to hide, and no doubt you could gather information about us in short time. So to answer your question, our group was deputized in Red Larch for unrooting a cult under their town, killing a necromancer that was preying on travelers, and helping their sheriff.

I think your inn keeper looked at the badges we were wearing and figured we could keep the shenanigans away while he does chores. The news this is a Zhent establishment is new to me. I do not care one way or the other as long as the promised payment is paid after our tenday stay.

Why he did not choose you, or any other more acquainted with the inn is beyond me. I hope you take no insult on us running the inn, we only are doing what we were asked. My concerns are few, but I have several questions.

Is there someone collecting tabs? Or is that our duty to collect coin? Is there a written list of prices or is there someone else that will be taking care of these duties? How do we secure the coin, I do not want to do any of this incorrectly and find I have a tab to pay off due to mismanagement.

Regarding this key in my pocket. How do I know who has access to what is behind the locked door? Is there a secret phrase or handshake to look for? If you are needed for the other key can I plainly ask you, wake you at all hours of the night for these requests? Again, I assume that if you have a secret door, with two secret keys there should be some secrecy on all levels of this topic that we must abide by.

The clients here, are they usually rowdy? Are there bar fights? What is not allowed, as in rules and customers.

I know I ask many questions, but when given a job like this I want to ensure we do it correctly.

At least he did not take anything out of my pocket.

To Chalaska

Maybe you could give us some explanation on a few of these details. I have found that assuming details that are uncertain usually does not end well. Would you like to talk plainly out here or behind closed doors?

Edit

Keaton speaks slightly louder than normal, so that others that were overhearing their conversation may hear, but not loud enough to make an announcement.

Let us return to Bargewright to talk with the inn keeper. We have no more money and it would be best to take the offered employment.

So was any of that reading enlightening? I am going to speak with this inn keep if anyone wants to join.

Keaton will approach the inn keep about the job they were offered.

So we are ready to hear our responsibilities and how you want this place run. Also, I would like to request a list of names that are trustworthy and not trustworthy, this way if a problem arises we do approach the wrong people for aid. It will also give us a good idea of who we should keep an extra eye on.
