Appearance: Karista is largely shrouded by the hooded cloak and veil she wears, but beneath that a keen observer will note her wiry, muscular build, her carefully shaved head, the whirling tattoos that arc across her tanned skin, and the buffed, dark, riveted leather tunic standing in contrast to her well worn hide pants. Strapped low across her back and obvious through her cloak is a two-handed curved blade of unusual design. Attached to her belt is a short cape-like projection of cuirboulli, protecting her legs from the barbs of the wicked looking spiked bolas clacking behind her. Though obscured her expression is still unfriendly, and there is a thoroughly haunted look to her dark eyes.

Background:

Spoiler:

Karista was born to a celebrated warrior family of the Tamiir-Quah. She was trained with blade and bola from the time she could walk and had become a fully recognized warrior by age 19. However less than a year later, her warband was ambushed by marauding Orcs and most of her confederates were slaughtered - only she and three other Shoanti were taken captive. Her tribe responded in force and four days later she was free again, however her captivity left a dark legacy: she was soon discovered to be pregnant.
The elders of the tribe deemed that since she was carrying an enemy within her, she herself was a threat. She was no longer welcome in the Clan - her only atonement could come once she had killed the bastard abomination with her own hands.
She wandered to the southeast for several months until she could bear to walk no further, and there, in the foothills of the Iron Mountains, she was discovered by a Varisian caravan. A Varisian druid took pity on her and convinced the caravan to make camp for a few days. Soon Karista delivered her child - her path to redemption was at hand, but Karista suddenly found herself unable to follow through and murder her newborn son. That night she dreamt of a wise old mother figure taking the child from her arms, blessing it, and giving it to the Varisian Druid. She awoke with a start and within minutes the Druid had come to find her - she had had the same exact dream. She knew that she was ill-equipped to properly care for this child, so with great trouble she left her son with the Druid and fled into the night. Lacking any sort of other direction, she continued south and east passing thorough forest and edge land trading posts, barely noticing her surroundings at all. Finally, about to collapse at the very edge of her endurance, she saw a faint glow on the horizon. On midnight that evening, she stumbled into Korvosa.

Korvosa:

Spoiler:

Once the seemingly requisite scrounging and reliance on charity grew old, Karista found something akin to a steady job. A questionable local imported goods merchant named Murdoc Bly hired her on as a store guard; a role she filled simply by being physically impressive and hostile looking. After several months of doing little more than posturing and scaring off would be shoplifters Karista was becoming anxious for a change.
One night while she was walking through the market she was bumped into roughly by a jaundiced and spindly old man with a wide brimmed hat, who proceeded to make a commotion about how Karista had attacked her. The guard showed up in short order, detaining her and after the man made a remark that she smelled like a drug den, they searched her belongings and found a packet of empty vials all reeking of Shiver! The man grinned cruelly as the manacles came out, and Karista, so stunned she could barely plead her innocence, panicked and bolted away into the crowd. The guards gave a brief chase but she was much too quick, and the old man simply disappeared in the commotion. Not knowing where else to turn she told the whole story to Bly, who aided her in pawning her distinctive hide shirt and procuring a concealing cloak - all for a price of course. Karista is becoming increasingly anxious as the weeks pass - she is wanted for possession of drugs and resisting arrest, and at the rate Bly is extorting her she'll be broke before long. She has become very good at concealing her expressions and caging her words, but she can't hold out forever...
