Hi, GM. I'd like to apply with this fighter. I'll probably adjust his mechanics, but he'll fill a simple melee role. What will you be using for maps?
Kale Moore returns to Sargava as defeated as he'd left it 2 years ago. He didn't have the stomach for the kind of work available in the Shackles. But he had nothing to look forward to in Sargava. He didn't want to go back to the docks. He wondered if Danae had drunk herself to death yet. Or if she may have gone home with the wrong stranger and been murdered. No, she doesn't deserve that. Maybe he'll get back and find that she's shacked up with one of the other dock workers... hmm, hopefully, she's just drunk herself to death.
Kale used to think he was destined for something greater. Now he knows that everyone thinks that when they're young and stupid. He didn't even want that much. Just didn't want to spend his life on the docks like his father. And he'd done it, too. Saved up the money to start the grocery he'd always wanted. But then Arden got sick. Nobody could help his only child, but they were happy to try everything and charge him for it. After Arden passed, Danae couldn't take it and began her shameful carousing. The shop was long closed, and the whispering and snickering behind his back as Danae made her rounds made working on the dock more difficult every day.
Kale had always done well when called upon to defend himself or his friends in fights, and he also exuded a stoic coolness that discouraged a lot of conflicts from escalating. He felt that his tough reputation was deserved and would serve him well in the Shackles. He'd found work easily, but the cruelty and violence of the Shackles disturbed him, even as jaded as he was now. He knew he wouldn't last long there. He survived, but learned and earned little. He wondered how long it would take to save up passage out of Sargava.
Hope he's okay. IIRC, some of his last posts were referring to posting again later that day or the next, so the dropoff sounds unexpected. If we were in a proper adventure path, I'd suggest looking for another GM, but since we didn't get that far, it looks like Kale is going back to the waiting room.
With Mario's help, Kale rolls the corpse over and looks for wounds to his front. Then, at Erina's urging, he takes off his mask, and steps out of the way for all to see.
"Ugh. Should've figured. Wonder if the grindys were working for the killer, or just an opportune time?" He crouches and looks more closely at Thanzeril, to make sure he's unconscious. "Why would they spare Thanzeril? Unless they were both rendered unconscious by a spell or poison first. But then why stab Sephriel in the back? Let's turn him over, and see if he was stabbed anywhere in the front." Kale moves to Sephriel's shoulders, and looks to Mario with a wave and a point toward Sephriel's feet.
"Oh, and sorry about all the swearing; life at sea, you know how it is."
Kale responds with a smile, "What swearing? I grew up on the docks, I've heard it and used it all myself."
He claps Ro on the shoulder. "Forget it. Those things were slippery. I couldn't get a blade on them, either. I was just lucky I wasn't swarmed like you were." He turns to Fortenns and Erina as they pick themselves up. "I'm going to go check on Sephrial." He then heads below deck with Mario. If any of the injured teammates follow, he helps them down the steps.
Kale moves Erina, Fortenns, and Ro close to the mast first, and then helps with any other downed crewmen. Then he finds Mario among the standing wounded, and offers his hand as they both get healed.
"Thanks for taking out the one on my back. I'd like to replace that drink you lost to repay you. My name's Kale."
Seeing Erina fall angers Kale, but seeing the grindylows begin to run, he decides to try chasing off the one that dropped her instead of getting revenge. He can't afford to swing and miss again. "You think you're big because you can kill an old lady! TRY ME!
Intimidate to demoralize grindy in I5: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 (oh and +4 for being larger, so 21) vs DC 11; should be shaken for 3 rounds, but hopefully he just joins the others in fleeing.
Not having any luck hitting the gridylow at the edge of the ship, he turns to the one attacking him from behind. It proved a good idea, as his blade clips the monster before he can dodge away, and the monster falls, flailing his tentacles in his death throes.
"That's more like it." Kale moves closer to Erina to try to close ranks. He tries to draw the attention of one of the grindylows (the one in H3) from the badly injured woman. "You're next!" he shouts at the lethal little bugger.
Attack #3: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16; damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Move: to H4
I assume they have the AC and HP listed in the bestiary on the PRD. If Kale doesn't drop this one, disregard his movement.
He posted in other games on Friday and Sunday. Maybe he just lost track of this one. If he doesn't post in an hour or two, I think it'd be fair to DMPC him for a round.
Kale feels the spear of the grindylow as he stands up, and tries to return the favor, but he finds himself still off balance from standing and his blade swings harmlessly short of the little menace.
Actions:
I went ahead and rolled Grindylow 2's AoO on Kale.
Grindy 2 AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Kale attack on Grindy 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
So did the rolls change while you were posting? Because 13 wouldn't have hit Kale's AC. If he did get hit, did he take any damage? Or just the trip attack?
Unless the site's bugging, I've never had a roll change if I just hit preview to see the roll's result before adding the fluff.
Kale makes his way up on deck, frustrated by the lack of progress the group was making in their investigation. He looks around for a place the group can talk discreetly.
Since nobody better suited to the task volunteered, Kale tries to build a rapport with the captain himself. He introduces himself and tells him: "I've worked on the docks almost my whole life, often as a dock foreman. I know the value of hard work. You've got a good crew here. Have they been with you long?"Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
While discussing the poisoned food with the others, Kale agrees with Erina: "I think you could be right that the poisoning's unintentional. Fortenns, we should check the kitchen and see if we can find the poison there."
"I've seen a couple dirty looks cast in your direction, but I should hope a professional assassin would be less obvious. If anyone could get friendly with the captain, maybe we could find out if any members of the crew have joined recently?"
"Is there a contact at the Mordant Spire who knows your plan? I don't want to be held liable for failing to protect you on your way home when we get there."
"Or, I could put myself about a bit, a lonely woman at sea in need of company."
Kale is unable to disguise his bewildered disgust at the diseased-looking woman's suggestion. He was already angered by their host's irreverent attitude towards his own life. He turned to the man in the mask.
"You're right to pay us well, then. Some people have more respect for the gift of life they've been given. To throw it away just to find out who doesn't like you defiles the suffering of those we've already lost."
"If more than one faction wants you dead, you're only going to discover which one has the quickest blade. Tell us about these factions. What do they have to gain from your death?"
"And so my protectors have gathered," he says in slight mirth.
For a moment, Kale starts to panic, worried that the elf recognized his true motive. He could care less about protecting his employer. He just wanted passage out of town. Some pay would be helpful, but he'd consider jumping ship at the Mordant Spire, wherever that was, if Sephrial was planning on coming back. As he continued speaking, however, Kale realized the elf's sarcastic phrase wasn't an accusation. The sigh he released under his breath nearly made him miss Sephrial's unusual revelation.
He tried not to look shocked. "Do you mean you think someone you're traveling with now is planning to kill you? Or do you expect an enemy is planning to intercept you along the way?"
While applicants were being evaluated, Kale stood near a window. He faced inside, but looked out often, giving the impression he'd rather be somewhere else. Many of the local applicants in the bar acknowledged him as they waited, but none stood with him for long.
Kale Moore looks like many of the other rough locals that applied for the job. Taller and leaner maybe. Definitely quieter and older than most. Gray has infiltrated his short dark hair at the temples, but it hasn't yet made an appearance in his thick mustache or the stubble on his chin and cheeks. But the skin on his face has the same drawn, weathered look as the others who spend so much of their time laboring in the sun. His equipment looks equally humble. His hide armor is water-stained in spots and his backpack has a couple patches sewn onto it.
Done all. Added a shield and changed his armor, and added some travelling equipment and my encumberance info. To the stat block you suggested, I added initiative.

- Has one more language to choose to start.
- Starting gold is 300gp. You are either 237gp off in leftover gold or have more to spend.
These two I'd limited intentionally. The language, because I didn't know what other races are most common in the town he's from (or on the ships that come in). I think he only would've learned another language from exposure. I've chosen Dwarven for now, but if there's a more common language that he'd have come into contact with in town or on the docks, I'd like to select that instead.
I left his wealth low to reflect his background. I figure if he had that much money, he'd have left town already. I don't picture him as being driven to become an adventurer - more that it's something he'll be drawn into through events as they occur.
So you expect we'll start the AP at level 2 or will we reboot our characters when we begin the AP? (I'm okay with either.) And will we be able to revise our characters after the player's guide comes out?
Maybe it's working now... anyways, this is what I'd posted earlier:
Checking in. Will try to revise character later today. I could see Kale picking up disable device, but he wouldn't have trapfinding. If y'all can think of any options for a fighter to pick them up, let me know. He could take the Cosmopolitan feat for disable device, or he could be an urban ranger with the trapper archtype instead of a fighter to get both disable and trapfinding.
Testing... I posted in this thread already, but my post has disappeared. It can still be seen listed as a post by my alias, but it's not in the thread.

Kale's profile is updated with his stats. Black Shuck, I'd like to take "Threatening Defender" or "Reactionary" as his second trait. I believe they're from the Cheliax Pathfinder Companion and Second Darkness respectively, but I don't think they're regional. Would one of those be an approved trait (if Kale is chosen)?
