Background:
Even from a young age, Kalam had never really fit in anywhere. He was never one to hold to the conventions and restrictions that, especially in a place like Cheliax, governed the lives of other people. Such things had their place of course but more as obstacles to be bypassed on the way to any real measure of success. As one would imagine, such an outlook on life frequently placed him on the wrong side of people. His family, city officials, bitter husbands, ect. Truly, by the age of 18 Kalam found himself persocuted (unfairly by his estimation) by nearly the entirety of his hometown of Westpool. Seeking an escape from such narrow-mindedness and hoping to find somewhere he might be properly appreciated, Kalam found himself in the recruitment lines of the Chelish Army.

Of course, despite what the man at the recruitment office had insisted, Kalam had no intention of actually stepping foot on the front lines of any battlefield. After suffering the indignities on basic training, not to mention an ill-fated relationship with a former priestess, Kalam quickly maneuvered his way into the services of his detachment's quartermaster. A rather dour man by the name of Gales, largely fed up with everything his duties entailed after nearly three decades of service, was found to be quite amenable to handing over large amounts of responsibility to his most eager of assistants with little suspicion. So it was that Kalam found himself overseeing an ambitious collection of profiteering schemes, reaching from the lowliest of footsoldier to the most decorated officer. For his part, Kalam would have been quite satisfied to spend the remainder of his days nestled in his little corrupt corner of the world had it not been for one man.

At first glance Daeron seemed just another sycophantic junior officer. Kalam of course saw him for what he was, the center of his own intricate web of influence and corruption. He would have admired the man had he not had the infuriateing habit of quietly cutting all of Kalam's carefully placed ties whenever he desired something within the young quartermaster's sphere of influence. As for Kalam's counter efforts, while Daeron lacked the daring to pull off the most audacious of lies or the presence to remove problems in more public way, carefully planned schemes had a way of simply melting around the man. After a short but bitter cold war between the two, it became rather obvious that victory for either side would be far too costly. They eventually came to the realization that if they instead pooled their considerable talents, very little would be unattainable to them. Unfortunantly their quiet rivalry had severly damaged the pristine public reputations both had cultivated and thus it was quickly decided that the chelish army simply wasn't big enough for the pair of them anymore. Deserting was a simple enough matter in itself but keeping both their necks out of the noose would in future would require a certain amount of distance for the time being. With this in mind, Daeron and Kalam set out for the less restrictive but still familiar city of Magnimar to make their mark on the word at large.
