Since Kyra can use her power to heal herself, that might make you more likely to take Mass Cure for her deck than it would for Lini's. And taking Mass Cure might be a more viable option for a character that plays with an Arcane caster that stocks a movement spell or Amiri, since they can help arrange a meeting at a location.

Hawkmoon beats me to the punch...

I love that mental picture. The thought of Valeros just standing in front of a Hill Giant switching belts until the Hill Giant spontaneously combusts...

I think it is easy to get caught up in the story and like Cedfaz pointed out it makes sense that Mass Cure could be played when you were alone but it would be slightly wasteful. Personally I believe we are over thinking this. Going back to the core guidelines:

"Cards do what they say"
Mass Cure says "Reveal this card and choose another character at your location..."

"Cards don't do what they don't say"
Mass cure doesn't say "Reveal this card, you may choose another character at your location..."

I believe that as written Mass Cure clearly states a command to choose another character and not an option. Consider your character alone at a location with the Mass Cure spell. In this instance whether or not the card is telling you to do something impossible is actually dependent on if you decided to play Mass Cure. If you follow what the card says then you wouldn't reveal the card and the card would never tell you to do something impossible. For the card to actually tell you to do something impossible you have to first make a conscious decision to go outside the rules.

Finally "Allow for Abstractions"
Just because it makes sense to some people that mass cure could be played when you were alone doesn't necessarily mean that was the intent. We have to assume the intent was what is stated on the card until Mike or Vic or someone else official tells us differently.

For me it was the Strength spell

I almost got rid of it in the first two adventure decks and now I love it on Kyra. I am using her as more utility/exploration than heals and if I have my Longsword +2 in hand I play Strength at the start of my turn and then start burning blessings to explore. It just makes it really nice not to have to worry about saving the blessings for my combat check since the +3 gives me a nice cushion.

Harsk vs Merisiel

1.) Harsk's d8+3 on ranged combat averages a 7.5 with a min of 4 and max of 11, Merisiel would average a 6.5 with a min of 1 and max of 12. As stated by Orbis, this makes Harsk a much more reliable ranger.

2.) Harsk's weapon proficiency gives immediate full use of all ranged weapons with a preference to crossbows and throwing axes, Merisiel's high dexterity, higher strength than Harsk, and no initial weapon proficiency can make daggers a more viable option and makes longbows better once she has her weapon proficiency

3.) Harsk's ability to add to combat checks at other locations puts him in a fantastic support role while Merisiel's ability to add to her own combat check when she is alone makes her a great solo choice.

4.) Harsk you can look ahead and plan out each encounter. But Merisiel, with her evade ability, can just blindly run into anything and evade whatever she doesn't like.

Bottom line: the only similarity is they would both tend to use dexterity based weapons. If your friend was treating Harsk as a crappy Merisiel than it is definitely a good thing he switched to Ezren. If you couldn't tell from this post, I really enjoy playing Harsk...
