Playing by the standard rules, it becomes way too easy at higher levels to disrupt a spellcaster if you ready an action and attack while the spellcaster is casting.

In all honesty, have you ever tried completing a math puzzle after just banging your head? When some is wounded in combat, it surprises me that they are able to keep on their feet, let alone continue the complex evocation of a spell. Still, to keep the game balanced and allow spell-casters to have a chance, the concentration check exists. I would see little point in dropping or changing it.

The best decision would be to discuss this with your players and see what they think. After all, it is their game too. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Having read through the comments here, I thought I mention that I actually create and sell my own products, so I'm aware of the cost issues already. Interestingly enough, many of the players in South Africa (where I'm based) steal copies of the materials that want (in PDF format using something like LimeWire). Whilst I agree that it can be useful having the entire player's guide, etc. on ones' notebook, I personally have purchased every book I use. For the same reason, that I don't shoplift or steal anything else, including software, games, etc. My feeling is, if you can't afford it, don't buy it or steal it. Make up your own stuff or get the open source libary (mentioned above).

I'm thinking of starting a new D&D campaign based on some ideas I've got. ... Any other considerations that I haven't thought of?

Currently I am developing a new world called Cartha-Dhaal which is based on current D&D fantasy role-playing with some differences. So I can appreciate the enormous amount of work needed to produce a worthwhile and entertaining game world and of course, to do it in such good format as to later publish it.

The world of Cartha-Dhaal is different in that there are only nine gods, four sets of balanced gods and one neutral all-knowing watching god, The Eye. And of course, a lot of politics in each church. The story revolves very closely about these gods and the effect that they have on the everyday lives of the people living in the world itself.

So far, I have had four play-testing sessions to test the new materials, modifying them each time to improve their playablity, and ensuring that the game genre is enjoyable and entertaining.

One of the things I would like to do is open the world up to other game masters to help develop. If you're interested, I expect to look at releasing this for beta-testing shortly and would of course value any return suggestions.

I am visiting England for a few days and am always open to sharing a few ideas and joining (or hosting) a single game session. I am not exactly sure where Corby is in relation to where I'm visiting, being High Wilcombe, NW of London. If you're interested, email me on justin@cathedralx.com

Hello.

I am an experienced GM and have been hosting games for 18 years, mostly under Dungeons and Dragons (all versions) and also under other games. I am also the creator of the Cartha-Dhaal world, so I have some interesting experiences to share.

Whilst visiting the UK I would be happy to introduce the game and new styles of play to local players, either new or experienced.
