ok, so when exploring the dungeon and not in initiative, PC's can just walk without counting squares and the like?

I also want to thank you and everyone else who have been answering my questions the last couple of days for your support. It has been a great help.

I am familiar with the kinds of constraints a PC has during combat (3 actions/turn, one movement, one free, one standard), though the rulebooks I have are not explicitly clear on what can be done during a PC's turn during exploration (be it in a town, or in a room with treasure inside). Can he/she walk as long as they feel like and take as many actions as they want during their turn, or is there some sort of constraint during exploration? Or is the GM supposed to draw the line themselves?

when the opportunity comes to skillcheck (use of perception or reading a rune) arises, does the PC in question have to have a rank in said skill or have it as a class skill to even be eligible to do said skillcheck?

EX: there is a treasure chest in a small island, and it requires you to swim across. Does said PC have to have a rank in swim to be able to swim, or can they still attempt to skillcheck on swimming?

thank you both for the clarification =D.

I am new to Pathfinder (I have the beginner box), and not sure if this was addressed elsewhere, but I have a question about attacks that deal a particular type of damage.

Take for instance a simple cantrip like Ray of Frost; when it deals the 1d3 cold damage to target enemy, does the cold damage inflict any extra effects, like say for instance exhaustion? The book doesn't say, and I haven't found anything on the internet that talks about this.

Reason I ask is because I was browsing through the environmental hazards section, and it says any cold damage inflicted also causes exhaustion. Thing is this is under environmental hazards, so I am unsure if it's safe to assume a frost shot will exhaust its victim, or if a fireball will burn, etc.

If it does, I'd like to also know if there's anywhere I can refer to for the different kinds of elemental damages in Pathfinder, as well as the effects they inflict.
