I find I sometimes get the best use of my characters when I use archetypes. I'm a big fan of Uncharted, so I actually used the Archaeologist archetype for bards, which I find works out pretty well. It helps give alternative way of use classes without just using feats and skills. In 3.5, archetypes weren't widely used and the best way to change characters around using unique characters were the numerous base and prestige classes.
I would find Magi very powerful when used correctly. Those who hold back in spells don't really give much damage, yet those who do sling spells everywhere will quickly loose spells and soon be no use. Depending if you want a high AC, you will have a higher chance of loosing your spell. So it really it take strategy to build this class the way you want. IF you want to deal high damage and move quickly, then you have a higher chance of getting hit. It depends how you play and honestly, fighter/magus are the best combo.
If their spell requires a touch attack and they are making a weapon attack , I believe the weapon only takes the -2 from what I read, but if you use spellstrike, which allows you to channel your touch spell through your weapon, it's full round action, but you take no attack penalties. It counts as one attack. |
