Jon Moulton, eldest son of inquisitor Gilles Moulton. Gilles worked for many years As an inquisitor for the church of iomaedae . Gilles was attached to the church in Magnimar but also owned a small holding in the village of Black Briar about 10 days ride to the west of the city.
Gilles was away from home on a mission for the church when a mysterious fire broke out in the family home. Jon as the eldest and only son was always expected to protect the farm whist Gilles was away, that night however he failed in his duty. Eye witnesses swear they saw someone walk out of the inferno of the house and move off into the woodlands beyond. There was never any evidence to support this and Jon took no comfort in this story, the fire was his fault and he was responsible for the deaths of his mother Susan, and twin sisters Beth and Amy both only 10 years old. Jon always believed he had left a candle burning or hadn't raked the coals properly in the hearth before he retired to bed, he never woke until the fire was outside his bedroom door, by this time the whole house was ablaze and he had no chance of reaching his family. he was forced back by the flames and jumped out of the window, breaking his arm and leg as he crashed through the roof of the barn. It was the next day, as he was recovering from his ordeal that news of his fathers death came to him. The church refused to give full details of what had happened to him only he had died for the faith. At the age of 18 Jon's world collapsed! He returned to his family's home tortured and haunted by the events that he believed he caused. The barn still partially stood and it was there Jon made his home, he lived off the churches charitable payout for his fathers death and it was here Jon realised he would be haunted to the end of his days by the family he let down. Jon spiralled out of control as he fought to come to terms with his grief , he was betrothed to the millers daughter Karen however as his guilt and grief grew he began to drink heavily. he soon pushed karen away and steadily his mind crumbled, he began to experience strange occurrances and soon he could not cope with the strange noises, sudden gusts of chill air and the objects that would move of their own accord whenever he was around. Jon also began to manifest strange powers though he was mostly too drunk to appreciate them. During one heavy drinking session he fell through the rotted burned floor of his families home, why he was wandering there he could not say. He plunged into the cellar and swore that he had broken his leg again, he remembered the bone jutting through his trousers , but after he blacked out his leg was healed, a cut above it has bled profusely and he put it down to the drink and his tortured mind. Nearly five years passed and Jon became a virtual recluse the town sympathetic to him at first but steadily they became afraid of his rages and strange ways, always talking to himself or cursing things that were not there.. Strange stories started to go around town about him, one such story was from a young girl, she was out late walking back to town passes jons house when she was set upon by wolves, she swears she ran to jons house the wolves behind her she could feel their breath on her about to bite when a sudden heat bathed her and an unearthly scream came from behind her, she fell and turned to see Jon screaming at the wolves, the biggest one engulfed in flames that shrieked "like the souls in hell" Was how she put it. She ran and ran until she got home. Her story was told and re told but no evidence of the wolves or jons powers was found and Jon when questioned had no memory of it. It was stories like these that piqued the professors interest as he was passingthrough on his way to Magnimar . the professor sought Jon out and after much determination on the professors part Jon agreed to his help. he stayed with Jon and studied him and learned all that had happened. He soon came to believe that the fire was not natural, there were some tell take signs he said in the ruin, of how the burn pattern lay and how certain other structures like the barn never fully burned down, He helped Jon to understand his new powers and deduced he was an oracle most probably tied to iomaedae as his father was, though the powers he manifested were otherworldly and not at all common in other oracles he had encountered. In a real sense the professor saved Jon, pulling him from the depths of his alcoholism and absolving him of at least some of his guilt, they vowed to stay in contact and if he could the professor would try to find out what had happened to his father. Jon stopped drinking after that and every day he vowed to the professor he would not drink and stay sober and sickness would soon descend on him if he broke his vow and had a drink, and it wasn't until the letter arrived notifying him of the professors death that he picked up a bottle again and with the professor gone he no longer had anyone to make his vow to. |
