I did a 3D version of Thistletop the cheap way.

It doesn't stack up to the intricate work that Kovok did, but it is fun and fairly easy to do.

Scale the map up to the right size (1 inch squares). Print it out and glue it to a card board backing (I used spray adhesive). Then cut some 2" high mat board (scrap mat board is really cheap at a craft store). Hot glue gun the walls on the map and stick the mat pieces down on it.

I've done some other methods (like cutting the Catacombs of Wrath out of foam board with a jigsaw) but none are as easy as some mat board and a glue gun.

For the next path I'm going to use the spray adhesive to print out some texture on the mat board so the walls won't just be in black.

The texture Kovok got on his dungeon looks really good.
