just popping in to say hi. :)

And it makes sense for me to take one of the middle watches as a purely Martial class since I do not need uninterrupted rest.

Jeggs waits on the outskirts of town with his hood up and beak hidden behind the raised lapel of his jacket. "Pigheaded bastards..." he mumbled from time to time. "What of your questioning, mates? Any leads? I hope you managed to find decent folk, or at least ones who didn't see you ride into town with me..."

Jeggs asks for a few minor things, mostly trail foods and spices he had become fond of, and a Shiny new buckler caught his eye. After a bit, though, he was ready to get his precious Sabres back in his hands and get on with it. He sits with the others as they gather, meticulously sharpening between each tooth of his blades with a special rod.

"And well I hope they do not, friend." Jeggs smiles genuinely.

Jeggs nods grimly and turns to his new found compatriots. "Very well... Mates, I suppose this is where we become acquainted with one another rather quickly. I feel you should know that I will not hesitate to do what is necessary in the line of duty or in defense or service of those who need it. Also know that I will not stand with one who would cut down a man for any lesser reason. I need to know that your stances do not vary from mine to such a degree that we cannot work with one another." His tone is not harsh or aggressive, but it is decidedly unwavering. He hands the portraits around and begins scrawling a few supplies on a scrap of paper. Ol' birdbrain here is turning out to be much more of a wordy bastard than I had thought, but it's kinda fun to write.

Jeggs thoughtfully speaks after a few moments of pondering. "I am of no such moral high ground myself, though I am not what one would consider a greedy man either. We should be provided for: Gear, food, repairs, what have you; and upon our return I should think you'd be willing to compensate according to the worth of the item retrieved and perhaps any excessive hardship we should encounter along the way?" "Hmm. I suppose someone must think highly of me. I'm just a drifter with a penchant for pointy things." Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 SM DC19: Jeggs is intentionally downplaying his prowess. If GM decides so there may be a dc to recognize me on reputation alone for the events in my backstory.

Ok GML suggested a few corrections which I happily made to my backstory, and so here they are. Lamira is apparently scarier than I had surmised, meaning that Jeggs' freedom would be much more plagued if it had happened at all. Therefore, Jeggs was bought at the mountain pass and taken to Ispep, which is an independent settlement in the Northern tribes. Also, Trolls are weak against cold Iron, not fire, in this world. Jeggs is allowed to know this because he grew up near the Evergreen, and the Nobles happened to have a collection of spears from some famous battle that were cold Iron. It was these that the slaves rained upon the trolls before Jeggs attacked them head on. Also, Catkin do not exist, therefore Jeggs' best friend was actually a Grippli named Kroak MacTavish. (Remember that cultures are very mixed in Trade town so that may not sound very Grippli.)

Got it! Finally finished his backstory and man am I happy with how it turned out! I can't wait to get into this character! Also, I hope it's ok that I gave names and characteristics to two places on the map. It has been years, though, so no reason to say that things haven't changed to suit your ideas. The Rise of a Hero:
Jeggs was born on the outskirts of the evergreen where he was raised in a small town with a rare mixed community. It is here that races of steel and races of nature come to trade and sometimes settle. His Father worked as a caravan guard, and his mother had died to an illness when Jeggs was very young. They lived simply, but he didn't mind. He spent most of his days with his closest friend, a Catkin kit named Tikkle. When their fathers would go on convoys together, Jeggs and Tikkle would look out for one another. One Fateful night, though. The caravan returned without either of its guards. The duo was alone. They survived though. Sometimes with honest work, sometimes with charity, and sometimes they did what they had to. Eventually, corruption found its way into Trade town. Tikkle and Jeggs, just shy of adulthood, were labeled wards and forced into a glorified prison camp for children in the guise of an orphanage. Eventually the racists in charge of said orphanage saw fit to separate the pair, selling Tikkle by sea and Jeggs by land. He was taken by a mountain pass into Lamira. He was terrified at first that he would be taken into the Fog, but he was saved by a noble in Ispep, a rural county in the foothills. Not the strongest even amongst Tengu, he was assigned indoor work. He quickly showed potential in leadership and was put in charge of the servants and slaves of the entire estate. Soon though, he found himself accused of accosting the Lady of the house when she herself was the aggressor. He was at the edge of the property, fit to be executed, when the trolls descended from the mountains. Though they weren't common here, they were occasionally a threat for Trade town, and Jeggs knew how to kill them. He freed himself from his bondage and wasted no time in returning to his fellow slaves whom he knew to be strong of will and might. He found them locked in their usual quarters as the workday had not begun. The commotion had reached them, though, and panic was all that was to be found. Jeggs found it within him to speak, and so he did: "Men! Steel yourselves! Yes, there are beasts coming, and yes, they will likely destroy this place before the watch or anyone hears our distress. You may think this is a time to escape. If we do, some of us, SOME of us may get away, only to spend years in fear of a guard seeing our brand and capturing us." At this point the chatter and heckling stopped at once for the truth in his words. "But if we stay put, we will die. And so I beg of you, stand with me. I can kill these beasts with you. We slaves are as hardy and tenacious as any of the guard battalions, and we can fight like a whole garrison! I have a plan, so stand with me as your captain, and no being will DARE claim to own any of you ever again!" What cheers there may have been were cut short by the thundering footsteps of the trolls approaching the main area. Jeggs led through the back door, hoping that someone would follow him. His plan began to play out nicely: A sizeable following had joined him in getting into the main house through the cellar, and his earlier path had led the beasts into a barn where they would be delayed a few moments more whilst fighting over eating a few goats and maybe an ox or two. He found the display case where several weapons were showcased, including his own sabres that were bought with him by chance. After arming as many as he could, he made for the larder where he knew of a huge store of oil and other flammable substances. The plan all came to fruition when the trolls approached the main house and were ambushed with flaming oil, arrows, and heavy objects from above and with the surprising skill and tenacity of Jeggs and a pair of Orcish slaves bursting through the front door to finish the job. Following the battle, Jeggs debated and fought furiously to keep his promise, which was eventually allowed. The Nobleman was so moved that he even paid for a healer to remove the brands from those that so chose. Jeggs did not attend that, though. He left his brand intact, and instead went into court to demand a writ of freedom for his compatriots. After all this, there was a group of the slaves that refused to leave him. He became the Captain to them.
"Well, I suppose a new chapter is due to begin." He puts away the invitation and whistles happily as he strolls away from the unfortunate highwaymen who thought to take advantage of him. Someone will find the bodies eventually.

Anyone trained in reading people (Sense Motive) could notice Jeggs' interest at the word "Heroes". He pulls what seems to be a butterfly knife from his pocket and begins flicking it about in a quick pattern. Upon closer inspection, one would notice that it is actually a clever preening comb in his hand. Was I frisked? I'll gladly attempt a bluff or sleight of hand if I need to in order to have a real knife or two hidden on my person.

crap. I messed up because Swashbuckler finesse is different from regular finesse. I may wanna change it up anyway, but I may just retcon a different weapon in there because apparently you can't finesse Sawtooth sabres.

"Well it seems I'm fashionably late!" Through the doors of the great hall walk a tall, well groomed Tengu pulling a hood from his head. His charcoal feathers are accented with white around the neck and crown of the head. Anyone combat trained could notice that he keeps an open posture more suited for offense than protection and has two empty scabbards on his back. "Some call me Captain. My friends call me Jeggs. Anyone care to fill me in on what I've missed?"

Ok it'll be late tonight when I'm done. I am still on the fence but I'm leaning toward an Assassin's Creed type Mantis Zealot Warpriest of Geras. The Swashbuckler would still run the same flavor but with less religious tones. Does that seem acceptable slash do any of you have a preference?

"Yeesh. Those birds give me the heebidie jeebidies on a normal day, This is just downright unnerving..." Jeggs walks into the room, closing the door behind him. With a nod from his Captain, he opens a small cupboard and produces a bottle of cognac, from which he pours a glass for himself, Tikkle, and anyone else who wants it. They have every other character from Serpents Skull as an Avatar but not the Tengu I wanted for him... Ah well... |
