As far as I know, there is only one issue for a small mount on a large (or larger) mount. That is their ability to fast mount/dismount. If your mount is one size category larger than you can mount or dismount as a free action, with a ride check. If e mount is too big, you always need a move action to mount or dismount.

My level 9 Bard loves his wand of Magic Missle (CL 7 I think I don't have his sheet handy at the moment). Generally, he won't out damage the party's Fighter or Druid, but he can use the wand while singing and dancing. Sometimes massive piles of damage are not the responsibility of the wizard (or bard) or the wizard does not want blow throuAndals his best spells and the relatively small, but reliable, damage from Magic Missile is just bonus.

Of course a magic Missile is situational. All spells are situational.

Wizard:"We need to get out of this deep hole, what spell should I use? Magic Missile!"
GM: No effect
Wizard: "Fireball! That is my go-to spell"
GM: Still no effect
Wizard: "ooo I know. Haste! That spell is perhaps the most useful spell available"
GM: ugh

But what if his heart screams: Bard. It sounds like a coming of age movie to me.

You don't understand me! I don't want YOU'RE life!

Battling zombies on a balcony overlooking a room with evil clerics. When they die the zombies explode leaving a large slick patch of viscera on the ground. The party figured it would be easiest to push the zombies over the balcony and rain fireballs down on the clerics. The enlarged raging barbarian bull rushes 4 zombies in as many rounds, splattering them on the floor below. The rogue then pronounced:

"You are the Jackson Pollock of throwing guys off a balcony"

I am currently playing a Treesinger in a game. I had intended him to be a fairly Melee based character, but other factors have changed. Anyway I thought it would be a good idea to make him a grappler. Given that so many of the plant monsters have grab and contact poisons, I thought getting Greater Grapple as soon as possible would be my best bet. My Treesinger has a high strength, but with Weapon Finesse and agile maneuvers a high dexterity build would be about as good.
