Background:

Jasmine was a 'gutter rat' as the nobles called those like her. Her father left when she was a baby. Her mother did whatever it took to put food in her mouth, even if at the expense of her own well being. She was often in fights as a child, for everything from having food or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

From a young age she learned that survival was all that mattered. She learned how to steal, but she wasn't a petty thief. She only took what she needed, whether it be a loaf of bread, or a tattered pair of clothes to keep herself from the harsh elements.
