About Jaerig
The Ruszka family has long been adjacent to military greatness. In 4405 AR Darcuss ut Ruszka was selected by Field Marshall Korvosa to join his upcoming conquest across Varisia. Darcuss was a member of Korvosa’s vanguard served closely in the many assaults against the Shoanti tribesmen.
Upon the establishment of Fort Korvosa, Darcuss was contracted by Sergeant Waydon Endrin to establish a marshal training program for the steady income of Chelish recruits to the new outpost that would become the Korvosan Guard. Sadly, for his surviving family, Darcuss perished in the Great Fire of 4429. His eldest son perished as well, but the younger Jaed ut Ruszka was among the company of Guard that survived the destruction, and helped in fending off the assault until the Chelish warships arrived to drive the Shoanti back.
During the Cousin’s war Biros ut Ruszka was serving member of the House Endrin Garrison and helped control the mobs sent by Lord Vaimo into the region. His heroics during the battle led to him receiving an accommodation and monetary awards that set his family off well during the rise of Korvosa. The Ruszka family continued serving as ranking members of the Korvosan Guard through to the Chelish civil war.
During the civil war, Draevin Ruszka served as much of his ancestry did, maintaining a semblance of order for the Korvosan Guard. However, as the civil war came to an end; Draevin was uneasy about the Chelish pacts made between House Thrune and Asmodeus and retired from the Guard, setting up the Ruszka Military Consulting Firm. This business served as a mercenary recruiter for high ranking noble houses in Korvosa, using the Ruszka family history to vet quality soldiers willing to work as escorts and guards for a nice sum.
One of Draevin’s younger grandchildren, Barrick Ruszka, used his family wealth to move to Absalom in an attempt to set up an annex of the family business, but lacked his grandfather’s economical savvy and went bankrupt shortly upon arrival, underestimating the size of the grand metropolis he found himself in.
Broke and desperate, Barrick began working for himself as a bodyguard, eventually setting up a family in the Westgate district. His son, Rakiv, however fell into nefarious workings with the Sczarni crime family and left his father to work as an enforcer in the Dock districts of Absalom.
Rakiv lived a short and violent life, but not before his own son Jaerig was born. Jaerig’s grandfather begrudgingly took in his grandchild but raised him hard to ensure he didn’t fall into the same misdeeds as his father.
At an early age he used his past connections to get Jaerig enrolled in the Absalom city guard. The guard was a good fit, for even at a young age Jaerig displayed a strong single mindedness that was reflected in his physique. The harsh hand of his grandfather strengthened Jaerig’s need to see a job done efficiently but also instilled a short fuse for those unable to “cut through the problem.” A philosophy that oft caused what many would consider cruelty while Jaerig enforced city law upon citizen’s he thought were doing wrong. Jaerig only saw it as efficient punishment; after all he had served many dungeon tours and saw how rowdy criminals were when they didn’t arrive with the right attitude.
During a small uproar in the Dock’s (what was later discovered to be an attempt by the Sczarni to steal a dangerous artifact) Jaerig saved a Chelish ambassador headed for the Grand Lodge to deliver a parcel to the archives. With the attack thwarted, Jaerig accompanied the ambassador the rest of the way. From that point Jaerig was often contacted by the Chelish Pathfinder when he needed to ensure his safety on the road. It was shortly after his first visit to the archive, accompanying the Chelish member, Jaerig himself joined the Pathfinders.
