About Jack the Tracker

Short Background:

Orphaned at a very young age, jack grows up in the temple. He befriends a city watch captain and begins to learn sword play. It becomes clear to the clerics and Jack that he is not meant for temple life. Jack roams for 5 years learning of the world and improving his combat skills. When he finally returns, he has a mysterious nighttime meeting with a woman he later suspects to be Iomedae. She tells jack that evil needs to be rooted out by any means necessary. Jack, with the aid of the church, puts his skills to use fighting evil in the city. Those criminals who escape the City Watch now have somehting to fear, now that Jack the Tracker is here. It is a constant battle for Jack, as he can not walk full in the light, but must not stray too far into darkness, least his soul be corrupted.

Long Background:

Jack is a temple orphan. He was found by city guards about 20 years ago and brought to the temple of Iomedae. The priests agreed to care for and raise the child. From very early on, Jack learned of Iomedae. He learned the prayers, festivals, and philosophy of the god. the life of a cleric seemed a natural course for him, but it was not to be. Jack needed excitement, needed more freedom, and being an orphan was a constant reminder of the cruel world outside the temple. Jack visited the city watch garrison often in his younger years, always hoping that his parents murderer had been discovered. As the years past it became evident that he would not get the answers he sought but he continued to visit the garrison. He liked to listen to the stories the watchmen told of their patrols, daring thieves caught in the act, harrowing chases across the rooftops. His first sword was borrowed from a watch captain who taught him how to defend himself, Jack took to the sword well, using his speed to great advantage. He also favored the crossbow, even winning a competition one year. As he began to learn more of the outside world, the confines of the church grew tighter. The church was not exactly please with his new hobbies seeing the boy, now a young man torn between two worlds. One night jack received a summons to the head abbot's chambers. When Jack arrived, the abbot was starring out the office window. For long moments no one spoke, then with a heavy sigh, the Abbot turned to jack. "I know your calling is not that of a cleric. It has been know to me for sometime now. The natural next step would be the life of a Paladin, a Holy knight smiting evil in the name of the church. But I have seen into your heart, and you are meant to walk a darker path. And though I do not doubt your faith, I can feel the division in your soul. You will be leaving us, for a time. There are things that can not be taught here, as you have already discovered, learn these things but keep Iomedae in your thoughts and prayers. One day you will return, and on that day you will be at peace with yourself" Then the abbot turned and walk out of the room. Jack was stunned, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the note he had intended to leave on his cot, for the clerics to find the next morning. It explained he was leaving, to see the world and learn. It thanked them for all they had done and promised he would return someday. He tore the note up, left to grab his pack, and quietly slipped out the temple. over the next 5 years Jack learned much, his fighting skills improved, he learned how to survive on the streets and in the wild. After his last job, collecting a bounty on the head of a small time thieves gang, Jack had no offers and found his feet leading him back to the temple. It was dark when he arrived, and not wishing to awaken anyone, Jack climbed to the temple roof and under a star filled sky stared out over the city. He was lost in memories long forgotten when he heard a noise behind him. turning and drawing his blade, he saw a beautiful dark haired woman dressed in full plate. "Who are you and what are you doing trespassing here" demanded jack. The woman laughed in a rich and powerful voice. "Stay thy hand young warrior, no evil will set foot in this temple tonight." then looking out over the city, she says "So many people, living and working together, trusting in each other for their survival and welfare. Yet their are wolves that stalk the night, dressed as innocent lambs, they threaten Honorable and Righteous" then starring into jack's eyes she asks "What would you do if the goddess charged you to hunt down those who would be the enemies of justice" "I doubt the goddess takes much notice in me, especially these last 5 years" said Jack "I have not adhered to her doctrine as well as the clerics who sleep below" "That is not an answer" responded the lady knight. Jack sighed and looked out over the city. "I would find those who mean evil and I would bring them to Justice" "Even if it means breaking the laws of the city?" asked the woman. "Yes" said jack "but whatever means is necessary to ensure good people are once again safe" The woman placed her hand upon jack's shoulder. "Then do so with the blessing of the goddess and may her enemies, your enemies know fear" and with that statement she turned and briskly walked away. Jack was speechless for a moment and hurried after her. As he rounded the bell tower he froze. The woman had vanished without a trace. Where did she go, and who was she, he wondered. She almost looked like a drawing he once saw in a holy text of Iomedae before she reached godhood. He laughed, like the goddess would visit him. Even though he was in one of her temples, and he had never stopped praying to her each day? The next morning he asked to see the Abbot and was told he was expected. When he entered the room, the Abbot smiled. "You left her a boy divided and have returned a man whole. I hope you enjoyed your visit with the divine, for it is a rare gift. jack didn't know what to say, it seemed he was not meant to say anything, he did manage a slight nod. "good said the Abbot and now to work. While you were gone, this city has grown and so has the evil within it. perhaps you could sue your skills to find those criminals that fall through the crack of the system. I'm sure your old friends the city watch could use a hand. As for helping hands, you'll need this" as the abbot handed him a holy symbol. "With this you will be able to call on the Iomedae for assistance in your duty." They talked for hours and when Jack left, he did indeed feel whole, he had a purpose and he was home. He never did figure out how the Abbot new so much, now or 5 years ago.
