About Jack Mister

Background
For as long as there was time the Tribe had lived in the mountains. They hunted the peaks, and the forests near the peaks.

Then Hawcroft came to the tribe. They offered the tribe gifts for wood - steel for wood! The Tribe still hunted, but now they also harvested the trees.

Then Mister Boss came. Humans had always come. Some sought the tribe. Some were taken as captives. Mister Boss came to tell the Tribe how to Harvest.

Mister Boss was rich. He had steel, and booze, and treats. He had men to back him in a fight, and a potion that made him a great fighter. Soon Mister Boss had Tribe Wives. Soon he had Children in the Tribe.

Mister Boss was killed in a logging accident. His children forced to grow up without him - not unusual.

Jack was named by Boos. He is Jack, son of Mister; or Jack Mister.

Jack and his siblings grew slow, but Jack was the youngest. Smart, but always he was pushed around. Forced to fight for acceptance.

Jack's mother apprenticed him to the Shaman. The Shaman knew many things from long ago, and some bought from Hawcroft. He taught much to Jack, but also used him as a guinea pig. Jack hurt, but it made him stronger. He taught Jack to carve the symbols in his flesh that channeled the Favor of the Gods. When everyone got sick, Jack didn't. When he nearly fell off the ledge when it collapsed a vine caught him.

The Shaman taught Jack that while his body might be weak, it could be improved.

Jack had learned some Herbalism/Alchemy from the Shaman, and the Shaman had a book from his father. Jack and the Shaman studied it, experimenting, and over time Jack learned how to be stronger, bigger. Jack got respect.

Respect was like a drug.

Jack cut more trees than anyone, and he asked for more ways to become stronger from Hawcroft. Eventually he had enough trading that he went down into the human world.

He was there for a year. He found a place to help him experiment on himself. It worked. It took almost everything he had, but they made him bigger

Jack worked for Hawcroft now. He solved problems. He cut trees. He carried more than anyone else could. He carried too much. His legs were four times as strong, but his weight was eight times as much. Knees siezed. Tendons broke. Bones cracked. Not all at once, just gradually. His potions could hold the pain at bay. Fix some symptoms. But it kept getting worse.

He went down into the world to seek a cure. Doctors told him only amputation could help. He performed surgery himself. Operation after operation on his legs. They never stayed fixed. Always got worse. Got infected. He had to start cutting bits out. And as his leg vanished so did his funds.

Staying at the hospital made sense at the start. Good place to stay while he fixed himself.

Last month he finally took off his right leg at the hip. The left leg ends just above the knee - and a shattered bone shard suggests it won't for long.

There are ways to fix him, but he cannot do it, cannot afford others to do it. He is helpless now. A legless giant freak in a hospital of humans.

A chance to be whole? He would kill for it.

Personality
Jack is desperate for approval. His self-esteem was destroyed as a child and now he desperately tries to change himself into someone admired.

Jack doesn't really care about physical pain - his own or others.

Jack is smart - a genius in an orc tribe - but has discovered that humans can accept giants if those giants are gentle and stupid. He plays stupid by default now. Don't underestimate him, though. He might swing an axe at you but he has a surgeon's knowledge, and knows exactly how you are put together - and the best way to take you apart.

Insult Jack and he will remember.
