"Miss Marion is quite right," Isaiah intones, stoking his beard slowly as he contemplates the darkness outside the windows, "panic is highly unlikely to help." "Hmm," he muses further, "there are several plausible explanations to this most mysterious of events. I suspect that some form of magical darkness would be capable of causing such an effect." "Would you mind awfully, checking if there is an arcane aura present outside?" He asks, looking to Elora.

"My cousin also joined with you those many years ago in bringing that vile murderer to justice, sadly he is entangled in pressing concerns in Taldor. Fortunately, I was already planning to visit this fine city when he received the invitation, so I felt it only right that I stand in for him on this occasion."

"There does seem little point to remaining here," Isaiah sighs, raising to his feet and smoothing down his expensive clothes. "We appear to be the only ones here, does anyone know who sent our invitations? I would like to know who it is who so rudely treats their guests."

Halor al'Shiman wrote: Really? Interesting. I thought it was possible to finagle it into still being 0-level. nope, the sense magic word needs to be combined with a cone target word, the lowest level of which is the 10' cone at 1st level. So while the effect word is 0 level, the spell would be at least 1st.

"No doubt some local tradition," Isaiah speaks reassuringly, still not allowing his apprehension over the missing time to show through his haughty demeanor, "quite rude of the organisers not to inform us of the custom before beginning, but I am sure it was merely an oversight rather than an intentional deception." Halor al'Shiman wrote: casting Detect Magic I'm jealous! Words of Power mean the detect magic is a 1st level spell at least (for a 10' cone).

Urg, Isaiah thinks to himself groggily, shaking himself from his reverie, what was in those drinks last night? Looking around at the others within the juror's box, the thick bearded man gives a gruff cough to cover his discomfort over the troubling dream, and watches their faces for signs they noticed him napping. At the words of Elora and Halor, though, he quickly regains his confident mask, "Why, I am none other than Sir Isaiah Ferstwaine, my dear girl, and we are here to celebrate the anniversary of a great victory of the fine upstanding citizens of Absolom against the vile depravities of those who would bring them harm; ten years ago, a terrible villain was brought to justice in this very room," he peers around the dimly lit chamber as he pauses, "though I daresay the proceedings have yet to begin."

I've not played the module either. Isiaih's background: Sir Isaiah Ferstwaine, eldest son of the Lord Ferstwaine, has been groomed since birth to take his fathers place as head of the family, though the old man’s continued vigour into his late years suggests that honour will not come for some time. Much of Isaiah’s routine obligations involve projecting a strong public face for the family, despite its declining fortunes and ever diminishing holdings, this mainly rotates around the extravagantly over-complicated social posturing of Oppara, but occasionally calls for the scion to travel beyond the Gilded City to the families former spheres of influence.
Ten years ago, the Ferstwaine family maintained a permanent presence in Absolom, to better influence the politics of the City at the Centre of the World. The accommodations required to properly house family representatives is expensive, though, and over the last decade it has become unfeasible to support them further. As a result, on the anniversary of a highly public trial when a low-ranking cousin was asked to reprise his role as juror, there was no-one present in the city to represent the family. Rather than risk the embarrassment of declining to take part in the event, and unwilling to pay for such a minor member of the family to travel across the Inner Sea, the heir to house Ferstwaine was sent on the next ship bound for Absolom…
I've been holding back on developing Isaiah's background until we know a little more about how the game is going to start. Beyond the idea he is a member of house Ferstwaine of Taldor, and is traveling the 'lesser nations' in order to document their 'quaint customs'. As far as interlinking our histories, Halor mentions being a noble bastard, perhaps our characters could be half-brothers? |
