Background:
Illian was born in the city of Veldraine to Illyrius and Oneia Tyrus, both shipwrights in that city. Illian was always an obedient child, if quiet, and started training as a shipwright at the age of Illian. Illian was talented enough at woodcrafting, but showed little interest in designing ships, much preferring the intricacies of the weaponry carried by them, and the joys of sailing to landbound work. Worried about his future, his parents signed him to the Chelish frigate Dark Chain shortly after he turned twelve, where he served as the chief gunner’s assistant and apprentice. Developing a knack for working with ballistae, Illian eventually became an assistant crew chief for one of them—the net step toward a promising naval career.

This was not to be. After eight years serving on the Dark Chain, the crew decided to go rogue, killing the captain and sailing to try and join Arronax Endymion’s small fleet in Hell Harbor. Fearing that the Dark Chain was filled with spies, Endymion sank it. Illian and a handful of others managed to swim to shore. The group stayed together for a short time, afraid that an attempt to return to Cheliax would be met with mutiny charges, but eventually drifted apart to different corners of the Shackles.

In the decade or so since, Illian has drifted from ship to ship, working to make a living on whatever ship he can. Illian loves nothing more than being on a ship at sea, studying the texts he can acquire on mathematics and structural design, and taking care of his current ship’s weaponry. His time as a pirate has also given him some facility with weaponry and turned him into a passable sailor.

Illian is currently in between ships, taking some time at the Formidably Maid to try and find a new berth. While he knows a fair number of people scattered throughout the Shackles, his luck has been poor recently and his prospects are few.

Questions:
1.What set of circumstances found you in Port Peril at a tavern having a lively drink anyway?
Illian has been trying to find a new berth for a few weeks now with little luck. The Formidably Maid is as good a place as any to try and find out who's in need of a gunner.
2.Are you the type who struggles against his chains as they are being put on or waits for an opportune moment to murder the jailer?
"Hrrm. I suppose that I am more likely to wait. In time, I can either break free or find some way to prove my worth. Acting rashly gains me nothing."

3.How do you see your character developing mechanically? Storywise?
Mechanically, I will advance him as a pure fighter, increasing his current skills and possibly picking up a few odd points in other utility skills (like Craft(Carpentry) and perhaps Craft(Sails)). Featwise, Illian will be focused on two-handed weapons (although the exact feats will vary based on party composition), and I'll pick up further siege weapon feats (Siege Engineer, Master Siege Engineer, and Siege Gunner) as possible.

Storywise, I plan on having him stay a fairly quiet, but competent, member of the crew--ideally moving up to chief gunner (or appropriate title for such). He'll probably be more comfortable with the ship's weapons than with other crew members, and is likely to start nicknaming them.

4.Be ye a dirty scoundrel who would sell his mothers soul fer a farthing and a pint o' rum or be ye some heroic type who be thinking himself better 'n 'is fellow black hearted bastard?
"I am neither. I do what is necessary to live, and to increase my own knowledge and skill. Such work is it's own reward--now stop leaning on Vera before I give you a personal demonstration of what she can do."

5.THAR BE VOIKINGS OFF THE STARBOARD BOWWW!!! What do you do?
Move to the nearest starboard siege engine. Check it quickly for any potentially hazardous warping or other, and the load it or lead a crew in loading it, as the case may be. Pick a target, aim, and wait for further orders before firing. Once the ships are grappled, Illian will draw his weapon and join the melee.
