Located in the foothills of the Five Kings Mountains in eastern Isger, Breachill is a thriving town of about 1,300 inhabitants; most are humans, although there are notable populations of dwarves, half-elves, and gnomes here as well. The town predates its most notable landmark, which sits about 1 mile to the northeast, high on low-rising Hellknight Hill: Citadel Altaerein, the foreboding but now-abandoned fortress that was once the home of the Hellknight Order of the Nail.

In years past, Breachill gladly served as a supply source for the Hellknights, who commended the well-ordered peace the town enjoyed. But 8 years ago, when the Order of the Nail fully retreated from Citadel Altaerein in favor of the order’s new home in Varisia, Breachill’s inhabitants simply shrugged, continuing the agriculture, crafting, and bartering that has always sustained them. Now, common wisdom generally recommends avoiding the citadel, which serves as an isolated haven for peaceful groups that don’t want to be disturbed but is also rumored to be overrun with dangerous monsters.

You have all arrived in the town of Breachill, eager to participate in the town's monthly "Call For Heroes," a formal meeting aimed at helping the local populace tackle problems that fall outside the responsibilities or capabilities of the town guard, and help provide a launch for burgeoning adventurers.

The meeting is scheduled to start soon, but you've gathered in the Wizards Grace, a popular nearby tavern, before the proceedings begin. The room is full of local town folk, chatting, eating and mingling cheerfully. Today, the tavern is particularly full. As is tradition, there are numerous toasts to adventurers and residents alike, and a hearty meal of boar stew with lentils is being served - a practice owner Trinil Uskwold highly encourages, as her grandfather, himself a prominent local adventurer, loved eating that meal before embarking on his own many daring journeys.

Please introduce your character here - but don't do any skill checks yet. Just start stretching your roleplaying legs for now. The story begins!

Hello, and welcome to the game! All out of character conversation will take place in this thread.

Before we get started, I'd like to share a few thoughts to lay the groundwork for the story we're about to tell.

1. I'm learning just like you are. I will get some things wrong, and while I don't want to presume too much, I'll bet you all will, too. That's totally fine and expected. Let's all learn this system together in a spirit of fun and camaraderie.
2. I haven't done PbP before, but I've been reading some examples from other games. It seems like combat can get tedious and really slow things up. If you guys have any tips from other games you've played in, I'm open to ideas to help streamline this part of the game. That said, I don't want to mess with the mechanics or rules too much, since part of the reason for doing this game is to learn the new system.
3. I think I'll be using Roll20 for maps and combat. Please let me know if you have any issues accessing that site.
4. I haven't pored over the character creation rules yet. I've approached the game from the perspective of a GM, so I've only read through those sections. I won't be much help with complex character creation/build questions, so hopefully you can help each other out a bit there.
5. I'd like to have some "clean" character stat blocks, but I haven't found any yet. Have you guys seen any?

I'm excited to get started with you guys! Please post below and introduce yourself. We'll finalize character creation and then get into gameplay as soon as possible!

Now, let's tell a story!

Hello, Paizo boards! ICT GM here. I'm new to the Paizo boards and excited to connect with this community. I’ve spent most of my gaming life in the real world, but life, time, and adult schedules have made it remarkably difficult to find time to play. One of my players recommended that I check out the Paizo boards when I was unable to convene a group for a new 2E campaign. So here I be.

But enough about me. On to the gaming.

Recruitment Details
The game up for recruitment is the brand new AP Age of Ashes. I'm sure most players here are familiar with it, but just in case you're not, you can download the Player's Guide here (you’re going to need it anyway - so go ahead and click that link!).

I'm looking for 5 players - maybe 6.

Application
To apply, please complete the (hopefully minimal) steps below.

0. Download and read the Player's Guide.
1. Develop a character concept using the criteria/questions below.
2. Share a brief writing example. This could be your character's backstory, an example from another game you're in or an excerpt from an old term paper (please don't). Just let me see an example of your style.

Character Concept:

I don't really want people to spend time building a full character (unless you want to!), so I'm just asking for a general concept. I've posted the character creation guidelines just so you know what you're signing up for, but don't feel pressured to go through all the rigamarole of creating a complete character until you're selected.

As for your background, put as much or as little effort into fleshing that out as you want. I prefer characters with deep backgrounds, but also understand the effort associated with building something creative/interesting. If you have one you'd like to share, great! If not, no worries.

1. Pick a Class.

2. Why does your character want to be an adventurer?

3. What will your character contribute to the party in and out of battle?

Character Creation Guidelines:

NOTE: You do NOT have to go through all the steps of creating a character before being selected. I just wanted to lay the ground work so people knew what to expect. And I stole borrowed from another recruitment thread, and wanted to keep this section.
We’ll be doing the standard method as outlined in the Core Rulebook - ABC, adding ability scores as you go. While it’s not a requirement, the backgrounds in the player’s guide do create a nice foundation for why you’d care about any of the things. If they don’t work mechanically or thematically for you, we’ll figure out a way to make something else work.

Recruitment will run until Friday, August 16 or until we have enough applicants to flesh out the party.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to the applications!
