The cursed-black tiger resumed his true dwarven form after a short while, eager to feels his own skin and bones once again. He still didn't understand the nature of what had occurred to him, though he felt it lingering in his blood. He walked in silence alongside his fellow soldiers during the return to camp, contemplative of his new druidic powers and how this curse may impact him. -------- Seeing some of the starved elves now in the war camp evoked both relief and sadness in Hedgerow. He was certainly glad to see they wouldn't starve for a hopeless pursuit of rigid loyalty to their home turf, but he was saddened to see that it came to this at all. People should be free to make whatever decisions they wanted, in pursuit of their own health and happiness. Whoever...or whatever burned the forest was responsible for much hurt, and Hedgerow meant to make them pay, given the chance. Not feeling very festive, he declined to join the musicians with his drumming. He went to bed early, ready to put this troubling day behind him.

Hedgerow was going to have to get used to this soldier camp life. He struggled to set up his tent, as he was not used to the task, being more than comfortable sleeping in the branches of a tree or under the stars. He saw a few others around him struggle as well which made him feel a little less self-conscious. One such soldier was another dwarf, though not one of the 'hill' variety like himself. It was a mountain dwarf, one who apparently also wielded magic and was not afraid to display it openly. He would have to keep his eye on that one, especially since their peoples had a history of bad blood. He hoped she was an odd-one out like he was; Hedgerow held only a few dwarven traditions and fewer still of their prejudices. After pitching his tent to relative satisfaction (his lines still weren't taut...) he began looking around to make some observations. Thus far it seemed that this motley assortment of knuckleheads should be entertaining if nothing else. For now, he figured it would be best if he made some sort of acquaintances. He pulled out his simple hide drum and began to play a slow but steady rhythm, one that would help focus his mind and maybe even draw the attentions of a new friend. He played as he walked, heading in the direction of the human Chase who had played the lyre a few minutes ago. Without stopping his deep-toned thrumming tempo, he said To Chase:

Hedgerow is a dwarf often shunned by other dwarves due to his intrinsic druidic talent and lifestyle. He has learned that cities of goodly (and evil) folk serve their purpose in the grand scheme of existence and that it is in his best interest to learn to interact with civilization as well as he can with nature. He has a hatred of tyranny and "might makes right", mostly because of the murderous giants that killed his father and clan members, and so has devoted his life to helping battle any force that threatens the simple tranquility of neutrality. In wartime conflict he picks the side that battles the greater threat to these principles. --------- I have the 5e PHB, DMG, and MM but I haven't thoroughly read the DMG so I am not all that familiar with the variant rules you refer to. At this point I don't have much of an opinion to offer on that front. As a player I'd love to see some moral quandaries, gritty war torn villages/scenes to interact with NPCs, interesting factions that play roles in the background but that may affect our decisions, good player-to-player cooperation, good narrative writing, and a healthy regular posting desire from everyone.
Here is Zedth's submission: Hedgerow, hill dwarf druid, outlander.
Story:
The dwarf now known as Hedgerow was once known by a different name, though it has been lost to time and likely will not be remembered. The young lad was part of a merchant clan of hill dwarves that made good coin by spearheading trade opportunities between the peoples of Geoff and Ulek, and the many villages between. The young dwarf remembers little of his father, save his fierce devotion to the dwarven god of battle - Clangeddin. On a fateful day the father's caravan was traveling through the great Dim Forest when they were assaulted by a raiding party of giants. The hill dwarf clan caravaneers were not prepared for such an onslaught and were no match for the invaders. Shoving the young dwarf into the woods, his father shooed him to safety with a few hasty parting words, then returned to the clan to buy his son adequate time to disappear into the forest. The dwarf child ran into the wood with tears streaming down his face, unsure of his father's fate, unsure of where he would go, unsure even of his next meal. The child traveled all day, finally succumbing to sleep in the nook of a sturdy tree branch. The following lonely day turned into days and the days revealed nothing but unending trees. His rumbling stomach combined with his fierce determination to survive (so that his father had not perished in vain) led him to an inner strength that he never knew existed. There was something about the woods that sparked an inner fire -- a fire that quite literally manifested as flames that erupted from his palm. Not comprehending the 'how', the young dwarf intuitively pointed the flames at a coney hiding under a hedge. FOOM! He stood wide-eyed for a moment, staring in disbelief. Not only had he conjured flame from nothingness, but he had sent the flame flying toward an agile target! The inviting savory smell of roast rabbit snapped him out of his moment of clarity, and he dove to the forest floor, thrusting the burned coney into his starving mouth. A few short minutes later he stood up to regain his bearings but was taken aback as he met the gaze of a sylvan elf bowman who stood a mere ten feet from where he had feasted upon his kill. The elf spoke to him in the common tongue of men.
--------------- He and the elf spent the next several years together. After going back to the boy's father's caravan and finding nothing but burned wreckage and death, Yistlian and the child decided the child's future was uncertain. The elf took the dwarf boy in, adopted him as his own, and taught him the ways of the woods. Yistlian had witnessed the druidic magic used by the boy and knew it was a unique and special opportunity to influence a youth in a profoundly positive way. The elf was an avid ranger but did his best to instruct the child on how to survive in the wild and how to find his center. Yistlian was confident that further druidic power would manifest in time - and he was right. Named for the place where they first met, the elf began addressing the boy as "Hedgerow", gifting him with a new name to go along with his new life. ---------- Many years went by and eventually Hedgerow went off on his own, though he never forgot his beloved mentor and adopted elven father. Having heard about increased giant activity and other clashing armies in the region, Hedgerow felt an inner fire burning pushing him in a desire to help. He made contact with a scout group led by a half-elf name Vex, hailing from the nearby city of Hochoch. He made a friendship with several scouts, aiding them with information, tracking, and recent intelligence regarding the movements of giant warriors. It wasn't long before he himself joined the ranks of these soldiers, using his magic and warhammer in a fierce determination to end the forces of tyranny.

How wide apart are the bars on the cages? I'm thinking about shapeshifting into a smaller animal such as a house cat but I would prefer to pick something with a little tactical value (such as a boar, for example.) Would there be room for a boar to squeeze through the bars?
