The ride has been pleasant, thus far, with Maegar Varn and his Host offering good company. Hazel returns Iozif's flirtations, giving him a smile where appropriate and even allowing herself to blush every now and again at his words. She is, of course, not really serious about the man. But she knows how to play politics, and if she can convince him that she has some interest, she may be able to leverage that in the future. Of course, Iozif will be looking to do the same as Ilya pointed out. During the ride, Hazel attempts to engage Maegar Varn and Sidonie in polite conversation. While not actively seeking to find dirt on them, Hazel does note anything that may be useful in her future dealings with them, such as their interests, family history, and especially their ambitions. To Sidonie specifically, she asks, "So, you are from the Gronzi Forest? I have never been there myself, but I understand that it is a rather beautiful forest, despite being quite dark." Hazel would like to get to know Höd and Taewyn better as well, having not had much time to speak to them as of yet, given her attempt to know the Varnling Host better. However, she decides that it would be best to engage them in conversation after they have parted ways with the Host. After all, the last thing she wants to do learn some important information about her companions only to have someone overhear it. ![]()

![]() Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Would Hazel have any idea where Nivakta's Crossing is? Unfortunately she is not trained in Geography. Having no idea where Nivakta's Crossing is, though presuming it is on the way to the Greenbelt, Hazel nods her head to Maegar Varn. "Why yes, it would be nice to travel with you and your Host. It will be wonderful to keep your company for some time." ![]()

![]() Hazel smiles at Illya, not saying anything about her use of "milady." After all, she is only doing what is proper in a setting such as this. There will be plenty of time on the road for those around her to get used to the idea of treating her as one of their own. She also smiles at the Ulfen. "Yes, we will have plenty of time on the road, I should think." When the bell tolls, Hazel follows Antonin into the hall. ![]()

![]() "Tjenerinne?" The word is uncomfortable for Hazel to speak. She is fluent in many languages, but Skald is not one of them. "Oh! You must mean Illya. You will have to teach me some of the Skald language, Höd. It is a beautiful, yet oddly underrated language, I believe." Hazel introduces Höd to Illya. She then turns to the other man standing nearby in order to include him in the conversation. "And you must be our scout..." Once again, she implies that she is asking for his name. If it appears he hasn't been listening in, she will introduce herself as Hazel, and the rest of the group by their first names, even though that is not necessarily the proper thing to do. ![]()

![]() Early morning: Concentration (Night): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Hazel wakes up suddenly, her dreams instilling a strong mix of emotions within her. Why do I feel so ashamed? And angry? She doesn't remember her dream, but she does remember how she felt, and it wasn't good. Before she gets up to get ready, Hazel finds her Harrow Deck and shuffles it quickly, pulling the top card when she is done. Harrow Card:
Suit: 1d6 ⇒ 2 (Dexterity)
Alignment: 1d9 ⇒ 5 Neutral The Peacock:
The Peacock, huh? Well, that doesn't tell me anything about the dream, but it does sometimes signify a shift in attitude or societal change. That seems especially relevant today. Forgetting about her dream for now, Hazel prepares to receive her charter. -- Later: Sense Motive (Antonin): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
"Why thank you, Antonin. It is good to see you again." Hazel takes a look around, trying to see if she recognizes anyone. There appear to be four separate groups. There's the group right next to her own, consisting of six people, the leader of whom appears to be a pretty confident swordsman. There's another group a little larger and further out, all of whom are uniform in appearance. And then a very large group even further away. Our group is so small compared to those... Hazel is interrupted from her thoughts, when she is tapped on her shoulder. She turns to look, for the first time, at the rest of the group she has been paired with and is startled by the man's clouded eyes. Like a foggy night. Regaining her composure quickly, and hoping the man didn't notice, she responds, "Why, yes, I am. You must be the Ulfen man Antonin told me about. Ronoakson, was it? You may call me Hazel..." Hazel trails off, clearly asking for Ronoakson's first name. She also takes a look at the other man in the group, presumably the scout. Both men appear to be very capable. Even this Ulfen man, with his clouded eyes, seems to be strong despite his condition. Apparently ö is Alt-1428. I'll have to remember that! ![]()

![]() "I'll have to think on that plan. Perhaps you can help me? I believe the charter we will be receiving will have more details for us to work with." Hazel gladly shares her room with Illya, excited for the company. Some of the better PbP's on the forums here deal with roleplaying in a way I think we can utilize. When most people are ready to move on or things slow down, the DM just presses forward. Any roleplaying that hasn't finished can be done so in what's called "Flex Time." Basically, you just stick it in a spoiler that this occurred the day before, and then everything out of the spoiler is present time. Works pretty well. ![]()

![]() "We'll be receiving our charter tomorrow. I suppose I could use some help packing though." After they finish eating, Hazel will lead Illya up to her room, where she continues any conversation with her while packing up her stuff (mostly clothing). Ready to move on as well. ![]()

![]() Just a quick post here to give Illya (and everyone else) an idea of where I'd like to take my character: I see Hazel as a slightly naive though extremely confident character. She can be very proper when protocol states it, but does not care for the propriety that comes with her station. In fact, wherever possible, she snubs it and defies the "rules" that come with being a noble. You can see this with her discussion with Illya, that she would prefer a friend over someone waiting on her. Hazel is naive in that she tends to trust before asking some important questions. This isn't to say she's going to just take everyone at face value, but perhaps more than she should. In terms of character growth, she'll probably learn the hard way to not trust so openly. She'll also probably grow from a character that doesn't care to be leader, due to her disinterest in nobility, to someone who will lead out of necessity. When it comes to her relationship with the rest of the party members, I see Hazel as becoming close friends with everyone, but especially Illya (which could provide some interesting conflict down the road, since Hazel has a small problem with House Surtova at the moment). She could become romantically interested in Höd or Taewyn, if things lead that way. I'm guessing she'll end up being the Ruler, since she's the most capable in terms of backstory and stats, but wouldn't mind ruling alongside another if marriage is involved. ![]()

![]() "Let's just say I'd like to get away for a while. I find that life here is stifling and I am tired of the suitors. Yes, there are plenty of admirers, but they are all the same. They scheme and plot, and none of them are truly the gentleman I would look for." Hazel then listens intently to Illya's explanation of her own upbringing before speaking again. "Well, it is good to know that you will be capable of defending yourself. But I have to say, that you are quite wrong about your duty as a handmaiden. You have no obligation to obey me, nor must you always lend support to my endeavors. I would prefer you do so only because you agree with me. After all, if I am making some terrible mistake, I would hope that those around me are willing to question me. And I care not for your family's history. The Stolen Lands will be a place for us both to start fresh, yes?" Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 (Oblivious, this time!) When Illya asks about the men that have been hired, she continues the discussion gladly. "I am not organizing the expedition myself. In fact, the Swordlords and the Lord Mayor have formed the expedition party. I trust their word, but will of course keep a keen eye out for dishonesty. And if I am wrong... Well, we'll see what happens then." Obviously, Hazel might be a little too trusting! That's perhaps her worst character flaw. ![]()

![]() DM: I'm going to make some assumptions with how much I know about the Stolen Lands. If I overstep, let me know and we'll just retcon :) "Lady Illya, please sit down. And please call me Hazel." After Illya sits and speaks her mind, Hazel gladly continues the conversation. "To be truthful, I don't know too much myself. We are heading into the Greenbelt, which is just south of Restov. I do not know much about it, beyond its rolling hills and relatively large forest. I've heard rumors of bandits in the area, so we will of course have to be careful ou there. We'll be accompanied by two men, who I have not yet met. One of them is a scout, and the other an Ulfen. I believe the Ulfen is a guard of some sort." "As for me, I am the daughter of a noble of House Medvyed, but I would have you know that I have no intention of being the prissy, look-down-your-nose-at-others type. Propriety and decorum have their place, but I prefer to speak plainly and openly most of the time. I want you to feel you can do the same around me. I am no better than you, after all." Illya should get the feeling that Hazel truly believes what she is saying. "Let's see... I speak four languages fluently, not including Taldane (Common) and I have some experience in the arcane arts. I also have a passion for the Harrowing, and have found that I have a knack for that sort of thing." Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 "But enough about me. I'd like to know more about you." She lowers her voice considerably to be sure that no others can hear her. "Surely you are more than just a maid? After all, we are heading into the Stolen Lands, where there may be danger." I read the spoiler, I hope you don't mind. We got the same roll, so I'll just assume that Hazel knows you aren't letting something on, but no more than that. Hazel has only given you hints about what she can do, but hasn't been untruthful. ![]()

![]() Hazel nods to the Innkeeper. "Yes, please do have someone check in on her. Let her know I'll be waiting down here. And would you mind bringing me a bowl of fruits. I do believe I am craving some sweet at the moment.!" I wonder about these men who will be accompanying me, the woodsman (he is a scout) and the Ulfen (is he to be a guard then?). And I suppose the handmaiden is proper protocol, though I see no reason for one to accompany me. I hope she isn't too deferential. I would much rather have a friend with me than a servant. Hazel seats herself at a table, idly waiting for her bowl of fruit and for Illya to arrive. If either the Halfling or Issian woman catches her eyes, she simply smiles and nods in greeting, but does not approach them at the moment. ![]()

![]() Harrow Card rolls:
Suit: 1d6 ⇒ 4 (Int)
Alignment: 1d9 ⇒ 6 (CN) The Vision: +2 to one intelligence check for the day. "Why thank you, Antonin. I am eager to begin already! I suppose I shall return to my Inn to gather my things and meet with Illya. Please express my gratitude to the Lord Mayor for this opportunity." Hazel curtsies with grace as she leaves Antonin's office, keeping up with the decorum expected of a woman of her station, though she doesn't particularly care for that sort of thing. Hazel walks the streets of Restov back to her home, idly playing with the Harrow deck in one of her pouches. Realizing she has been fiddling with it, she stops and pulls it out fanning the cards for a moment before shuffling them. She draws the top card of the deck. The Vision, hm? The last time I drew this card I met an insane man who had more knowledge of the arcane arts than I had ever seen before. Too bad it was so difficult to bring it out of him through his madness. I wonder what happened to him? Hazel arrives at her Inn shortly after and immediately walks to the stables to check on her horse, Magnolia. Magnolia is a small horse, though strong enough to carry Hazel or some supplies. She is chocolate colored with beautiful white markings down her back. Hazel spends a moment petting Magnolia and feeding her a sugar cube before heading up to her room to start gathering some of her things together. She wasn't leaving just yet, but it was good to get a head start. Then she heads back to the common area to ask the Innkeeper where she can find Ilya. Not sure if I'm supposed to be the one who knocked or not. If not, I can wait until Ilya is caught up to meet me. ![]()

![]() @Taewyn: Of course I don't mind Taewyn! I stole the setup myself and adapted it a little. I like having everyone available, though I may need to use more spoilers to keep things shorter... Plus, I think this type of profile is useful for a DM as well, who may not know my abilities as well as I do. @Ilya: I am in the Central time zone, two hours ahead of you. @DM: Rolling perception, initiative, and such for us is fine by me. If it will keep things moving, I am all for it (especially for group rolls, such as while exploring). ![]()
Human Dreamspun Sorceror (Seeker) 1
![]() Hello everyone! I am back in action now and able to post. Hazel is a sorceress/Harrower, so she'll be primarily focused on casting spells and trying to stay out of combat. Her Harrowed feat allows her to gain a bonus to a random roll each day, based on what card she draws from the deck. She'll eventually multiclass into Harrower if allowed, though she is not your typically gypsy. She grew up as a noble, so she is more geared towards Diplomacy than deception. Though she is a noble, she fancies herself as a little bit of an explorer. She has gained some skill in disabling traps and such, though she has never done so for nonlawful reasons, and she has always rearmed the trap where possible. Hazel was written up as LG, but I think that I may change that to NG based on some of her abilities and personality traits. I see her as a young noble woman who has a rebellious streak, but is generally good and lawful at heart. Hazel would be a good fit for Ruler, though I see Hod would also be a good fit. I don't really see Hazel as being a good ruler on her own, though. We'll have to see how things play out I think. She could also be a good councillor and magister. DM: Hazel can perform Harrowings, which leads me to a question for you. With the PM system in place, I can make the rolls that symbolize drawing cards and then you can provide me with some clues or very generic foreshadowing if you wish in private. I'll be able to then add some fluff in the Gameplay forum. I have the Harrow Deck supplement, so I can provide you with the basic meanings of cards if you need it. I don't anticipate doing this for the party too often at these early levels. The Harrower class is meant to do it each day for the party, but at that point we would just roll up the cards for mechanics and not bother with the fluff each day, I think. Also, are you planning on using the Book of the River Nations update to the Kingmaker ruleset? It does a really good job of fixing some of the problems with the kingdom building rules without changing too terribly much. ![]()

![]() I am going to dot for interest right now. I have just recently applied for a Kingmaker game, so I may pull out depending on what happens with that one. I will probably be considering the same character I submitted with the other game (see the alias profile for details, including backstory). Note that she will have to be updated to fit your rules (reroll stats, drop the Seeker archetype, add a trait, doublecheck equipment, etc). I have been waiting to play a Kingmaker game for some time (I made it into one that only got as far as Oleg's a while back). I am extremely interested in the roleplaying of the council meetings. Hazel would probably aim for Ruler or Councillor as her primary role in the kingdom. She will only choose ruler if married (more roleplaying with another party member, likely). ![]()
![]() I would like to submit Hazel Medvyed for your consideration. Please see her profile for crunch and background/appearance. She was designed for a PbP Kingmaker game with 20 point buy, but was not selected. I don't believe anything needs to change, but if you notice something you don't like, let me know and I'll fix it. DMBleedsGreen wrote: Why you want to take your chances forging a new place for yourself in the 'Wilderness' of the Stolen Lands. This should also include your future goals, they don't have to be detailed but I do want an idea that you have them. This is detailed in the background section of her profile. In short, she is searching for answers. She wants to know why she has magical ability. She also wants to get away from the stifling atmosphere of being a noble, constantly being sought after by men who are far too boring for her tastes. DMBleedsGreen wrote: Who you know/who knows you. You didn't grow up in a vacuum, so give me an idea who cares (for good or ill) whether you live or die. I don't need stats on them, but I do want to know: their name, how they relate to you, how you relate to them & a general description of them. You should have at least one friend, one good friend, one acquaintance, some body who would like to see you fail and somebody who would like to see you dead. Yes, this means they need to be separate people. This is not currently detailed in the profile, so here are a couple of quick names. Kara Soltani: The Varisian who taught her more about her abilities and trained her in the art of Harrowing. Denalda: A servant assigned to Hazel, Denalda is her closest friend and confidante. Though it is a bit of a scandal that Hazel believes her best friend to be a servant, she cares little for the politics about the situation. Unfortunately, this has led to punishment for Denalda on more than one occasion, so Hazel has had to be more discreet with their relationship. Tarith Surtova: A noble from House Surtova who attempted to court Hazel to no avail. Tarith is still bitter about it to this day, though the rejection happened almost two years ago. Rumor has it that he may try something drastic to force Hazel's hand, though she doesn't fear him. ![]()
![]() This is Dukeruckley's character: Appearance and Personality:
Background:
When Hazel turned 15, she discovered that she was unique among the rest of her family. Her dreams appeared to be more real than everyone else's. Most of her friends and family thought she was looking into things too much, but Hazel was sure she was different. She turned to a traveling Varisian, who determined that Hazel was in fact Dreamspun. Her dreams were in fact more real than others, because there was truth in them. Often, Hazel's dreams were in fact visions of the past and future. The Varisian, a Harrower by trade, taught her to harness her abilities in order to divine the futures of others. Hazel has been practicing her ability to Harrow ever since she learned from the Varisian, who has since moved on. While she is not able to know for sure the future of those she performs a Harrowing on, often she is able to find clues. Unfortunately for her, Hazel's family doesn't exactly approve of her practice, wishing she would instead focus her efforts on diplomacy and accepting one of her many suitors as her husband. Instead, Hazel has decided to travel, in the hopes of learning more about her powers. She has prepared by learning how to channel her ability into useful spells, even going so far as to purchase equipment to leave. All she needs is an excuse and someone (or a group) to accompany her for safety. That is when she heard the Swordlords were searching for a group of people to clear the land to the south. Her dreams that night confirmed her suspicions. She must be part of that group! Character Crunch:
