Hanif is from Tephu on the River Sphinx. Named for the sea of reeds that grows in the shallow inundated marshlands where the Crook and Asp join together. Tephu has long supplied Osirion with much of its supply of papyrus. The city’s major industry is the harvest and processing of its one abundant natural resource, and they have a near-monopoly on the process of making and selling papyrus. Befitting this focus, Tephu houses the largest academy of scribes in Osirion, which trains many of Osirion’s initiate clerics and novice wizards, as well as the secular record-keepers of the government and mercantile classes.
Hanif's Father is her only living parent. Her mother (Lukman), foretold of her becoming a great champion, of their families faith one day. Lukman died when Hanif was only 5, of cholera. Hanif's father (Saadya), never remarried and raised Hanif alone. Saadya is the only person she feels tremendous loyalty to. Hanif is an only child.
From the time she was little, Hanif has been told by her father that, her name meant, "related to Royalty". What Royal linage she was a member of, was always a mystery to her family. However, in ancient times only a member of Royalty could bestow the Name Jibide on a house, so her family and especially father always assumed it was true. It is one of the reasons her father took a position among the scribes and librarians of "Deka An-Keret" governor of Tephu priestess of Nethys (even though by family tradition, her father is a member and minor clergy member of, the ancient cult of Wadjet)
Hanif's father and her whole family are members of the ancient cult of Wadjet. She grew up around the worship of and rituals of such practices but, paid little attention to them preferring not to be associated with the, "strange and ancient practices" of her father. She shunned the religion for most of her teenage years for fear of being ostracized by her peers. But, now that she's older, she wants nothing more than to honor and respect her father and family's traditions.
Her father is also a noted scholar and scribe and a member of the secular record-keepers of the government of Tephu in addition to being a well respected member of the merchant class. Hanif's father Saadya is the single most important person in the world to her. He raised her as a single dad, from the time she was only a young girl. Though, she is normal girl, and sometimes even rebellious; Hanif would do anything her father asked. That's why Hanif has journeyed across the river to Wati, to explore and possibly discover clues of her family's ancient past.
