Concept:
A ranger specializing mainly in bows, and with experience in animals, riding, and sailing.
Haldor enjoys sharing his knowledge of the seas and lands with others. He is a ranged warrior, preferring bows, but still having some skill in melee weapons learned throughout his adolescence.
Backstory:
Born to farmers, Haldorr grew up in the Northlands with his sister, Erika. The two siblings spent their childhood quickly learning the value of community and hard work. Haldorr found himself often jealous of his overachieving sister, but to show weakness in front of his community was to become an outsider, even considering his young age.
During his adolescence, Haldorr began training alongside his sister. His sister, Erika, received much of the attention from their father, who complimented her incessantly and evoked strong feelings of envy from Haldorr. It was obvious to most people in the community that Haldorr felt this way, and rumours had begun to spread.
Although he would spend most of his time working the field as his parents did, Haldorr had begun to spar with his sister and friends in Halfstead following its "liberation" by Olaf. During one particularly long training session, Haldorr accidentally - or so he would have his community believe - brought his sword down hard on Erika's left arm, and sliced it cleanly off. To dismember a fellow Northlander was to remove a contributing member of the community, and this was frowned upon. This would hold especially true when Erika died two days later.
The event was the subject of much criticism in the Northlands, seen as a cowardly and reckless act, and Haldorr's freedom was questioned. He was brought before Jarl Olaf and was excused with the proviso that he would be removed from his family and forced into thralldom forever.
A few years into his slavery, Haldorr had been working the fields at sunset, when he noticed the shadow of a dog-like creature cast along his master's home. Haldorr followed the creature inside. It was in here that Haldorr first encoutered an Ulfhander in its true form.
Haldorr pulled out his silver dagger and tightly grasped it in his hand. He followed the wolf along the bottom floor of the home. His master's wife had been preparing dinner for their children, who helped their mother gather implements and ingredients.
The youngest child, Thyra, had suddenly stopped near the window. She peered out at the sunset and the snow-covered trees that lined the boundary of their home. As she turned to face the hallway, she saw the wolf. Before anyone had a moment to react, Haldorr used his reflexes and jumped on its back. He drove his dagger deep into the wolf's neck, pulling it sharply down and severing whatever artery had been in its path. The wolf retaliated ferociously, managing to grab Haldorr's arm in its teeth while blood spewed from its neck. Haldorr responded with another stab, this time plunging it directly into the wolf's eye. The wolf stopped moving.
--
A few days later, Haldorr's heroism was formally recognized, and he was acquitted of slavery, no longer a thrall. Haldorr later maintained a healthy relationship with the Jarl and began to work on a longship, serving him.
Personality:
Stoicism, pragmatism, and courage. Haldorr is not a man of worldly tastes, yet enjoys sailing the seas with a fine mug of ale in hand when he isn't defending his jarl's lands from invaders. He has a particular respect for women, defined by his childhood experiences and the death of his sister at his own hand. Having been a slave, he recognizes his fortune in freedom and is quick to offer his help to others.
