Wouldn't matter because swarms don't attack in a conventional hit/miss situation. They always deal damage to critters in their 'area of effect' either at the start of their turn or the start of the unfortunate critter's turn. Which is kinda like being attacked by 24 of 'em I guess.

I added the umbral template to make them harder to see and to have the capability to drain both Con and Str. Be wary of your fire chunking wizard though or swarms don't last long.

Right, but if it weren't a swarm, just a lot of them, it would work.

Oh, they don't have a wizard, lol. A cleric, an archer, and a rogue.

Oh, that is bad. No wizard to back them up.....I feel for them. Though some of the cleric spells could still do some damage to swarms(I think so, though I never played one). I like some of the ideas that the people here have posted. Some DMs are devilishly evil when it comes to monsters...

Look in the Complete Arcane. It has some great perstige classes that if used right could make a mad scientist you'd like. Maybe take a few levels in the effigy master perstige(I think that's what it's called, I don't have the book with me right now). There is also a perstige class named something like alienst, whatever it is it could probably help you out. I like the fact that it changes your summons into crazy wigged out freak shows of what they normally are. It may not be mad scientist all the way but with some other classes it could be mad scientist material. Hope it helps. If I had the book I could be more helpful, sorry for not being exact.

That seems a bit much in the surprise round for a character's companion creature at 1st level.

It is too much for 1st level. A panther, or leopard isn't available to a druid as an animal companion until 4th level.

I dissagree that it is too much, but maybe that's because i'm playing Age of the worms? I am a druid and do not believe that pounce is unfair. I see how much damage the barbarian can inflict. Even if it seems unfair right now at higher levels the unfair feeling will diminish. My earlier pet(changed to a dire bear) had pounce and when he got the full thing it did as much as the barbarian on an average full attack.

Though I would like to know how he is using a panther at lvl 1? That is probably why it seems too tough.

Kobolds are definitely cool. Of course, so are goblins.

Goblins RULE! You couldn't have the monster manual without Goblins. It would be like PB&J without the peanut butter! Or D&D without one of the D's(you choose). Kobolds have scared me since a certain adventure though. I will try to list some of my favorite monsters off of my head.

Goblins-an obvious, I just like those little green fellows...
stirges-giant mosquitos, Hurray!
Corpse Terror-the monster that makes small children cry.
Vampires-nuf'said
Basically all ooze creatures-bone oozez are my favorite along side with elder black puddings
Gargantuan toad although I think it's a template made creature-read vampire description above
All mindflayer kin-who doesn't like floating eyeballs?

That's just a few, don't have any books on me so I could only name some. Oh and I think I forgot a monster...

GOBLINS, GOBLINS, GOBLINS, and MoRe GOBLINS!
