Background: In youth, Gurlzick was a brute and a bully, pushing around those smaller and taking what he wanted through force. Being tougher and stronger than the average kobold, Gurlzick was seen as a potential threat to the cohesion of the tribe. He was sent out to the nearby forest as part of a patrol ostensibly to defend the outer territory and hunt for food but actually as a kind of exile. Although angry at being ostracised, Gurlzick soon adapted to living in the wild and sharpened his survival instincts.
One day the patrol was beset by wolves and almost slaughterd. His weapon broken in the melee, Gurlzick attacked one of the beasts with his bare hands. Although mauled and knocked unconscious, he bought enough time for his companions to surround and assail the alpha wolf, driving it (and its pack) away. Severely injured, Gurlzick was withdrawn from the outskirts and nursed back to health. His courage was noted and an elder offered to teach him a different way of fighting, which forbade the use of swords and spears. Curious, Gurlzick accepted.
For the next few years Gurlzick trained in a strange martial arts that tested his physical and mental abilities. The training also changed his personality, replacing his wild violent attitide with a calm, if grim, focus.
Gurlzick had only barely completed his training when the man-hatchling was discovered. He was indifferent to the notion of saving the noisy creature but saw an opportunity to prove his committment to the elders and his worth to the tribe. For their part, many of the other kobolds were glad to see Gurlzick gone, since he rarely worked well with others despite his new outlook. Perhaps, if he returns home victorious, he will find forgiveness for his transgressions in his hatchling days.
Personality & Appearance: A survivor of numerous scraps with his hatchling brothers (and sisters), Gurlzick is an ugly and scarred kobold with a personality to match. He rarely has anything pleasant to say although he has recently gained the wisdom to know when to keep silent. Despite this, Gurlzick is not proud of his past and sees the future as an opportunity to redeem himself to the tribe. He sees the baby as a new challenge to test his physical and mental fortitute.
Note: I'm hoping to have Gurlzick's outlook (aka: alignment) alter during the campaign. Not sure which way he'll swing just yet.
