Personality
The first word most people would use to describe Grimdell is 'fierce'. In spite of not being much larger than the average human, the griffon seems to do everything with a predatory intensity, as if constantly tensed to pounce on something and rend it apart with his talons.

Grimdell takes great pride in his warrior mentality, and is as fiercely loyal to his friends as he is ferocious towards his enemies. He sees combat and singing about combat as the only worthwhile pursuits for himself.

"The time may come that Dark shall swallow Light... but we shall leave on it such scars that it will always remember the Day!"

Background
Grimdell hatched in a small pride of griffons whose ancient hunting grounds are not far from Theviss. Life was hard in the depleted land, and every griffon learned to live off of scarce prey. Still, Grimdell was a happy enough fledgling. He especially enjoyed stories, and loved to hear and act out tales of great heroes in former ages when the world was younger. He even took to having siblings and friends put makeshift weights on his back to simulate the weight of armor or riders (for the legendary griffons of the past often carried human allies into battle with them--they had grown larger in the greener times, or so the stories said).

As he grew older, Grimdell made an important discovery--the stories and songs of the past had power. And he found a mentor among his pride that also knew this, and taught him in the ways of the Skald. It was from him that Grimdell learned tales of the End, of the terrible war that drew near when Rue would know a final end.

But instead of giving into despair, the tales dwelled upon the warriors in that great battle, and the great deeds they did in the face of utter annihilation. To young Grimdell it seemed that, for all that the battle was hopeless, there was glory in the way the warriors fought on regardless. And he resolved that, should he live to that day, he would be one of them, to shriek his defiance at the End and fight it talon and beak, so that whatever remained after would remember the last great griffon warriors.

With this in mind, Grimdell redoubled his training. His pride had occasional dealings with Theviss, and from these he slowly scrimped and saved, until he eventually saved up enough money to commission a set of barding for himself--for a griffon warrior would need armor. So prepared he began to look for opportunities to fight, for he would need experience to be ready for the End.

Appearance
Grimdell is about 6'5" long, roughly 3'2" at the shoulder, with a wingspan of around 18'. The plumage of his forequarters resemble that of a red-tailed hawk, while his hindquarters seem like those of a mountain lion.
