Linah Jamil'Kaid wrote: After wishing Nuveril and Khalid good luck on their scouting mission Linah approaches Grim-Eyes and curtseys in her usual manner. "Greetings! We have yet to be introduced. I am Linah Jamil'Kaid, a follower of the Dawnflower. What is your name? I was told by Nuveril of the Lions that you spoke with the camel driver and his wife regarding the fire. Did you find out anything of note?" The gnoll smiles wide, revealing a row of dull-yellow sharp teeth. "Name is Grim-Eyes. Grim-Eyes is follower of the Hum. Is happy to meet hunter Linah of Shines-Too-Bright! Is hoping for many good hunts together." She looks over towards the camel drivers as she speaks, "Food-prey tender and mate is being not knowing what happened. Is thinking gnoll-hunter Dashki is set fire." She looks over towards Khalid, "There is being Dashki! Grim-Eyes is wanting to ask about fire."
Grim-Eyes approaches the camel driver and his wife, hoping that her efforts in rescuing the animals makes up for her lack of social grace. "Greetings to Camel Driver and Camel Driver's Mate! Is being good with food-prey safe, yes? No more running in circles like game of Catch the Mother-Pig. Is Camel Driver and Camel Driver's Mate knowing of Dashki during wagon fire? Is missing from memory during night-meal and fire. Grim-Eyes is wanting to know how fire started." Diplomacy check 1d20 ⇒ 14

Gnoll: "I have no problem with your worship of Shines-Too-Bright. It is a far better alternative to She-Is-Fiercer or Sweetgrass Voice. They are both too destructive and perverse for my tastes. Their children are likewise. I have no compunction in making prey of those who are destructive to the Hum and to my pack. I do not see this being a problem in the future." Grim-Eyes looks towards Nuveril, "I believe the halfling may have some difficulty in working with us, but that is something that we can address at another time."
Gnoll: "Thank you for your concern, Desert Hunter, but I do not worry about She-Is-Fiercer. Or, Lah-mah-shtu, as you call her. I am aware of her dislike for gnolls such as myself that recognize those outside of the People as hunters instead of prey. My tribe does not venerate She-Is-Fiercer or Sweetgrass Voice or any of the old gods. My tribe worships the Hum; what these humans would call druidic magic. I might ask you the same thing, does Lah-mah-shtu find displeasure in your being a slave to these hairless monkeys?"
Nuveril wrote: ...not like this worthless region toward where the sun sets, scrubby and barren."[/b] She gives the landscape a comtemptuous glance. Grim-Eyes shrugs, "Land is being hard. Hard lands makes hard people. People is become resourceful, is tough. Is being good things for hunter to be, is not? Soft lands is making soft people. Soft people is prey for hunters." The gnoll smiles at Nuveril, "Nuveril is going to like this land, this one knows it. Nuveril and Grim-Eyes is going to have many good hunts." Looking forward at the trio conversing near Garavel, Grim-Eyes mutters, "This one is not trusting followers of Shines-Too-Bright. They is too hard with Hum. Not live in harmony. Does Nuveril know those hunters?"
Grim-Eyes lets out a raspy cackle, "Is a hunter, not a slave-prey! Has a name. Is good, good. Is feeling little embarrassed for mistake. But Nuveril is being funny! This one is not wanting to attack caravan. Caravan is protected by many hunters. By mighty tiny hunter! Is foolish to attack caravan. Grim-Eyes is not with other gnolls. This one is from north Katapesh, near Osiria. Does not worship She-Is-Fiercer, worship Hum. Nuveril is being from where?"
Riding a camel near the rear of the group is another gnoll, different in many ways from the intimidating warrior traveling beside Garavel. Clad in a neatly-made but humble robe of natural desert colors, this gnoll stands just over six-feet-tall, with honey-colored fur and a lanky build. A brace of shortspears and a small wooden shield are tied to her back. Periodically she breaks off from the group, traveling parallel of the rest of the caravan to gaze into the distance or chant softly to herself as she rides. You occasionally see her dismount to sift sand through her paws, silently judging it for some quality that is not readily apparent. Today, though, she is cheerful and open. She rides up beside the halfling barbarian, reining in her camel to match speeds. "Is being nice today, is not? Not too hot or dry. Sand and sun is being in good spirits with Hum. This one is named Grim-Eyes. Is not bad name, this one thinks. Is the one before Grim-Eyes named, or is slave-prey?"
Grim-Eyes wishes she had something more noble and purposeful in journeying with the caravan. She was merely hired as a wilderness survival expert. Thus far on the trip, her main task has been to conjure water for the travelers. She is a freed slave raised by a hermit, hence her druidic worship rather than venerating She-Is-Fiercer (otherwise known as Lamashtu).
Here is the character submission for Evelyn Clay. I have everything statted except for equipment. Juhi is a native of southern Katapesh, hailing from a small village that no longer exists. The village, along with nearly every person Juhi knew, was swept away in a gnoll slaving raid when she was just four-years-old. Her parents died resisting the monstrous humanoids. Juhi spent a significant portion of her childhood in forced labor, performing simple tasks and chores for the nomadic desert people that purchased her from the gnolls. Traumatized by the death of her family and her master's frequent beatings, Juhi was resigned to a life without happiness or hope. Her fortune changed the day a rival clan attacked her master's encampment. Juhi was able to escape during the confusion of battle. Her knapsack of provisions did not last long, however, and the young woman soon found herself delirious with heat and dehydration. She fainted, but awoke in the cool darkness of a cave. A desert hermit had found her and nursed her back to health. Juhi jumped at the chance to learn the ways of the dunes and oases from the druid and spent several years in training. She learned to listen to the whispers of the sands and how to speak back, gaining an empowerment she had never felt in her difficult childhood. Now a seasoned explorer and traveler, Juhi is investigating the area near Kelmarane on reports of gnolls raiders despoiling the local flora and fauna. She is interested in joining with the Sand Stalkers after hearing of their success against the gnolls, both for her druidic duties and to achieve justice for the death of her family. |
