@GM SpiderBeard - I just want to say thanks for running both this and the WOTR game. I had a blast in both, exploring different character types and playing with this great group of people. I totally understand the RL commitments (I am shutting down some things myself, mostly on the blood bowl side of the house). If you ever feel like running another game, count me in. I've got this great idea for a character...

Gregor and Dane work on curing some skins from the animals killed for food recently. They were going to need some clean skins for more waterskins and other equipment. While they were at it, they pointed out some trees with spongy bark to make corks from, and showed the refugees how to boil them to harden the outer surface and remove the chance for contamination.

"Now we have disease in the camp? We just cannot seem to catch a break, can we? Let's move the latrines father away from the main camp, and see if that helps. Also, can any of you treat or cure diseases? Dane and I aren't really good at that sort of thing."

Dane and Gregor gave the hobgoblin a smile that would have curdled buttermilk, both heads having the exact same expression of fury and desire for violence on them. It wasn't a good look, and they knew it, but they also knew how it affected people. With a slap, Dane wrenched the axe's head out of the groin of the now-dead foe, and hefted it high.

"I'd normally try and scare you off now, but we don't want you running off to tell your mates where we are, do we?"

The axe swung down like a thunderbolt.

Gregor turned the sword stroke with his axe, which brought the haft high. Instead of swinging the blade high, he reversed his grip and sent the sharp blade right into the fork of the hobgoblin's legs.

"Fine by me," Gregor growls, and Dane nods in assent. The two grip their axe tightly and prepare to spearhead - or axehead in this case - the attack.

Are the hobgoblins at the bottom of the escarpment?

Before they passed out from exhaustion, anyone nearby could hear Gregor telling Dane of the massive boar. The majestic creature he described had a golden smooth coat, eyes of the clearest green, and the ring was one of pure platinum. It sounded nothing at all like the wormy bristle-covered beast they had fought, but Dane drifted off to sleep with a child-like "Wow, Gregor, I can almost see it. What a majectic beast. I hope we get the ones that did it" Soon, there were nothing but competing snores coming from the half-ettin's shelter.

The next day, the exhausted pair slept through breakfast and well into the morning. They left camp with a few of the refugees to forage and hunt, the two bickering over whether or not Gregor had left their favorite sharpening steel somewhere. The day wasn't very productive, as the tired half-ettin argued off and on throughout the day, scaring off any game and distracting the others from their searching. Finally, even more tired than when they'd left, the pair came back and crawled under the tent, only to immediately pop back out again with the sharpening steel embarrassingly clutched in Dane's fist. "It was in the other pocket!" he announced to the crowd at large.

Gregor and Dane could use the ring, as they are our front liners and pretty easy to hit

"We hate to kill any creature without need, but a boar like this could feed the camp for a meal or two. That and putting it out of its misery are good enough reasons." Gregor's brother nodded as he talked, and the axe was cleaned and stowed for carrying. The bothers had their work cut out for them hauling this massive boar back to the camp.

Even though it was only a short ways, Gregor and Dane were both panting, their massive chest heaving like a bellows as they struggled into camp with the giant boar. That little workout reminded them that it was the middle of the night and that they still hadn't recovered much rest from the stress of the previous few days. It was time for bed!

Gregor and Dane continued to stand out in front of the others, holding their axe in a defensive grip. Until Keridan gave the go ahead, they weren't going to attack, but they weren't going to just stand there and get eaten, either.

Still in total defense, delaying until Keridan can see the creature and give them advice.

Gregor and Dane took up a guard position in front of the others, and waited for Keridan to make the introductions. If they could help the boar in its state, that would be fine, but if they needed to put the thing down, Gregor and Dane would do what was needed.

"Oh yeah, boar's are dangerous. Me and Dane spent a whole night up a tree once because of one. And if this one is nearby, we need to take care of it."

"Yeah, Gregor, I agree. But if I recall, it was you who thought we should take that piglet back to Ma for bacon."

"We were ten. How was I supposed to know that mother boars can hear their piglets' squeals from over a mile away?"

The brothers went back to their tent to grab armor and weapons, still arguing over an event that happened at least a decade ago.

Dane rubbed his head where he had banged it on the lantern hung in their tent. "Gregor, what's going on?"

"I don't know little brother. I was asleep too."

The pair grabbed their axe and flung the tent flap aside, moving quickly to the source of the commotion, with Dane saying "Don't call me little brother. I'm older than you. Ma said so a hundred times!"

"What's going on out here?"

"That was a most successful outing, Dane. Look, we got several provisions, some bushels of apples, and we didn't even have to get stung for it. Great thinking by Ausk and Keridan, wouldn't you say?"

Dane beamed with delight over the bushel of apples in his arms. "Of yes, Gregor, I would indeed. I really didn't want to get stung again. I still remember that last time and it was over 5 years ago. And the new bollards too. Is that right? Bollards? You described them as heavy balls connected by a rope. What good it that? I mean, it's a weapon right? And you throw it, I get that. Do you think we could do that? I used to like it when we threw a ball with Anford. You remember Anford, from the Mill?"

Dane broke off as the running man ran into Keridan and knocked him down. The bushel of apples hit the ground, apples rolling in all directions as Gregor and Dane freed their arms to snatch the greataxe from its sheathe on their back.

"Hold on there fella, we don't want to hurt you, but we will!" called out Gregor, lifting the axe.

"I don't like the look of that hornet's nest," Gresgor said. "Dane and I've been stung more than once by similar beasts. They leave welts the size of my thumb that hurt for weeks. That's assuming they don't swarm you and simply sting you to death. Saw a small deer done that way once. We came upon its body, welts on top of welts. Poor thing. I don't even know how you'd disperse a swarm like that, other than magic or a lot of liquid fire."

Dane nodded the whole time his brother was talking, absently rubbing a spot behind his right ear as if in memory.

Gregor and Dane loved mushrooms, and were able to point out several forms of edible shelf fungus to the others as they foraged for food and supplies. Their favorite was a type of hen-of-the-woods called a "buckeyed roaster". They weren't sure about the name, but when roasted slowly over a fire, the mushroom tasted very much like chicken. When Gregor pointed out the first plate-sized specimen, Dane nearly squealed with delight. Dane held the prize aloft like it was a medal-winning entry in a fair, and giggled to himself.

They went along like this for a while, gathering mushrooms and berries until they came to the farmhouse. Gregor and Dane had never been in this part of the woods before, and were startled to see the orchard. But, when Gregor told Dane of the full loads of apples on the trees, Dane took off running, eager to be the first to grab a luscious apple.

Gregor and Dane had enough materials in their pack to make a decent tent for two people (or one half-ettin) as long as they didn't mind some tight quarters. The bedroll was enough for them, and they were pretty sure that a small work party would be enough to cut and gather enough branches for some small shelters. It would take a couple of hours, but weaving branches together enough to block out the wind wasn't particularly difficult.

They used a small handaxe to cut and trim the branches they needed, then showed some of the townsfolk how to weave them together to make panels that could be lashed together for rudimentary shelter.

Gregor and Dane gripped the haft of their axe tightly as the wolf attacked, but then relaxed slightly when Gregor saw Keridan's special skills coming to play. As the wolf backed down and the druid began tending to her and the pups, Gregor described the scene to Dane, who frequently responded with smalls "oh" and "awwwww" noises.

Then, Dane spoke up, "Can we keep her, Keridan? Not as a pet, but as a stalwart companion? I've heard stories of druids and rangers with wolves for companions. Maybe that's you?"

Gregor and Dane flinched as the little creatures dived at them with tiny blades, then lashed out sideways with the axe, swinging at head height...so about at the knees for most creatures.

Just want to let everyone know that I am traveling next week for a MAJOR test/evaluation event for a software product my company develops. In the leadup to that, I am going to be really busy at work, and at home, prepping for the week-long trip. I may not be able to post reliably until after I am back.

Gregor and Dane shrugged. "Okay brother-mine. Let's get busy." Dane said to Gregor, and they gripped the axe tight, moving closer towards the den.

Gregor and Dane held up a hand to indicate they should stop and be wary. Gregor looked at the hole, axe ready, even as Dane sniffed the air.

"What's that smell, Gregor? I don't like that smell."

"Dane, we're at the edge of a tunnel, likely to fairy lands of light and lore. I think they use that smell to keep mortals away. You know, as a deception. There's even a tuft of fur here, as a flag that says 'dare not ye stay, mortals, for here be danger'. They've even caused the sun to flee this place, cloaking it in deadly shadow."

Gregor turned his head to Ausk. "Let's get everyone moving. I don't think we want to stay here longer than it takes to walk past."

Dane turned his blind eyes on Gregor, then back to the others. "Gregor and I are caravan guards, mercenaries in every sense. We're not looking to get paid to fight the hobgoblins, but if we can help out you folks and get fed while doing it, we'll call it a bargain."

Gregor chimed in. "Dane's right. Doesn't look like there'll be much call for caravan guards with an army about. And we've got to eat. Might as well pitch in here for a share of the provisions. Can probably help out there, too. Dane and I aren't the sneakiest poachers in the woods, but we know how to trap and build shelters. We can probably get this group a stable place to live, mostly out of the weather, for now."

I put in some initial jobs for everyone. We can move those about as needed. Gregor and Dane will help build shelters and find food with their amazing +6 to Survival rolls

Gregor and Dane slumped once more as the hobgoblin died, their fury draining them of strength and will for a short bit. After a minute or so, they finally paid attention to what the others were saying.

"Umm...we can swim pretty well, if someone wants to carry this chain shirt for us. It will weigh us down a lot." Dane said.

Gregor put in If there's any chance of danger on the other side, I think we'd rather be on that side of the river protecting this lot. Derrig's right. If he can swim across and operate the crane, then I think that's the better option."

I second the motion to have Gregor/Dane go across with the refus and leave Derrig to operate the crane and swim. We can easily pull him across ont eh rope if needed.

Gregor saw red as he grew more and more frustrated with this opponent. He could feel his muscles swelling, and Dane's comments of "What's going on?" and "Are we still fighting" fell away into the distance. All he could see was that hobgoblin surrounded by the red haze. The axe came up with an underhanded swing, with less power than one of his overhand chops but difficult to avoid..

Growling in frustration, Gregor stepped to the side and ignored Dane's apologies as he brought the axe back around...and got it hung on a branch.

"We've got to move out of these trees," he barked at Derrig.

On a personal note: I've been going through a near-crippling bout of depression recently. It has been all I can do to function at work and at home with the kids. As soon as they are in bed, I shut down. I apologize that that has made my contributions here a little scattered. things are improving and hopefully they'll continue to.

"Waaaaaagggghhhh!" Gregor shouted as he ran towards the wood. His speed carried him over the verge of the road. At the last moment, he Switched his grip, aiming for an underhanded swing. Dane took that moment to try and scratch his ear, and the axe bit deeply into a sapling by the hobgoblin's head, shearing right through it.

"Right. Shoot the hobgoblin full of arrows or whatnot. Dane and I will intercept it if it charges. If not, then a steady movement towards the bridge should suffice to keep it off guard until we can close. Get the people across the river and safe to the other side as quickly as we can, so they aren't cut off on this side should the bridge collapse early."

Gregor moved to stand in front of the group, axe held ready to attack the moment the hobgoblin got in range.

The brothers said in unison, "Thank you, Keridan," Then looked towards each other and smiled. Dane reached a hand behind his back to feel the wound. "It's not so bad now, I don't think. We can probably go as we are, but keep another of those potions handy in case we run into trouble. I'll try not to let Gregor run off on his own, hacking at everything that doesn't move out of the way."

Bah! this whole logging me out every session issue with paizo forums is killing me. The one time I managed to check for new posts this weekend, there were none...grrrr (forgot to sign in)

Gregor and Dane slumped against a nearby bench, one that hadn't been hacked too badly. Their shoulders slumped, and it seemed like they migh tpass out. It wasn't from blood loss, though they were injured. Instead, it was the sudden absence of the Rage that had fueled them.

Weakly, Dane said, "Yes, I think going to the bridge and getting out of here is a good idea. I don't like the thought of walking around a corner and hearing hobgoblins. Gregor, is it safe? Can anyone heal this wound in our back? It is leaking something dreadful."

Seeing the bodies on the ground, Gregor grew enraged. Dane, sensing his brother's fury, howled with him, and the two-headed brothers charged down the main aisle of the shrine, leaping over the limbs of the dead, with Gregor's eyes focused tightly on the neck of the hobgoblin at the end of the aisle.

So, if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, I highly recommend it. This year's strain hit me really hard. Likely because I am immunosuppressed, but still...

Gregor tensed as he saw the wolf snarl at Keridan. Dane noticed and was already in the midst of asking his usual "what's going on?" when the wolf leaped at the druid. Gregor didn't look too closely at the ruin of the man's throat. He simply charged forward, axe swinging up like a child trying to hit an acorn on teh ground with a stick...a really, really big and strong child.

"Gregor, I hear some hushed voices coming from over there. It seems that survivors would be hushed, not the attackers. Right? Maybe we can help them and get out of here before the bad guys come?"

"You're right, Dane, but there's someone laying on the ground ahead. They might be injured, and I think Keridan and Derrig want to see if he can be helped before we move on to the others."

"But, there's growling from that direction. Don't hobgoblins have large wolves that they ride into battle? That's what all the stories say."

"We'll just have to be careful, then. Let's be ready."

Gregor hefted the axe and he and his brother moved forward with the others towards the fallen villager.
