Toramin Gearsmith wrote: "It does not matter what they are called, Krokar. It matters what they do. Consider. The merchants send their clearly organized mercenary companies into Xilres, Andril, and perhaps Gesthil to raid. Then Andril mobiles its professional army to defend its borders both in Xilres and Andril. They determine that the 'bandits' are well funded and equipped and retreat back into Brumik. There is a diplomatic mission to Brumik to request they cease their hostilities. The diplomats are told, 'gosh, sorry, we cannot do anything to police our borders. Bandits, what can you do?' The diplomats return and inform the Queen of Brumik's excuses. She consults with her generals on how to best secure the borders. The professional army begins to cross the borders in pursuit of the bandits. Thus a war begins. Alternatively, the leader of Brumik will lay the blame at the feet of the merchants and requests the aid of Andril to reassert his hegemony over Brumik. If he can secure and maintain Sky Cliffs as a secondary capital, all he needs do is wait until Andril moves to the south in force and the his military harries the mercenaries from their position. If the mercenaries are sent south to siege Sky Cliffs, it is a very defensible position. They can hold out until Andril can support them from the north. It would be clever on his part and a solution to the problem for the Queen. Yet another way this foolishness can lead to war." "Because they don't trust Andril." Geoffrey steps into the room, weary-eyed and with limp hair. "Andril already have an enormous amount of power, and with the recent war with Xilres we have basically taken over that entire nation as well. You attended the Queen's Council meeting, you know how talks are going." He looks to Heff, who twirls his bird nonchalantly in response. "You don't want to keep using Andril to solve your problems because whenever you do they amass more influence. It's the only nation that's firmly aware of your existence, as well as your hideout location, and could actually be a threat to you." He scowls. "You're worried about watching your own hides."

"I suppose I'm chopped liver than." Geoffrey jokes in response to Rilka's breakdown. He laughs and waves his hand. "Anyways, we could take a difficult approach, but Alia and Liamsho are confident they can overcome the wards and teleport us on top of the giants. A silence spell should be easily managed, although it would put our spellcasters at a disadvantage. Not if we prepared with silent metamagic rods though." Heff jumps in. "We can loan out a pair of normal ones, no problem." Geoffrey nods. "And remember that means no communication on our part either, which can be an issue. Of course we still need to physically block them from exiting, through one means or another. If they tried to escape that is."
Male Human Paladin
"We should be ambushing them inside a building, correct? They shouldn't be able to get up too high. Dalton, do you know what kind of flying abilities or magic they have?" Geoffrey frowns and looks down at the round table. "I'm not very capable of ranged myself. Bjorkus, you're a grapple specialist. You could keep at least one of them grounded, yes? Perhaps if they get out into the open Bjorkus can delay one while we focus down the other. Dalton, Ianna, do either of you have magic that could assist with that?"

~In the Aestheric Base~ "So, drop down on top of the cloud giants, take them out, help the locals kill or drive out the rest of the giants. I don't think we have any more info to work on, so from there we will have to play it by ear." "Do we need contingency plans? It seems a straightforward mission but things happen."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey chuckles. "Perhaps. But if our mission is to take down the leaders, why bother trying to sneak through on foot where a hundred things could go wrong, when instead we have the resources to just drop on them? We put Rilka and Pazeek in an hour or two ahead of time to spread the word so the entire village starts fighting after we drop in. That way they'll be disorganized and without any orders." Geoffrey says casually, reminding the party that his rise in the military was due to his strategic prowess.

Ianna Sense Motive DC 20:
There is an almost imperceptible flash of anger as Ianna takes the drink, but Geoffrey quickly controls it. Ianna: Geoffrey watches the cup taken from his hands and takes a deep breath, listening to Ianna silently. After she embraces him and uses the forgiving spell, he sits down with a faint smile. "Yes, I'm just being muddled around in my own thoughts. Too much busy work, not enough action. I should get out of this rut soon enough now that I'm back out in the field. Thank you Ianna." Geoffrey takes a tired breath. "It's late, we should both get some sleep. We have an early morning."
Ianna feels there is still something lingering there, but also fears that continuing to press the issue right now may do more harm than good.
Male Human Paladin
Ianna: Ah yes. Detecting a disease would certainly be a red flag, but in all fairness detecting no disease could either be a sign of paladinhood or simply not being sick. So he is either still a paladin, or no longer a paladin and also not sick :P
Geoffrey looks mildly better after the restoration spell, but not as if it cured any sort of significant ailment. As Ianna gives her take on the ethical dilemna, Geoffrey stares off with a frown, taking another drink. "With all of our magic and wisdom and divination powers, we can't find the greater good? I'm not an ideologue, I don't expect perfection. But damn...I've seen the most well-meaning decisions turn into horrors." He curls his lip. "Incompetence is not an excuse. Inability would be one thing, but we humanoids wrap ourselves up in political games and pointless struggles that end up destroying the lives of the least fortunate among us. It's all I can do to keep them from going at each other's throats, much less actually working for the common good." Geoffrey drains his drink, standing up with a slight wobble to fill the glass again. "Our suffering is by our own design. Not by random chance, or by the cruelty of the gods. It is the fault of our fellow man. Perfection? Of course we can't attain that." He sets the decanter down with a quick bang. "But we can do better than this...this farce."
Male Human Paladin
Ianna: "I don't think it's not getting the chance to spend some time relaxing. I think that's just...what I've thought as preferable to the alternative."
"In fact I'm more like your brother than not, devoted to the work. But it feels as if everything I've been doing lately has...been like trying to push a mountain. What small good I do is overshadowed, and sometimes it just gets worse." Geoffrey remains silent and still as Ianna beings to scan him with her trio of spells. But after a moment he speaks again after taking another drink. "What happened in Xilres? The worst of it, but far from everything that's been nagging my conscience..." He takes another drink and looks off. "How do we really know what the greater good is?.." Ianna detects nothing that gives her great alarm. No diseases (what kind of terrifying disease would infect a paladin of Geoffrey's power anyways?), no controlling magic or any other kinds of lingering magic that set off any red flags, and no insanity or other major mental breakdowns. However, she does pick up some developing alcoholism.
Male Human Paladin
Ianna: Geoffrey leads Ianna into his manor, the old servant taking her coat and getting a glass of wine for both of them. Geoffrey smiles and raises his glass, then leads Ianna into the lounge room of the manor. A comfortable, well kept room that looks like it came strait out of a painting. Red and gold are the color schemes, and a roaring fire keeps the frosty oncoming winter cold at bay, making the room quite cozy.
Geoffrey offers a cushioned armchair to Ianna, taking one himself. "Ah I don't get to spend enough time in here anymore. The more money you make the less you can enjoy it, eh?" He jests. He idly swirls his wine (a semi-sweet pink) and gazes across the room listlessly.
Male Human Paladin
"Well if I have no next of kin it would go to whoever my closes living relative is, unless I put something else in my will. That would be one of my uncles most likely. I don't have any family problems though. Besides I could just easily write them out on my will, and it's just an estate." Geoffrey will trail off of this conversation as well. Rilka?
Male Human Paladin
"I wouldn't even know who would gain advantage by my line not continuing. I mean being in the Queen's Guard would remove me from the realm of politics and military affairs, perhaps somebody doesn't like what I'm doing there. But promoting me out of it would be an interesting move."
Male Human Paladin
"Tiasar and Mortimer agree on almost nothing except for that, although they have a few things to say about dwarves as well." Geoffrey laughs and gives Toramin a friendly pat on the shoulder. At this point the food starts to come to the table. A veritable smorgasbord of food, of familiar dishes as well as exotic ones, the seafood clearly being the centerpiece.
Male Human Paladin
"Ah you're right, let's not get too deep into politics. This is supposed to be my break, and I'm sure Dalton and Rilka and S'meena are not interested." He smiles and falls silent for a moment as drinks are refilled, then looks across the room and looks briefly shocked. "Oh - apparently her highness deigned to dine here this evening."
Male Human Paladin
"It's always fun to navigate the intricacies of dwarven politics. I'm sure I can't hold a candle to your experience but I interact with them more than the average Andril noble, and I do not envy your politicians. They take all the complications the rest of the continent has combined and match it in their halls." He takes another swig of wine. "I'm still dealing with the fallout of the explosive gel used during the siege of Xilres. A secret explosive."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey nimbly takes Ianna's glass and pours some wine from his bottle. "I did, its caused a fair amount of economic uproar. According to what we received from Grastle Hollow they were having a serious criminal problem until...very recently." Geoffrey looks up at Ianna as though a lightbulb went on.
Male Human Paladin
"Abrassive but productive. To be honest with a strong hand he's one hell of a soldier. Was almost an embarrassment when he was put with new recruits, he made them look like children in the circle." Across the room the new guests are being seated, what appears to be some high-ranking nobles, followed closely by a pale half-elven guard wearing full plate and military colors.
Male Human Paladin
Dalton:
Already taken care of. In fact I've had some caretakers with her the past few weeks with how busy I've been. All that will change is I won't be able to visit occasionally. Geoffrey gives a chuckle at Takaral. "Perhaps. Maybe upon the road than. I hardly think Korech would like us sparring in his restaurant anyways." He glances at Toramin. "Well at the time we met I hadn't spent much time with Toramin, and we were a bit busy with a war on our hands. Ever since he has been whisked away for other responsibilities. Perhaps we could have that contest as well." As the talking continues, Geoffrey switches topics to something more commonplace as the server comes over, taking orders for the party. The options include an impressive array of seafood, but covers a number of high-end dishes of different varieties as well.
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey chuckles. "I might actually be a bit rusty after all that desk work. I would appreciate some sparring before we went out." He gives a challenging grin to Takaral. "Well it's been a while, but I'm known for more than a strong jaw. Perhaps you would be interested in helping me hone my edge?" Dalton wrote: The mage was then more direct. "You've changed." Geoffrey's demeanor quiets a bit. "Well, I can't say the past few months have been easy on me. Ever since the decision I had to make in Xilres...those lives still weigh heavy on me. And a lot of bureaucracy since I've gotten back." He looks at Toramin. "And the decision with Marcus the Dog as well. I know you weren't particularly happy with my decision on that. Marcus has found work with the army. I've gotten a number of reports on his...abrasiveness, so I put him in my division. The man is...well he's an ass - pardon my language - but he lives to work and is damn good at it." Sense Motive DC 20: Geoffrey definitely seems to be trying to pivot away from Dalton's question. He seems uncomfortable with it.
Male Human Paladin
"To working with a sword instead of a pen." Geoffrey raises his glass, taking a long swig. It's a dry, oaky red with hints of juniper and coconut. Geoffrey arcs a brow at Rilka's quip. "Well, out at sea than? Meddling with the Pirate Lords by any chance? Would be right up Heff's alley." From the front of the building more guests can be heard entering.
Male Human Paladin
"Ah I do suppose you're the only one good at those skills. But since it sounds like I'm joining you I doubt the next mission will be so full of subterfuge!" He says with a smile. "Oh and please get whatever you like. The hours and work are long and arduous but I can't complain about the pay. Perhaps only my lack of free time in which to spend it. There's a wonderful new dry red that has been imported I recommend. In fact I might just get a bottle or two."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey laughs and turns to Toramin. "Well you heard the lady! By now she must have faced all the same kinds of danger you have, and I daresay she's probably the one keeping you alive!" He gives Toramin a lighthearted slap on the shoulder. The group arrives at a building in the northeastern section of the inner city, at a large fancy restaurant called The Kyonite Dragon. The restaurant is a brilliant mix of blue, gold, silver, and green. Aquariums with a range of exotic fish and reptiles line the walls and dot the room in cylinders, the strange creatures providing an ever-shifting aura of otherworldly light as their scales ripple and reflect. A half-elf with flowing hair and a chin made for heroes of legends approaches the party with a charming smile. "Welcome Geoffrey, and welcome esteemed guests. Please follow me, your table is waiting." The radiantly handsome half-elf leads the dinner party to one of the far tables in the back, a larger table next to an enormous tank with a blue-ringed octopus in it. A drink menu is given to start, a full 14 page collection of spirits. Geoffrey sits, sighing as he sinks into his chain. "And how have your adventures been? As much as you can tell me, anyways." He says, waving a hand.
Male Human Paladin
~Present~ Geoffrey gives a smile. "Well the...temporary nature of my current duties have prevented a full support staff from being in place. In fact, speaking of Heff, I was contacted about assisting in a mission, and my superiors approved. And from what it sounds like we'll be working together!" Geoffrey looks thrilled at being back out in the field again. "Perhaps this time I won't be injured before the fighting even starts, eh?" He jests.
Male Human Paladin
Hours pass and the bright midday light turns to the fading evening one, as the party convenes to go to Geoffrey's dinner. After preparations, they come to the castle together. As they go through security at the main gate, some of the party members can't help but flash back to the trouble Lindale had getting through all those months ago. What ever happened to him?.. After a brief wait in the grand hall, Geoffrey steps in through one of the side doors, flanked by two squabbling nobles. They appear to be arguing over trading rights in Xilres. Geoffrey sees the party and gives a quick smile, then turns to the nobles. "Gentlemen, it's very late. I am sure you are both eager to get home to your families, and we can pick this up in the morning. I'm sure the grain can wait another twelve hours, yes?" There's some grumbling but after a final look of daggers between the nobles they depart, sweeping past the party haughtily. Geoffrey steps up to the party, a weary smile on his face. "Oh I'm so glad you could make it. Was Bjorkus busy? Ah nevermind, I should be grateful for what company I could get. Let me change out of my armor and then we can go, I have made a reservation." Twenty minutes later Geoffrey is walking with the party down the streets of the inner circle of Taryin, dressed in a noble's outfit of gold and red instead of his normal full plate. "I am so glad you could make it. It really is a relief to get away from that mess for a bit. How have things been going?" Geoffrey briefly glances around. "Not too much trouble from Heff, I hope?" He chuckles, running a hand through his hair. It seems thinner than before. But despite the new lines on his face Geoffrey looks defiantly vibrant.
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey looks down sheepishly. "Well I can worry about such matters when there's less to do. But yes, let's get that set up. In nine days, come hell or high water, I will make the time." He gives a final smile and ushers Toramin out past what appears to be a very upset man with a violently quibbling double chin and rich colorful clothes.
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey grimaces at mention of Brumik. "Definitely one of the larger issues." He seems conflicted on Toramins question. He drains his glass, reaching to pour himself another. "I...can only say so much. But...if we become at odds with the trade capitol of Erandor, saying that the economy will come under fire is something I wouldnt think is unreasonable to figure out." He takes another sip, looking to Toramin with an honest smile. "Your company and compassion are worth more than you know. Just talking to somebody concerned and wanting to help without just doing it for a favor or to get on my good side. It reminds me of the good people in the world." The sound of raised voices outside is heard and Geoffrey sighs. "Well I suppose I've shirked my duties long enough for the day. Is everyone else doing well? I should treat you all to dinner before you leave again!" He says with somewhat restrained eagerness.
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey gives a sad smile and shake of his head, running a hand through his lank hair. "Alas, I can only delegate so much. Some matters must be done personally, and it seems near all my matters these days are as such. And laying them down isn't really an option. Things are...delicate right now." He trails off vaguely.
Male Human Paladin
Toramin has no trouble finding Geoffrey; he has his own office in the castle after all. But getting through the clerk outside to schedule a meeting with him...well suffice it to say it's testing even a dwarf's patience. But at one point Toramin manages to catch Geoffrey just as he is returning, one hand full of half a dozen half-opened scrolls and the other hand massaging his temples. As Toramin calls out his name, Geoffrey's head turns up to reveal a look that's half annoyance and half anger. But as he meets gazes with Toramin they quickly melt away into a tired relief. "Toramin! Oh it's been far too long." He dumps the scrolls on the clerk's desk, much to his annoyance. "Cancel whatever I have coming up, tell them they'll have to come back later." The clerk practically stammers in protest. "B-but sir! The Duke of-" Geoffrey cuts him off with a dismissive wave. "I dissapoint a dozen people every day, if I dissapoint one more in order to keep my sanity I won't lose any sleep." Geoffrey waves away any protestations of Toramin and ushers him into his office. Geoffrey shuts the door behind them, sitting in one of the chairs next to Toramin on the same far side of his desk. He pulls out a decantor and pours out a rosy-amber colored liquid into a glass, pulling out a second glass and offering a drink to Toramin as well. Regardless, he sits heavily and takes a deep drink, draining over half the glass. As they're sitting down, Toramin gets a good look at Geoffrey. He looks...older. Like he's aged another five years since he's been gone. The crow's feet under his eyes, the stress marks around his mouth, the very uncharacteristic sag of his posture, the wrinckled clothing and unoiled armor, the shadow of stubble on his face. It even looks like his hair is getting thinner. He seems like a shadow of the bastion of righteousness and youthful energy he used to be. But all the same he has an open, friendly smile on as he sits down with Toramin. "It is good to see you well. Truly." He smiles and swirls his drink. "Things have been a bit hectic here. Just a lot to do, and everybody wants different things done, and nobody ends up happy." He gives a weary chuckle. "But that's politics, eh? Gotta chip away at it slowly, all we can do to put a little more good into things."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey waves a hand dismissively. "I very seriously doubt any attack on the ambassador, it's mostly a show so they know we are concerned for their well being. Well if there's nothing else, I will have a servant sent for you when he arrives." He stands and with a smile offers a handshake to each. "Thank you so much for visiting. It was a welcome relief from my day."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey looks visibly relieved at the touch. He nods to Toramin, knowing exactly what just happened. "Thank you. That will make my next few hours easier." He looks at Ianna, then gazes up, eyes narrowed in thought. "I wish I could, but I simply don't have the time. Perhaps...in a few days I am going to be personally escorting a representative from Akropash into the city, and that includes taking him somewhere to eat. Due to the political situation I'm both escort and bodyguard, and I can't imagine it would be too difficult to request you both on as additional security."
Male Human Paladin
~Dalton~ Geoffrey shakes his head. "You've actually caught me at a good time, this is one of the least busy parts of my day." He gestures with a scowl at the literal foot of paperwork. After a moment he gives a small smile and nods. "Well if you insist. I dented my cape brooch last month and I've caught at least half a dozen comments on it at social gatherings. It would be nice to have a new one, if only so people will stop mentioning it."
Male Human Paladin
Geoffrey gives a slow sigh. "Toramin. Toramin, I appreciate the advice, but I'm fine, really. It's a rough time for many people, and as an officer and more importantly a paladin it's my duty to help them. My work will never truly be done, but the crisis's need to be dealt with as quickly as possible, and then I can relax once more." He gives a tired smile. "Just keep that honest bluntness and keep fighting the good fight. The latter helps my burden and the former helps my soul."
Male Human Paladin
"There is no point in worrying about things we cannot change. It will just gnaw at you. I know the healer aspect of that all too well." He gives a sad smile and looks up, as if remembering something. Geoffrey shakes his head and sighs. "I delegate as much as I can, but there's still far too much to get done. We simply don't have the manpower to handle everything we have our hands in right now. I won't force my men to work overtime if they don't want to, but I will do everything in my power to get these situations resolved quickly and peacefully. Every time I take a day off, people suffer. The war-torn nation of Xilres, the refugees and freed slaves in Akropash, the laborers of Brumik; all of those people are relying on our actions to keep them safe, and I'll be damned before I let a little sleep deprivation keep me from helping those people." He gives a more confident smile. "I have strong shoulders, I can carry this burden." He sighs again. "The only thing I wish I could drop is the politics. Unfortunately that's the one thing I can't delegate, and it's the most frustrating part of my job."
Male Human Paladin
"Ianna Trealamhgabha, a priestess. It is a pleasure." He pronounces the difficult dwarven name nearly flawlessly; only enunciation and accent could have made it better. Geoffrey gives a small smile to Toramin. "You have no idea how welcome the bluntness is. I've been up to my ears in slimy politics for months." He rubs his eyes. "It's just stress and lack of sleep. I assure you that I'm fine, just ready for this matter with Xilres to be resolved. And the matter in Yenrick...and Brumik." He looks to Ianna for a moment, then gives a resolved look. "It's truly a tragedy what happened and I will always regret it. But after talking to many priests of Abadar and some others, I have come to peace with it. Sometimes we mortals are just out of our league and have to make the best decision available. I was powerless to save those people, but with what power I did have I saved as many lives as I could. I doubt I will ever truly move on from that horrible day, but I've come to peace with the limits of my own abilities." Organized Play Characters
