Liberty's Edge

This concludes my report to the People's Council.

In the weeks following our siege, the situation in Piren's Bluff suffered an expected period of adjustment, but they have been enjoying freer trade for weeks now. They no longer live under the Baron's iron heel. Most citizens that did not wish to conform to our administration have left Andoran, usually crossing the border into Cheliax. I'm happy to report that related situations resulting in casualties were minimal.

Even though I have not included specific information about the agents I enlisted, I request that I be given permission to afford them special considerations in future matters. They have done Andoran a great service by making it possible for us to avoid a bloody conflict with the people of Piren's Bluff, and I would not wish for them to be forgotten for as long as I retain a position of some influence.

Thank you for your time.

Liberty's Edge

(addendum continued...)

Four guards remained. The one at the door banged again, warning that the attackers were disguised. A guard near the double doors at the end of the hall drew his guisarme and swiped at Son's feet, but Son stood firm and the guisarme dropped to the floor. Another guard stepped away from melee and hurled a small stone at Ajah. It exploded with a bang and deafened him. Behind the door, barking could be heard along with deep voices. Ajah kept his flaming sphere on the guard and burned him some more. Geddoe finished off his guard, clearing the way to the one at the door. The guard yelled once more and warned about a mage, then turned to face Geddoe. Son weakened one guard with a poisoned dagger. Another slapped his hand on the double doors leading to the balcony, causing a loud alarm to sound. Ajah moved his flaming sphere on a guard at the end of the hall to assist Son. Son threw an acid flask and Ajah moved closer after Geddoe warned him to watch for guards at the stairs behind him (which Ajah couldn't understand because he was deafened). As the remaining guards fell, the barking continued in the room, and distant voices within could be heard calling out somewhere. Son readied another flask in case the door opened. As the alarm subsided, casting could be heard inside the room.

Geddoe began hacking at the door as Son stepped into an opposite room, where outside the window he could see guards beginning to mobilize and rush towards the keep entrance. He warned the others and Ajah assisted Geddoe with his earthbreaker, finally crushing the door inward. Two large red dogs lunged out into the hall and breathed fire on them both. Geddoe and Ajah had trouble striking them with their weapons, but Son joined them in the hallway to assist. He managed to feint then stab the hound hard in the neck, allowing Geddoe to finish both off with a single cleave.

Moving quickly, they entered the room to find it empty. An elegant bed lay against one wall with a bath and walk-in closet at the other end. Geddoe told Son to burn the room down, so he threw an alchemist's fire at a bedpost, lighting it afire.

Ajah suggested they move back to the secret room in the tower. Son quickly unlocked another door in the hall near the stairs to find an empty study. Loud sounds could be heard at the eastern staircase now. They moved back into the guard room. Ajah fled back upstairs into the ball room, where Sebik was still concentrating on his chalk drawing. Loud sounds could also be heard through another unopened door in the guard room. Geddoe and Son considered shoving the table against both doors, but they were too close – there wasn't time. They rushed up the stairs. Geddoe tried to open the secret door at the back of the ball room, but it wouldn't press inward. Geddoe moved quickly to the top of the stairs and prepared to hold the line. Ajah stood ready with spells, and Son tried to get the secret door open. Sebik continued to concentrate, noting that he heard a sound behind the secret door only moments before. Son managed to work the secret door partly off its track when a stream of guards came up the stairs and launched their assault.

Ajah placed a flaming sphere in their path, managing to burn a few of them on the way up. Geddoe kept them occupied at the stairwell as they flowed into the room, engaging both Geddoe and Ajah. Son managed to break the door open with a crowbar then joined melee, throwing an acid flask but striking the wall instead. One guard responded in kind and threw alchemist's fire, which landed beside him. A deeper voice below summoned more forces. Ajah moved the sphere into the guards that moved past it, then tried to cast magic missile but stumbled over the words from being deafened. The front guards were eventually brought down, the last falling from Son's blade stuck through his back. One that remained retreated, waiting for reinforcements.

Finally, Sebik was imbued with the spirits he summoned, and tested his abilities on a curtain, shredding a portion of it with a sonic ray.

A loud roar was heard through the secret door, and a voice spoke, saying, “Kill everyone in the room below, NOW!” Geddoe recognized it as the Baron's voice. Ajah moved the flaming sphere next to the secret door, and Geddoe waited nearby. After several loud footsteps, what remained of the secret door exploded into the room, revealing the flesh construct from the room above. It was fitted with long metal hooks and horns. Ajah grumbled to himself about not destroying it sooner and commanded the flaming sphere to burn it. Its movements were slowed! Geddoe brought his blade down but struck hard metal.

The beast brought its hook around and dug deep into Geddoe's side, knocking him back. Ajah unleashed a lightning bolt, but it healed the creature! Sebik disrupted some of its structure with his sonic attacks. Son threw flask after flask. Ajah's magic missiles and energy ray bounced off from it! Geddoe continued to miss with his blade as the creature continued sinking its claw into him. Ajah rushed forward to assist with his earthbreaker, but was struck on his way in. Sebik accidentally hit Ajah with a sonic attack and moved into a better position, but the creature lashed at him as he moved! Son moved up behind Geddoe and healed him with his belt and continued to throw flasks. Ajah was taking hits as Sebik shot his rays and Son worked it down. Finally, the creature fell to the floor in pieces.

Geddoe and Ajah healed themselves a little. Guards could be heard starting to come up the stairs. There wasn't time. Already battle weary, they all moved past the carnage in the doorway and rushed up the steps.

Geddoe was the first to emerge into the torture room. Two crossbow bolts flew through the air, one striking the wall, one embedding into his arm. It was coated with green material, but he suffered no ill effects. Two Chelish guards with red glowing eyes stood there, drawing their falchions preparing to charge. The impish creature was darting back and forth in the air, and the Baron was at the far end of the room behind a table. He said, “The prisoner... take him alive. Kill everyone else.”

Ajah cast invisibility on himself and maneuvered his way up the stairs. Sebik stepped up and teleported near the Baron. The Baron ignored him and stepped away from the old man. He summoned arcane energy and launched a searing bolt at Geddoe, but struck the wall! The impish creature disappeared. One Chelish guard rushed over and swung at Sebik, but missed. The other kept his position between Geddoe and the Baron. Son hurled an alchemist's fire at the guard, causing him to shriek in the flames. Geddoe charged the guard and dug his blade into his shoulder.

Ajah moved invisibly around the edge of the room towards the Baron. Sebik stepped over and touched the Baron. Suddenly, manacles made of energy snagged the Baron's hands! “What is this!??”, he yelled. The guard near Sebik slashed him with his sword – it was also coated with green fluid. Sebik suffered no effects. The other guard swung at Geddoe and missed. The Baron called Sebik a maggot and spoke arcane words. His form suddenly shimmered, making it impossible to tell exactly where he was. Son drew a poisoned dagger and lunged at the guard attacking Sebik, sinking his dagger into him. Geddoe stepped between the guards, and in a single hard sweep, downed one and critically injured the other.

Ajah turned visible and fired magic missiles at the Baron, but an invisible shield deflected them! Sebik launched a sonic ray at the Baron but struck the wall, shattering a small part of it. The injured guard brought his sword down on Sebik again, causing more wounds. The Baron tried to escape his binds but failed. The impish creature appeared. Son tried to stab the guard but failed - Geddoe brought his blade up in a blinding arc and splattered the guard. Son wiped his face off.

Ajah pulled out a scroll and unleashed a lightning bolt at the Baron, knocking him against the wall! Sebik struck the Baron with another shattering ray! “Piren's Bluff is mine!”, the Baron yelled as he once again tried to escape his binds. The imp flew at Geddoe, lighting itself on fire, burning him. Son stabbed at it but missed horribly. Geddoe swiped at it and sliced its skin, failing to hurt it entirely.

Ajah moved into the center of the room and used his final lightning bolt scroll, frying both the imp and the Baron! Both were nearly down. Sebik shot the Baron again with another sonic ray! “Devils will hunt you... my Captain... will slaughter you!”, the Baron said as he again failed to escape his binds. Keep guards were coming up the stairs now. “Kill them all! Save your Baron!”, Galdur Vendikon yelled. Son pulled a poisoned dagger and stabbed at the Baron, but struck the wall instead. Shoving his way through the guards, Captain Blacklock himself emerged and stood in horror at the scene in front of him. His eyes narrowed. Geddoe brought his blade across the imp and towards the Baron, but the creature deflected his blow!

Ajah spun on Blacklock and began casting a magic missile spell, but Blacklock sunk his sword into his flesh, disrupting the spell! Sebik missed the Baron again with his shattering ray. Guards were flowing into the room. Ajah managed to strike one with his earthbreaker as they passed, calling for the others to finish it quickly. “Blacklock, Save me!”, the Baron yelled, unable to free his hands. The imp tried to burn Geddoe and Son again, but Son managed to avoid the flames. Son turned and launched a color spray at some approaching guards, knocking them unconscious. Blacklock couldn't reach Son or Geddoe immediately, so he maneuvered around Ajah and took another swing at him, pushing Ajah closer to unconsciousness and ordering the guards to finish him. Geddoe once again tried to bring his blade across both the imp and the Baron but missed the imp.

Ajah swung his earthbreaker at Blacklock and landed, but the blow was taken solidly. Sebik missed the Baron again! Guards swung their swords at Ajah, one of them connecting. The Baron silently and desperately tried to free himself. The imp burned Son and Geddoe again. Son moved around and flanked Blacklock but missed. Blacklock swung his blade at Son but the blow was dodged! Geddoe's blade once again failed to cut through the imp.

Ajah considered the irony of being a martyr and swung at Blacklock, missing. Sebik missed the Baron again! Guards struck at Ajah, one of them stabbing him the gut, sending him to the floor! “My Captain will kill you all!”, the Baron triumphantly proclaimed. “You thought you could remove me from my throne! I...” - the shimmering illusion expired! “Noooo!” The imp desperately tried to burn Geddoe and Son again. Blacklock looked at Son and said, “You made a dire mistake coming here.” Geddoe told Blacklock to stand down. “Not while the Baron lives!” He brought his blade across in full force, barely missing Son's face!

Geddoe sliced across the Baron's exposed neck, arced the blade around and sliced the imp creature in two! The Baron fell to the floor, unconscious, but alive.

He told Blacklock his service is now discharged. He could surrender the Baron to Andoran forces, or move and watch the Baron die. He had a choice: the Baron's life, or his honor.

Blacklock implored Geddoe to stop, but he refused. In a final desperate attempt to save his Baron, Blacklock rushed Geddoe with his blade raised and brought it down hard – but the blow merely glanced off his armor. Son disabled more guards with another color spray...

Geddoe struck the killing blow on the Baron and raised his dripping head up for all to see.

Blacklock halted and stared, wavering. He dropped his sword, and fell to his knees. In sudden realization, he halted the guards' attacks. More were coming up the stairs. He rushed to them, told them their service to him and the Baron was ended and called for a white flag to be raised at the towers. When the guards hesitated, he ran past them down the stairs and into the streets calling out, running toward the front gates, yelling the entire way.

Son healed Ajah and dragged him away from the guards.

As the guards realized they were fighting for something already lost, they moved away, dispersed and left the keep, leaving Geddoe and the others free to wander the place to look for valuables. Ajah found the pantry and devoured a good portion of their stores. Most items of value were recovered from the Baron's body and his torture chamber. A ledger with Son and Ajah's names were also found in a guard room. The page was destroyed, eaten by Ajah if I heard correctly. Son proceeded out of the keep and directed the townsfolk towards the Baron's storage shed, which contained most of the food seized from the town when the siege began.

At 2:30am, torches were lit at various towers, and we could see white flags being waved. I sent soldiers ahead on horseback to confirm their intent. The Baron had been killed. Captain Blacklock himself was waving the white flag at the front gates. I marched forward with a battalion of soldiers to take the town into custody. The gates were opened to us without incident.

At long last, I was able to enter the town. Andoran soldiers marched slowly but steadily along the streets to relieve the militia and keep guards of their weaponry. My agents met me in the street leading up to the castle gates, where Geddoe handed me a bag, inside which lay the Baron's head. I prepared to speak with them in private, but first I had to announce our intentions to the people of Piren's Bluff. Those that would not wish to stay could accept exile, as it happened decades ago.

I sat down with Geddoe, Son, Ajah, and Sebik at the Dead Well. They confirmed Ajah's participation in the effort, so I presented them with their final rewards and allowed Ajah some arcane study at one of our arcane establishments. I also arranged some healing for Sebik, who had suffered some unfortunate damage to his hands in the Baron's “care”.

They slept in their rooms at the Dead Well for the rest of the night, and would plan to travel to Alvis together in the morning.

Before leaving Piren's Bluff, Geddoe visited Blacklock and returned his sword. Blacklock was hesitant, but heeded Geddoe's advice about earning its privilege again by serving a different honor. They shared a warrior's salute, and Geddoe left.

We have been attempting to recruit the existing guards into our ranks rather than simply expel them. But such evaluations need to be handled with care. Throughout this long process, Sergeant Blacklock has been most helpful.

Liberty's Edge

Lamashan 31, Oathday 4:00pm

I just saw Sebik apprehended in front of the town gates outside the walls. Was he trying to desert the others, or was his uncontrolled behavior getting the best of him? They have moved him into the keep. It doesn't appear that he assaulted anyone, so hopefully they would only detain him. My instincts tell me I should wait.

....

Lamashan 31, Oathday 6:15pm

My scouts alerted me to a most unexpected event within the town walls. They saw tower guards relaying messages along the walls towards the keep. Following the trail of effect, they saw someone being apprehended near a badly maimed body. By the time I pulled out my own looking glass, the Captain was addressing the prisoner at the castle gates. Afterwards, he was dragged inside the keep. It was Geddoe.

These situations can be difficult to gauge. I'm guessing an hour or so might be the right time to put one of my contingencies into effect. The circumstances are very favorable, since at that time, the last bit of daylight will disappear behind the mountains. I hope the others make the best of it.

(addendum for current entry)

Son and Ajah spoke about infiltrating the keep to break Geddoe out. Knowing they would need help, Ajah went to Sebik's door and knocked. There was no answer. The wood had been warped, jamming the door shut. Son went downstairs in his Granger disguise and asked if Ben had seen him. Ben said he saw Sebik come through and return to his room a couple hours ago. Granger said he had some thinking to do, and Ben offered to send him up some dinner, since supplies would run low soon. Granger accepted.

A few minutes later, one of the barmaids knocked at Granger's door and dropped off a plate of mutton with tea and a couple of napkins, then left. Ajah said he could get them both inside the keep with gaseous magics, but wanted to preserve his other spells just in case. They needed to find out where the cells are. The difficulty would be getting out after they are inside.

Ajah stroked his belly and repositioned a large leech under a different slab of fat. Granger raised an eyebrow at this, then blotted his mouth with a napkin. The napkin had a phrase scribbled on it - “Keep door password: Red crow, White crow. (Destroy this.) - Ben.”

Suddenly, loud voices were heard below in the tavern room. Granger went down and peeked around the corner of the stairwell. 3 keep guards and one of promoted stature were speaking to Ben, apparently about Geddoe, asking how long he had been in town, who his known associates are, and demanding that Geddoe's room be opened. Granger returned to his room as they continued speaking warned Ajah about what was happening. Shortly afterwards, loud footsteps were heard, and rumblings and thumpings occurred within Geddoe's room (DM: they missed finding his journal hidden up on a rafter by 1 – that would have been bad). After the guards left, Ajah returned to his room to prepare spells for an attack on the keep at around 2am.

About an hour later, Granger went downstairs and thanked Ben for the meal. He then asked if Ben knew where the cells were in the keep. Ben assumed they would be on the second floor, since from his visits, the first floor appeared to mostly have guest rooms. Ben then told Granger he couldn't have these covert conversations anymore, and stepped away.

As Granger returned upstairs, a townsfolk entered the inn and said that the Baron had ordered a cart of foodstuffs to be wheeled out in front of the castle gates. Several townsfolk got up to leave.

Moments after Geddoe was thrown in his cell, Captain Blacklock arrived with a couple of guards and had the remainder of Geddoe's items removed and tossed in the strongroom. Geddoe cooperated. Blacklock said he hoped Geddoe would be truthful about what he did, and left before he could respond. A single guard was told to watch the outside door.

A few moments later, Geddoe began examining the human corpse in his cell for anything that could help him work the lock. A jagged piece of bone seemed to serve the purpose well. Geddoe feverishly tried to get the lock open, but failed on his first attempt.

A half hour later, he attempted again, but the prison door creaked open quickly. He hid the bone in the small of his back and leaned backwards. Blacklock entered. The guard reminded him of the Baron's dinner, and Blacklock instructed him to tell the Baron he would dine with him in 15 minutes, at 7pm.

Blacklock stood in front of Geddoe behind bars, scrutinizing him. He demanded to know how Geddoe knew Bumbo was an Andoran spy. Geddoe related his observations of Bumbo eyeing the crowd during the display of the two dead hunters on the gibbet. The rest seemed to be purely conjecture. Geddoe said he might have settled for merely apprehending Bumbo if not for the militiaman's intent to protect him. This only disappointed Blacklock more. He bluntly stated that Bumbo was not an Andoran spy because the Baron had explicitly told him so, and that it is up to the Baron what happens to him now. According the Shiyara and other keep guards, Geddoe could not have participated in Argith's assassination, so he was not a suspect there. Blacklock told Geddoe to make peace with himself, and he left.

At around 7pm, Granger was stirred from his nap by horns blown at the Piren's Bluff towers - they saw the first of my siege engines advancing. I had only ordered three catapults to fire. I had no intention of breaking the walls down, only causing a stir in the populace, hopefully to allow Son and Ajah a chance to gain entry to the keep unnoticed. Alas, my scouts couldn't confirm their success, since they weren't seen, and soon after we started firing, the town torches were being extinguished. That is, all except two at the castle walls. A few moments after our attack began, a sudden explosion rocked the street in front of the castle gates. Apparently, the Baron's catapult armed with clay pots had failed catastrophically due to Sebik's weakening of the main arm. The resulting blast burned several guards, panicked the nearby townsfolk, crippled the catapult, and even shifted the fence and doghouses in Shenk's yard. All the better for us. It would make our task of breaching the walls easier should the time come. Apparently, the remaining keep guards in the street formed a line in front of the gates, forbidding the population entry into the castle until the walls actually breach. A fight nearly broke out, but the guards' lowered guisarmes quickly stopped the revolt.

Granger exited the inn and approached the castle gates to watch the events unfold. Tandifor came up behind him, quietly reminding him of his offer to help, and returned to his lodge. Blacklock had emerged on the upper battlements and was trying to calm the crowd. Granger sighed and returned to the inn, resting until that night.

Geddoe continued to work the cell door lock without success. At 8pm, the prison door opened, and Baron Galdur Vendikon himself entered, along with two Chelish bodyguards in red and black vestments. The Baron said, “So, you are the one who killed my nephew.” Geddoe responded in shock. The Baron promised him a long stay and that they would certainly extract any valuable information from him before they get rid of him. In the meantime, the Baron needed another subject for that night and ordered the guards to collect Sebik from his cell. They left the prison and dragged him upstairs.

At 8pm, I ordered the attack halted. Damaging the walls to the point of breach would have escalated the conflict farther than I intended on that day.

Unaware of what was happening to Sebik upstairs in the tower, Geddoe spent the remainder of the evening trying to pick the cell door's lock (DM: two 19's, not enough – I was allowing a natural 20 since the tool was improvised). At around midnight, the bone finally snapped (rolled a 1) and he was forced to find another. The next piece looked more useful, but he didn't have any more success (DM: I allowed a 19 at that point, but no more were rolled). The door also resisted his attempts to force it open physically.

At midnight, Granger heard a knock on his door. Ben entered. He asked what their plans were and gave Granger a pleasant farewell, by his standards.

Finally, 2am arrived. Ajah and Son assumed the guises of keep guards, and Ajah casted gaseous form on each of them. They left through the chimney in the tavern room and used the cover of night to fly to the keep undetected. They circled the second floor looking for windows and found a room with a single guard at his post in front of a door. Another door was at the other end of the wall. They entered. The guard noticed the mist flowing in and went the the window to see what was causing the disturbance. Son and Ajah billowed under the door into the cells (DM: I guess I shouldn't have revealed that part of the map when they apprehended Geddoe during the last session!). They found Geddoe working the lock with a piece of bone and retook their forms as keep guards. The rest of the cell doors stood open. They spoke quietly as Son opened Geddoe's cell door with one try. After a few failures at the strongroom, Son finally opened it and retrieved Geddoe's items. They also found Sebik's equipment. Geddoe told them that Bumbo was the Baron's nephew, and that the Baron had taken Sebik upstairs a few hours ago. Geddoe put on his armor and sheathed his weapons.

They decided they would go upstairs into the tower once out of the prison, but they needed to disable the guard outside. Ajah and Son concealed themselves in the first two cells adjacent the door while Geddoe made a racket in his cell. The guard told him to be quiet, but Geddoe persisted. The frustrated guard left and a few moments later returned with a sergeant. After they both stepped him, everyone struck. Ajah brought his earthbreaker down on the keep guard. Geddoe struck the sergeant from a prone position on his cell floor. Son finished off the keep guard with a stab between his ribs. Before the sergeant could react, Ajah swung around the cell bars and connected again with his earthbreaker. Geddoe jumped up, moved into position and slashed the sergeant across his chest, dropping him.

A door outside the prison could be heard opening. A guard was coming. Quickly, they closed the door. The guard knocked and asked what was happening. Quickly, they moved the bodies into the cell across from Geddoe's. Son opened the prison door and went out, saying that Geddoe had to be quieted. He told the guard that the sergeant was inside, finishing up. The guard grinned and returned back the way he came through the other door. Son noticed some sort of enchantment on the prison door but couldn't determine what it was. They all left the prison and crept up the stairs.

They emerged into a large ball room with curtains on each side. Enchantments on the curtains caused sounds and smells of nature. Geddoe looked behind the curtains and saw nothing. Inspecting an area against the back wall, he found a section that could be pushed inward. Beyond was a staircase that went up. Quietly, they proceeded.

The fourth floor of the tower appeared to be some sort of ritual room. Son entered alone in his guard disguise. A large fiendish-looking flesh construct enhanced with metal joints and weapons was laying in a circle in the center of the room. Three human corpses were piled in a corner. There were two large worktables, one of which was warped badly. Sebik was tied to the warped one, unconscious. Strange fluid dribbled from his mouth, and his hands had been cut open, revealing tendons and musculature. A small red fiend was examining scrolls on another table when it looked up and noticed him. “You are not master! Where is master!” Son used his silver tongue to fool the fiend, telling him that Sebik needed to be retrieved for more questioning. The fiend stupidly agreed and went back to his curiosities. Son unstrapped Sebik from the table and took him back to the others. They all returned to the ballroom.

They talked about killing the impish creature, but Geddoe wanted to focus on the Baron. He poured a curing potion into Sebik's mouth and revived him. He had lost some use of his hands, and his body was in poor health (DM: Dex -4 from mutilation, Con -4 from necromantic fluids). Ajah convinced Geddoe that they should relieve the Baron of one of his fiendish allies, but Son wanted to press their advantage of surprise against the Baron himself. Ultimately, they decided to go for the Baron, but first they would have to get past the guards in the next room. They went back downstairs just outside the prison. Sebik did not follow - instead, he began drawing out chalk figures on the ball room floor.

They prepared the enter the guard room. Sebik still wasn't following. It occurred to Ajah to tell Son to impersonate the sergeant and tell the guards to investigate the outside wall. So, Son disguised himself as the sergeant lying on the prison floor, even talking his falchion. He entered the guard room. Six keep guards were there. They asked him if he enjoyed his exercise and laughed. Shortly, Son told them he heard sounds outside the castle walls and ordered them to investigate. The guards responded with mixed confusion, one of them noting that they could merely call out to the wall guards. Son challenged their doubt of his orders, and they quickly rallied and left the room. Ajah and Geddoe followed Son inside. Sebik was still nowhere to be seen behind them.

Geddoe warned them that the outside hallway would have many guards. It was also likely that the Baron's room was on the second floor, possibly past them. Son stepped out and saw eight keep guards staggered along a 10 foot wide hallway with several doors along its length. They stood at attention at the sight of Son, and he ordered them to join the guards that left to investigate the wall. The guards refused to move, albeit reluctantly against the sergeant's orders. Ajah stepped out in his guard disguise and stood next to Son.

Realizing the ploy wouldn't work to clear the guards, Ajah unleashed a lightning bolt down the length of the hall, striking four of them. Two were killed outright - the others were damaged within a breath's width of being disabled. Son drew his falchion and swiped at the nearest damaged guard but missed. Geddoe ran around the corner and splattered him with a hard slice.

The next nearest guard drew his sword and yelled, “Intruders in the keep!” He charged and swung at Son, but missed. Ajah planted a flaming sphere at the guard's feet, burning him horribly. Geddoe rushed forward and dropped him with a sword strike. Son ran down the hall and stabbed another guard in the ribs, almost disabling him. One guard banged loud on a door at the end of the hall, and then pressed against the wall. The guard struck by Son retaliated but missed. He took a step away and also pressed against the wall. This allowed the two guards at the end of the hall to fire their crossbows, but neither connected.

Ajah commanded his flaming sphere to move on the guard that banged on the door. He avoided the flames. Geddoe charged the nearest guard against the wall, but missed. Son maneuvered down the hall and swung at the guard next to the door. His falchion struck only air.

The battle raged on.

Liberty's Edge

(addendum continued...)

It was 3:30pm.

After Geddoe warned Ajah about being seen with his earthbreaker, Ajah told him his suspicions of Bumbo being a spy. Ajah pressed to take action against him that evening, wondering if Shenk was in on the deception as well.

In the tavern room, Ben announced that since his supplies are running low, he would be closing even earlier that night. The crowd, not surprisingly, protested once again. Son went upstairs and joined the others.

Geddoe told them of his guard shift the next night. They spoke about how to get inside the keep. Ajah believed he could get himself and Son in using his gaseous form spell. Geddoe would need to depend on his guard status. Geddoe proposed getting them arrested, but admitted to the extreme risk. If they could find a secluded room in the keep, they could gather there and launch their assault together. From what Geddoe saw of the keep, the only other way in was by the windows - he didn't notice any boltholes in the structure. As it occurred to him, Lord Almir had mining operations in the area; perhaps he might know of underground tunnels or chambers under the town. Son suggested gold might buy his cooperation.

With Bumbo's increased suspicions, they agreed that it wasn't safe for any of them to move around together outside. So Son decided to go speak to Tandifor while Ajah would attempt to make contact with Lord Almir. Sebik offered to accompany Ajah but was quickly refused. They bickered and Son reminded them of their timeline.

Geddoe went downstairs into the tavern room, sat at the bar and leaned towards Ben. He asked if Ben knew of any tunnels in the area. Ben didn't know of any, but agreed that Lord Almir might be aware of some. He added that Lord Almir has no real dedication to the Baron, a position he takes with a certain pride, enjoying the power he has with his fortune. The two guards near the tavern door were looking in their direction, but Ben just stared back at them. Geddoe then coyly asked for advice about women, noting that one was playing so hard to get they she might as well be inside the keep. At first, Ben tried to advise with common sense, but it finally dawned on him what Geddoe was asking. His only remaining answer was that sometimes, only the right thing to say will give a man a chance. But he said nothing more, only adding that he needed to serve his customers and that there would be more time for this later.

Ajah assumed his true form but disguised his earthbreaker as a walking stick and proceeded downstairs and outside on to the street. One of the militia attempted to stop him for an unknown reason, but he second guessed himself and allowed Ajah to move on. Ajah proceeded to walk about the town amid stares. Bumbo was nowhere to be seen. At the dogyard, the mastiffs barked loudly at him. Shenk came out, silenced them with two toots on his whistle, and greeted Ajah. Ajah proceeded south to Lord Almir's estate and knocked on the door. A female servant answered but refused him entry. Apparently his demeanor was most revolting (rolled a 1). She did offer, however to leave a message for Lord Almir to contact Ajah at the Dead Well.

Sebik teleported out front again to look for mines or passages under the town. He was quickly spotted by the tower guards and ordered to halt. Sebik ran away, and the militia at the front gates pursued. The tower guards fired their crossbows, hitting Sebik all four times. He stopped to catch his breath and the militia tackled him, quickly dragging him towards the front gate away from the Andoran army. While they dragged him, Sebik healed himself by killing some surrounding foliage. The guards noticed and dragged this “druid” to the castle gates. Ajah and Son were nowhere to be seen. The Captain reluctantly agreed to place him in a cell on the second floor of the keep, removing his items and manacling his hands in front of him.

Son entered the hunter's lodge in his Granger persona and found Tandifor sitting with his wolf. Son revealed his ability to disguise himself magically and admitted to being the one who assassinated Argith, which initially angered Tandifor, since it resulted in the deaths of his two friends. But he quickly regained his composure and apologized. Son also revealed his mission to remove the Baron, and Tandifor was most eager to assist in any way he could. Theorizing on how they would secretly get into the keep, Tandifor realized he could calm the dogs and keep them from barking if their paths took them near the dogyard. He also offered to hide them in his lodge if needed. Son thanked him for his offer and left. Son returned to the well, and saw no sign of Bumbo.

Ajah then went to the Black Candle. Ajah warned Viaren about Bumbo and asked about the mood of the townsfolk. She said that the food shortage was becoming a problem, and she agreed to allow the townsfolk to speak in her chamber about it. They would be there from 7-8pm, and might include some men in the militia, but usually mostly women and older men. She also said that keep guards occasionally check Argith's shop to make sure no one has broken inside. Ajah then returned to the Dead Well and told Son about Viaren's town meeting that night and that he failed to gain entry into Lord Almir's home.

Son assumed his Alberik disguise and went to Lord Almir's estate. As I hoped, his ability to talk his way around people gained him entry. Inside, he discussed business deals with Lord Almir regarding nearby mines. Lord Almir eventually mentioned that he had asked the Baron if he could dig under the castle wall, since his dwarves had detected a tunnel or chamber below. But the Baron had outright refused. They toasted the Baron's inevitable removal from power, and Son left.

Just as Son entered the Dead Well, he noticed Bumbo standing behind a building to the north near some militia, watching the inn. Son entered and went upstairs. Geddoe finished his lunch and followed soon after.

Son told them about the suspected chambers beneath the keep and added that Bumbo was just outside the inn, watching it near some militia. Ajah asked Geddoe if he could arrest Bumbo on a false charge.

Geddoe left the inn but didn't immediately see Bumbo, so he wandered the town.

Ajah assumed his Sully disguise, went down into the tavern room, and apologized to Ben for not trusting him. He arranged to speak with Ben that night. He also revealed his suspicions about Bumbo. Ben looked visibly angry. He said that Bumbo came to town a few years back and that Shenk took him in – he could use the help at the dogyard, and the chores wouldn't be too difficult, and it would keep Bumbo occupied.

Geddoe moved north along the central road through town and finally saw Bumbo against a building just north of the inn, looking in its direction. Geddoe waited there for a while, and when it seemed Bumbo wouldn't be moving any time soon, he took action. He took the pouch from his belt containing platinum coins and tossed it over another building to land in the street away from the inn. Nearby townsfolk gasped at the coin and ran over to it. The militia near Bumbo overheard and they quickly moved towards them, citing notions of town property. Bumbo was about to run over as well but stopped himself.

In a move I would have never expected, Geddoe threw his cloak over himself just as Bumbo noticed him and charged. In one fast slice, Geddoe brought his falcata sword down on Bumbo. Bumbo stumbled from the strike, spouting blood and yelling in panic. Geddoe accused him loudly of being an Andoran spy. The militia turned in shock. Before Bumbo could react, Geddoe sliced hard again and Bumbo almost fell limp. Geddoe grabbed him and put the sword to his throat. A militia was running over. Bumbo frantically exerted himself to pull free but fainted. Geddoe raised his sword. The militia tried to stop him but his spear merely glanced off Geddoe's armor. Geddoe yelled that the militia would not be allowed to save the spy, and thrust his sword downward - nearly cleaving Bumbo in twain and leaving a splash of gore dotting the street. The townsfolk yelled and ran. The other militia had their weapons ready but were afraid to approach. Geddoe dropped his sword and surrendered. The militia then tackled him to the ground, removing his sword, dagger and crossbow.

Keep guards at the towers had seen the carnage and were already relaying messages towards the keep. Two of the keep guards climbed down the ladder and apprehended Geddoe, bound his hands and took him to the castle gates, where Captain Blacklock confronted him about his actions and ordered the guards to put him in a cell. The guards dragged him inside the keep and locked him away. He saw Sebik in a cell across from him.

Ajah overheard the commotion from within the tavern room. A townsfolk told him someone fitting Geddoe's description had killed Bumbo in the street and was taken to the castle. Ben stared in disbelief. Ajah went upstairs and told Son. Son appealed to the bright side, that one of them was now inside the keep.

It was 6:00pm. And it appeared at that moment that the timeline for the strike on the Baron had been determined.

Liberty's Edge

(addendum continued...)

Inside the inn, Ben quietly demanded who was there. Son and Ajah identified themselves, and Ben secured the door for the evening. He asked if they knew when or if Geddoe would return, but they did not. Son and Ajah went up to their rooms. Son was without any disguise now, allowing Ben to finally see his true form.

Geddoe eventually emerged from the temple and returned to the inn. The door was locked, but after a knock and a short pause, Ben opened the door for him. Geddoe admitted why they were in town, and Ben repeated his warning that they not do anything that would bring guards into his inn to search, otherwise he couldn't allow them to return. Ben was willing to volunteer more aid when he would be told more about their plan to remove the Baron.

Geddoe went upstairs and knocked on Son's door. He told him about his militia duty near the keep gate in the morning and his meeting with Blacklock at 2pm. Son was impressed, but demanded to know Geddoe's interest in the temple of Asmodeus. Geddoe ignored his demand and went to his room, leaving Son awake and concerned.

Ajah went to Son's room. He admitted his attitude towards Ben was initially too harsh. Son agreed. Ajah expressed concern about Bumbo, wondering what he was really about. He volunteered to cast magic that would read Bumbo's mind during a conversation to see if his thoughts would betray him.

The next morning, Geddoe awoke earlier to clean himself for the morning shift. Ben went downstairs to open the inn, his loud footsteps waking the others. Geddoe had some morning brew before heading straight to the keep. When he arrived, the keep guards recognized him and assigned his duty just north of the castle gate. The two militiamen there yawned and left. A female militia arrived to take her post next to Geddoe. She was visibly impressed with him.

Not long after, a few keep guards carted out some long and large pieces of wood. They gather a few more militia to assist assembling a gibbet. It was long enough to hold 6 people, at least. After it was assembled, the guards came out again with a covered cart. When they pulled the tarp away, it revealed two dead men with blackened faces, their tongues hanging out. They raised the bodies and hung them on the gibbet as some sort of public display.

Inevitably, townsfolk wandered by and gasped. Word spread quickly. By the time Son and Ajah went downstairs to have breakfast, everyone there was already talking about it.

The guards had also wheeled out the catapult and began to set it up again.

Sebik arose from his day-long sleep (actually David missed that last couple sessions) and went downstairs. He had bound some new spirits and was planning to scribe some magical words on scrolls and conceal shrunken items in his clothing.

After his tea, Son in his Granger persona went to the castle. There was already a large crowd, and Granger looked upon the bodies – they were the two hunters he spoke with at the lodge. Tandifor the elf was there with his wolf. Ajah in his Sully disguise arrived soon afterwards. He eyed the catapult, noting its structure.

The Captain was on top of the castle walls, looking down upon all of the townsfolk. When he seemed satisfied that enough people were there to hear what he had to say, he came down and stood on top of a crate. He stated that the two men had tried to escape the town on the previous night, and reminded the population that the same fate awaits the rest of them should they attempt the same traitorous action.

Tandifor was visibly angry. Geddoe noticed Bumbo eyeing the crowd with more clarity than he expected. Granger asked to speak to Tandifor later. He agreed and left with his wolf. Viaren and Smaar the blacksmith were also in the crowd, nervous at what Captain Blacklock had to say.

Sebik went to the supply shop to pick up supplies for his plans. The owners dismissed him at every opportunity but happily took his money. As he left, they commented to each other that “the elf” should be hung next.

Son returned to the inn and spoke with Ajah about confronting Bumbo. Sebik joined them as well. Sebik's ability to warp wood would be used to weaken the catapult. Then they would confront Bumbo. Sebik also revealed that the word he scribed could paralyze anyone reading it.

Bumbo had gone back inside the dogyard shack with Shenk. Shortly afterwards, Geddoe saw him leave and move towards the inn. A well dressed man got in line to speak to the Baron at the castle gate. Geddoe asked the militia woman who he was. It was Lord Almir, a wealthy owner of a mining operation in the nearby mountains who lives in the large estate in the southern part of town.

Son left in his Alberik disguise and waited for the others at the dogyard. Ajah and Sebik left the inn separately to go towards the keep. However, in their attempt to take a side way, they happened to pass right along Bumbo, who seemed to be watching the inn. Ajah cast his mind reading magic and Sebik asked why he was watching the inn. Bumbo stupidly denied any wrongdoing, but Ajah was able to detect thoughts of Bumbo believing that he may need to watch Sebik as well. Bumbo then nervously moved away from them. They followed. Two nearby militia demanded what was happening. In a display I'm sorry I missed, Ajah loudly claimed that Bumbo had propositioned him in the alleyway. The militiamen demanded they break it up, and Ajah stormed off towards the keep. Bumbo moved in the other direction, but Sebik saw him pause to watch Ajah turn another corner. Sebik then turned to the two militiamen and asked if they were hiding anything. They just looked at each other and laughed, telling him to take a needed nap.

Sebik finally found Ajah in the alley behind the temple. Ajah cast invisibility on Sebik, and they both moved towards the castle gate. Sebik carefully approached the catapult, but he kicked a small stone. The guards paused and wondered what the sound was. Immediately, Ajah went into a loud decry of the public display of the two dead men. A few of the guards moved forward to silence him, and Sebik reached over and weakened the main arm of the catapult. He then wandered off to let the invisibility wear off. The guards warned Ajah to save his words for the Baron. Ajah kept complaining, and Geddoe stepped over. Ajah whispered for him to strike him, so Geddoe hit him with the butt of his crossbow. Ajah stooped and stood upright, silent. Lord Almir was visibly disgusted by the display, as was the militia woman (she had previously agreed to join Geddoe later for “sword practice”, but canceled after this small act).

Geddoe's shift had just ended, so he went into the Conqueror's Blade. He wasn't welcomed, so he left and returned to the Dead Well.

After Lord Almir emerged from his turn with the Baron, Ajah went inside and voiced his protest against the display, then complained about the “one-eyed” guard that struck him while citing the value of duty. Blacklock easily knew of whom he was speaking. The Baron told him the display would remain until the people are properly reminded of their obligation to the town and that disobedience does not go unpunished.

Curiously, Sebik had also gotten in line to speak with the Baron, but when he got into the courtyard, instead of moving towards the keep entrance, he wandered south towards the stables. The guards tried to grab him but he slipped in behind the building. Two more guards ran around the the other way and surrounded him. Finally, they grabbed him and dragged him into the keep, intent on taking him to a cell. The Baron and Captain laughed at this old man that the guards found to be such a threat, and the Captain ordered them to throw him out.

Shortly before 2pm, Geddoe proceeded to the keep for his appointment with the Baron. As he entered the castle courtyard, he saw a servant round the keep from behind, knock on the door, speak some words, and walk through the opened doors. Geddoe walked up and knocked. The eye slit opened and the guard waited. Geddoe said he was there to see the Captain. The guard told him to wait and the eye slit slammed shut. A few moments later, Captain Blacklock greeted Geddoe and allowed him entry. He lead him past the Baron's public chamber, through hallways, up a round of stairs and into the main guard room. While he did so, he asked Geddoe about his confrontation with the one who complained about the dead bodies and warned him not to give the population a reason to do any more than protest. Geddoe saw a couple servants moving from room to room, and a wide hallway on the second floor was choked with guards standing at attention. Blacklock dismissed a few of the guards from the room and spoke in great detail with Geddoe. According to those I questioned, they discussed tactical details of my army (which I hope for Geddoe's sake he was only sharing to keep his facade intact), and the Captain warned Geddoe to be on the lookout for anyone bearing large weaponry that could do the kind of damage found on Argith's bed (the earthbreaker, when it missed, cracked and splintered its frame – Smaar the blacksmith was asked what could cause the damage. He told them it was more likely a two-bladed weapon of some sort to throw them off the trail. Blacklock wasn't convinced and thought the weapon was more blunt style). He also said that the two hunters that were captured refused to admit to the assassination, but the Baron wanted to make an example of them anyway.

After he was finished, Geddoe stopped by the militia house to receive his next shift from the commander. The commander reminded him that he is to report back immediately after his shift ends, and that his next shift would be at the north end of town near the Black Candle on the next night from 7pm to midnight. After that, he could expect some longer shifts.

Meanwhile, Sebik used his teleport ability to appear outside the town walls. He was quickly noticed by those at the entrance and was dragged inside. Frustrated that he seemed to be able to get away with anything, he went back into the inn. I can only assume he was actually trying to be put in a cell at the keep.

Inside the inn, Son had been sitting at one of the tables in his Granger disguise, listening to the various townsfolk. They continued to discuss the hangings and were concerned about their own safety. Some discussions would turn into debates about the Baron, usually ending with one quickly hushing the other for fear of being overheard. Geddoe returned and shared pleasantries with Ben – he was starting to run low on supplies, so business was going to suffer. Geddoe went upstairs and warned Ajah not to be seen with his earthbreaker.

Liberty's Edge

(continued addendum...)

There was continued panic throughout the population, but most were remaining in their homes this time. Guards and militia were preparing themselves for a counterattack that would never come.

Son returned to the inn, nodded again to Ben, retrieved some coin from his room, and went to Viaren's Black Candle. He thanked her for the “medicines” she provided and asked about the guards in Argith's shop. She told him that two of the guards leave at night, as far as she could tell, and that Argith usually sleeps up on the second floor, if at all.

While they spoke, guards were gathering more supplies from Argith and carting it away. By chance, Son noticed Bumbo standing just behind a building to the south, looking in his direction. Viaren asked what was happening, but by the time she looked out the window, he was gone. She hadn't noticed anything strange about him before. They both agreed they needed to use more caution.

Son left the shop and moved south to see if he could find Bumbo anywhere. On the way, he noticed Geddoe standing at attention outside the temple of Asmodeus. In his Granger persona Son pretended to need help, but Geddoe shrugged him off. He at least said that the guards had recognized him and that he'd likely end up speaking to the Captain. Until that time, he was doing what he must and that Son should continue his own efforts. Despite Son's objection to doing anything separately, Geddoe refused to accompany him, but he assured him he would join the group when he could.

Confused by Geddoe's behavior (he didn't seem magically compelled), Son continued toward the Dead Well and saw Bumbo loitering at the southern end of the hunter lodge. He moved around to get a better look, but Bumbo had disappeared. Son returned to his room at the Dead Well and awaited nightfall (Ajah was busy preparing spells for the night and Son didn't want to interrupt).

Geddoe continued his guard duty, allowing various townsfolk, militia and the occasional keep guard to enter the temple. Most of the time, they left again soon afterwards. At 7pm, shift changes occurred, and various keep guards went into the Conqueror's Blade. The man and his two sons were seen once again leaving the castle. The catapult was wheeled inside the castle gates. When 10pm finally arrived, the Guard Captain himself left the castle and saw Geddoe standing at the temple doors. He bid everyone a good night and approached.

He commended Geddoe on his duty but asked Shiyara to relieve him so they could speak. Why is Geddoe so willingly obeying her commands? The more I discover about this situation, the more it concerns me. In any case, Blacklock invited Geddoe into the Blade for a drink.

They sat alone at a table and spoke. All I know of the conversation was that Geddoe stated he was a former member of the Andoran army, and that Blacklock had agreed to take him on as part of the town militia. They also planned to speak at length together inside the keep after the Baron was finished seeing the townsfolk the next day. What they plan to discuss, I do not know. Frankly, I am beginning to regret my choice to recruit him. I hope my concerns are not founded. Afterwards, Blacklock paid for his meal and spent time with his men. Geddoe paid for a round of drinks for the guards as well. After a small while, the Captain excused himself for the night and left the Blade.

It was 11pm. Ajah entered Son's room. Son informed Ajah of Geddoe's odd behavior, and they decided tonite's strike was up to the two of them, since Sebik was still locked away in his room (David had a task to attend to and couldn't make it until very late in the session). He also warned about Bumbo, that he seemed to be following him earlier. They discussed using the horses as a distraction, blowing up Argith's shop, disabling the catapult, and even offing Bumbo.

They finally decided to disguise themselves as militiamen and take out Argith. But first they had to leave the inn. Being so late at night, Ben had already closed up and was cleaning some final glasses before retiring. He stopped Granger on his way out and asked what he was up to. Son pretended to need more herbal aid from Viaren. Ben called his bluff and demanded what he was in town for. Ajah went by in his Sully disguise and said he needed fresh air. Ben smartly compared his bluff to Son's and repeated his demand for the truth.

They weren't willing to be truthful, so Ben warned them that if they were up to anything that would bring guards looking in his tavern for them, he didn't want them to return. They refused to admit being in town with Geddoe, but they did say they wanted to remove the Baron from power. Ben shared his desire to see the Baron gone. He said the Baron had been trying to convert the town for years, and recent visits from representatives of Cheliax must have finally turned him the rest of the way. Ajah threatened to bring the tavern down if Ben was spying for the Baron. Ben just dismissed his words as brave.

As an ultimatum, Ben told them to convince him they would be successful at what they were attempting. The talks didn't go well. But Ajah assured Ben that they would both leave and return under stealth. They would leave in gaseous form and return invisibly. Ben agreed, reluctantly. He extinguished the nearby hearth so they could leave through the chimney.

Geddoe enjoyed a cigar outside the Blade after his meal, then went south in town to a militia house. A keep guard anwered the door and assigned Geddoe militia duty near the castle gates the next morning from 7am to noon. The guard seemed very happy that Geddoe had his own sleeping arrangements. Soon afterwards, Geddoe returned to the temple and went inside.

In gaseous form, Ajah and Son entered Argith's upper floor. It was pitch black. Floating to the stairwell, Ajah could see a guard in red and black sitting near the front door, trying to stay awake. In the darkness, they could hear a figure sleeping soundly. Ajah and Son assumed human form, and Ajah lifted his earthbreaker. But in the darkness, he missed Argith and smashed the corner of the bed instead. Argith awoke with a fright, and Ajah casted a light spell so that he could see. Argith screamed at the two militiamen trying to kill him and ran over to some vials sitting on a counter. Ajah unloosed 3 magic missiles, and Argith dropped to the floor. The guard downstairs heard the commotion and ran upstairs to see what was happening. Son managed to stab him in the side with a blade poisoned with one of Viaren's gifts, and the guard's ability to move was only slightly hampered. Argith was already down, so the guard called loudly for militia and ran back downstairs towards the door, allowing Son another strike with his dagger, which missed.

Ajah lumbered down the stairs and fired another magic missile spell at the guard. He fell against the wall, but with a look of anger started fumbling with the bar and lock on the door. Son squeezed past Ajah and threw an acid flask, striking the guard squarely. Ajah used his final magic missile spell, and the guard dropped. Quickly they both used acid flasks to make their wounds appear to be caused from chemicals, and Ajah cast invisibility to conceal themselves.

Outside the door, a couple militia had heard the commotion and were trying to break in. Just as the invisibilities were cast and Ajah and Son stood next to the door, the Guard Captain himself busted the door open. Seeing a guard freshly killed inches from the doorway with commotion heard only seconds before, he remained in the doorway and ordered the militiamen to check the place thoroughly. Fortunately, Ajah and Son were in the corner on the customer side of the counter where the militiamen didn't search. The Captain drew his sword and scanned the place carefully. The militiamen returned, saying they had found nothing, and that Argith was dead. The Captain told them to seal the door and that he would inform the Baron. As the Captain left, Argith and Son slipped out just behind him, managing to escape only because of the combined benefit of their invisibility on both sound and sight (PFRPG Perception).

They made their way back to the inn, and just before they entered, they heard a guard behind them yell “YOU! STOP!”. A couple more yells and loud thumps were heard near Argith's shop as they slipped inside.

Spoiler:
DM's note: It would have been much better for this to happen while the Captain was guarding the doorway. Perfect chance for them to slip out. Drat!

Liberty's Edge

Lamashan 30, Wealday 4:00pm

(personal log continued...)

The losses we suffered at Piren's Bluff's northern wall were most unfortunate. I wasn't aware that the Baron would dare show such open disregard. It was quite a risk on his part, provoking a full attack as he did. I am thankful that my field commanders held back their desire for retaliation before I arrived. My first course of action was to warn everyone to keep their distance. We still have four days before our attack commences. I hope I won't be required to allow the commanders to satisfy their anger. Meanwhile, I'll need to find a way to provide consolation to the families of those that were lost. As for the People's Council, this event will only serve to firm their resolve against Cheliax.

(addendum continued...)

At 9:30pm, Ben told his customers that due to the siege, he would be unable to take on more goods and would have to close early. The crowd protested, but Ben quickly reminded them that the Conqueror's Blade was still open.

Meanwhile, Ajah took on his Sully persona to investigate the townsfolk he saw entering the Black Candle while he was near Argith's shop. The chimes rang, and a few moments later, Viaren entered from the side door. She said some townsfolk were speaking in her chamber at a table about how to address the Baron tomorrow. Most were concerned about getting killed and the safety of their families. Some wanted the Baron to surrender, others wanted him to stay. Ajah questioned why she held these gatherings. She said that speaking here allowed them to discuss the issues without concerning their families, and it helped to keep her informed. She also told him that the Baron sees one or two people at a time every day between 11am and 1pm. Ajah then purchased some herbs to fight gout and left. He returned to the Dead Well and asked Ben for some hot water at the bar, which one of the barmaids angrily delivered after Ben's loud demand for it. After a small while, Ajah went upstairs. Ben had a grin on his face – Geddoe could tell that Ben knew more than he revealed.

As people slowly filed out of the Dead Well, Geddoe asked about Bumbo, to which Ben confirmed his status as the town idiot. Ben didn't know much about him, only that he's been in town for a few years. They also conversed about their pasts and realized they both had individuals to settle scores with (personally, I would have hoped Geddoe could have put that behind him by now. I was unaware how susceptible he was to being driven by it). As Geddoe left to go upstairs, Ben warned him not to let Granger or Sully give him away. I've heard that Ben might have had some previous experience in more demanding fields, resulting in a greater keenness than is usual... just how much, I do not know.

Geddoe joined Son and Ajah, and they discussed Son's plan to enter the keep the next morning under the guise of his merchant persona to speak to the Baron about taking on supplies despite the siege. Geddoe also told them that Ben was aware they are together, which Son surmised was partly from their repeated comings and goings from the bar.

Momentarily, they halted their discussion when footsteps moved past their door. Geddoe looked out and saw Ben entering his chamber at the far end of the hall.

The night passed without incident, but Son was startled awake by Ben's footsteps in the morning. He waited for Ben to continue downstairs, then went to Geddoe's room and woke him. They both went downstairs for breakfast, Son in his Granger persona. Afterwards, Son strolled about the town. The militia seemed doubtful about the day. Captain Blacklock was seen walking along the northern road towards the keep. He shared some reassuring words with some townsfolk, but looked grim. He stopped at Son and helped him pick up some dropped coin, allowing Son to confirm his demeanor. At the hunter's lodge, the two human hunters were standing there looking about. Son greeted them but was dismissed. Two keep guards were seen escorting Smaal the blacksmith to his shop. Son returned to the bar and went upstairs to wait for the right time to get in line at the keep.

At around 10am, Son assumed his Alberik persona and proceeded to the castle gates. A few townsfolk and the halfling that owned the produce shop were already in line. He was directed to the back of the line to wait. A woman was concerned about the safety of her children. The halfling recognized Alberik form his delivery when they arrived in town and complained that the keep guards had raided his shop and had taken everything for the Baron after the siege began. The two keep guards at the gate harshly silenced him and ordered him to save his words for the Baron. If my sources are correct, the guard dared refer to the halfling as a slip.

Near the castle gate, a modified catapult of some sort had been wheeled out and carefully planted. It had what appeared to be a hanging level and angular measuring devices. Keep guards had it surrounded while others prepared it for operation. The dogs at Shenk's yard were baying loudly at all the strangers. Some townsfolk commented that they never bark at “the elf”, and the keep guards demanded that Shenk silence them. Shenk and Bumbo emerged from the shack to tend to the dogs.

Finally, 11am arrived. The first group entered, and 15 minutes later, emerged again, appearing no more satisfied than when they entered. The halfling was only inside for 5 minutes before he was escorted out and warned about his mannerisms. Son's turn finally came, and he entered the castle walls. The keep had numerous arrow slits for windows on every floor that a small person would possibly be able to squeeze through. There were also a barracks and stable, and a third building behind the keep, the purpose of which was unknown. A large group of keep guards stopped him some distance away while another banged on the front doors. An eye slit opened, to which the keep guard quietly uttered some words, and the large wooden doors opened. Son was warned about the ravens on the tapestries in the entrance hall, and numerous keep guards in the hallway prevented passage beyond the Baron's reception chamber. Son entered. Captain Blacklock was at the Baron's side, with two guards in red and black and two more keep guards standing at attention while the rest stayed outside the room.

In the Baron's chamber, Son crafted his tale about being able to secure more trade through the surrounding siege, but the Baron dismissed his offer, claiming that there were enough supplies to weather this “small time of trouble”. Son added that it could be dangerous to provoke a response from the townsfolk, to which the Baron wholeheartedly agreed. He said he would be willing to consider the merchant's more personalized services after the siege was over. Son was then escorted out, during which he noticed very large bars used to secure the front doors from the inside.

Yasha knows this part, the rest do not:

Spoiler:

Around this time, Geddoe had left the bar and proceeded to the temple again. What he was doing there, I am still uncertain, but these repeated reports concern me. I only know that soon afterwards, he was seen standing guard outside the temple and refused to leave his post even when a keep guard that recognized him from before demanded that he come with him. He was left there on his guard duty, the keep guard assured that he would know where to find him later. Son would pass the temple just before Geddoe would take this odd post.

As Son returned to the Dead Well, he saw the two halflings in the produce shop comforting each other, and some militia and keep guards were going into and out of specific buildings, either straightening or removing their armor. He asked for an ale, but Ben didn't know his name, to which “Alberik” joked that they had met yesterday and that too much ale stubs the memory. Ben agreed, paused, and shared a smile.

Son went upstairs and argued with Ajah once again about which to destroy first - Argith's shop to stop the weapon making, or the horse yard in the corner of town to create a distraction to enter the keep. Ajah seemed ready to destroy half the town if it meant killing the Baron. Son reminded him that he needed to perform well to keep his freedom, which the rest of the group's testimony would determine. Regardless, they seemed determined to have a plan ready to execute by that evening. They were also concerned about the keep shutting its doors against a threat before the strike could take place. Son considered buying some loyalty from town militia with coin. Ajah labored to alter his prepared spells before the evening came. They were also concerned that the mission may come down to the two of them, since Geddoe had not been contributing much this day, and Sebik was locked away in his room for the duration (actually, David couldn't make it to the session).

At 2pm, an alarm was called outside. An Andoran battalion was approaching. Son heard the alarm and went outside (as Granger) with Ajah (as Sully) to investigate. The battalion demanded the Baron's response, to which the Captain said there was none. A battering of shields and stomping of guisarmes began as one keep guard had the battalion centered in his mounted looking glass and was sending hand signals to the catapult below. The Captain grimly nodded in its direction, and the catapult fired. Several clay pots in a net flew in a high arc and slammed into the battalion. Some escaped in time, but the majority were either killed or wounded. Ajah regretted not destroying Argith's shop. He went back into the bar and told Ben what happened, continuing to his room in feigned shock.

Panicking, one townsfolk said, "Gods, they are going to kill us all."

Amid the activity in town, Son tested the security of the latch on the horse yard gate. It opened easily. Considering Sebik's insanity, Ajah's desire to destroy everything in sight and Geddoe's odd distance and disappearance, he was beginning to believe that he might have to complete this mission by himself. With this all too clear in mind, the isolation drove him to disappear into the alley next to Viaren's shop.

Liberty's Edge

(log continued...)

At around 7:30pm, Geddoe figure it was dark enough, so he went to Sebik's door. For some reason, it was stuck (Sebik had warped it so it wouldn't open). He made sure Sebik understood to leave the inn separately and meet him at the dogyard in 15 minutes.

The town was lit by the occasional torch, and the militia had dwindled in number for the night shift, due to the reduced urgency of the surrounding army.

As Geddoe approached the dogyard, the various mastiffs began baying loudly (4 were adults, 4 young, and a few females remained silent with litters in kennels). Shenk, the hounds' caretaker, came out to see what the commotion was and stopped their barking with a whistle. Geddoe made idle conversation and gave compliments about the dogs (albeit badly, rolled a 1 on Diplomacy). When Bumbo was mentioned, Shenk just referred to him as a “good kid” and confirmed that he helped out when needed. With Shenk distracted, Sebik teleported into the tiny shack where he came from. It was a modest place – it just had a hearth, a couple sleeping mats and a few tables and chairs. Bumbo was nowhere to be seen. Sebik opened the door leading to the dogyard, and one of the mastiffs doubtfully wagged its tail at him. Sebik closed the door, teleported back outside again, and joined Geddoe while he spoke to Shenk. Shenk had explained about purchasing terms for the dogs, and even bragged a little about having trained a few for the Baron himself. He then excused himself and went back inside, leaving Geddoe and Sebik outside the fence, where the mastiffs continued to watch them.

Back at the inn, Ajah and Son were preparing for their mission against Argith. Son had poisoned a few of his daggers. Ajah told Son he could enter the building in mist form and likely blow the place up. Son preferred not to do this, since it might endanger townsfolk, especially Viaren next door. So Son would enter and attempt to speak their way into an advantageous position.

Back at the dogyard, Geddoe told Sebik to ask one of the mastiffs what they've seen Bumbo doing. The mastiff said that Bumbo sometimes sleeps in Daisy's bed in the doghouse against the fence nearest the shack. The mastiff apparently also expressed some affection for Daisy, which Daisy did not share. Geddoe walked around the fence and coaxed Daisy out with some jerky. The inside of the doghouse didn't look any different from the other - just some bedding and blankets. Sebik took the jerky and climbed the fence into the pen, to which the largest mastiff charged over with its teeth showing and hair standing on end. This attracted the keep guards' attention, and Sebik climbed up on to the shack. Shenk came back out and ordered the crazy old man down while Geddoe left the scene. Learning nothing useful from the dogs, both of them retreated to the shadows behind some buildings as Ajah and Son began their trek to Argith's shop.

In front of Argith's shop, two keep guards were waiting at a cart while two other guards dressed in red and black were carefully loading a few boxes. They were then covered with a tarp, and the keep guards rolled it towards and into the keep (which Geddoe saw in his place behind the Temple of Asmodeus). Son was in his old man Granger disguise, and a militia warned him not to interfere with the keep guards before continuing his poor advances on the strong-chinned militia woman next to him. Ajah disappeared into the shadows beside the building as Son took on his merchant persona Alberik in an alleyway. Ajah noticed a strong smell of sulfur in the air. Alberik tried to listen but could only make out murmuring behind the stone. He decided to go inside under the guise of a merchant seeking business while Ajah waited outside to help in case of trouble. Next to Argith's shop, Viaren was curiously allowing a few townsfolk into the Black Candle...

After Son's second knock on Argith's door, it tore open and one of the guards in red and black demanded what he wanted. Son then unleashed a most impressive and ever-wordy explanation of why he was in town, to which the guard's initial protest turned into his own hope to drive this annoying visitor away by giving him what he wants. After being yanked inside, Son could see Argith in goggles carefully pouring compounds into large clay pots, each with a division separating two compartments. He then sealed the pots with a clay lid and placed them carefully into a box next to the table. All of the tables in the place had distilling vials and other compounds, all generating chemicals for Argith's work. A staircase lead up to a second floor, and two more guards in red and black remained ever watchful. Son attempted to get Argith's attention but couldn't interrupt short of writing an address in Riddleport on a piece of parchment for some possible clientele. Another parchment was hanging on the wall with some recent scribbles, but Son couldn't make them out. When Son asked what Argith was making, the guard stopped his conversation and forced him to leave.

Outside, Son reported to Ajah that he was clearly making weaponry. Ajah assumed gaseous form and penetrated into the upper floor to look around. He found living quarters for Argith, books on chemicals and minor personal effects. A closed armoire was against the wall, but he couldn't see what was inside due to the darkness. He came back outside, dismissed his spell, and shared his findings. Son surmised that the guards may not be private security and suggested a stakeout. Ajah favored blowing the place up.

As they spoke, the cart and two keep guards returned. They left the cart there as the guard in red and black assured them they would bring the rest of whatever was being made.

Ajah surmised he could possibly hide in the cart and get into the keep while Geddoe and Son pretend to be guards and Sebik teleports inside. They both decided to move towards the temple to meet up with the others.

Geddoe overheard some conversation at the keep gate and saw a older man with two children leaving the keep. “Leaving, Aerill?”, “Yep, another day”, and “See you in the morning” were the phrases he heard as the three figures moved south into a small humble home near the palisade wall. Meanwhile, Son and Ajah arrived, with Sebik arriving after being asked by a militia what he was doing between the buildings. The militia thankfully didn't seem to consider Sebik much of a threat with his less than there demeanor.

They each shared their findings (including Sebik relating Bumbo's apparent affection for a dog) and discussed using the cart to get inside the keep, which would hopefully still be available as an option the next day.

Next up was the temple of Asmodeus. They discussed how to handle themselves inside and what to do. Ajah considered the possibility that the Baron could be controlled by the priest as well. Sebik noted that he couldn't teleport inside, since it wasn't made of wood (an interesting limitation). As they continued to plan, Geddoe suddenly took it upon himself to go inside alone, leaving the others (and myself, frankly) to wonder what he was doing. Geddoe went inside and, other than knowing that the priestess was an orange-haired beauty of elven persuasion named Shiyara with two pet ravens, I haven't acquired information as to what happened. It's my own failing in this, but I intend to find out.

Geddoe emerged and told the others that she's just a priestess, stated that the pacts aren't administered by a devil, and said no more. Son couldn't detect anything strange in his demeanor, much to my own frustration. They all moved back to the Dead Well, where Geddoe sat at the bar and asked Ben for a couple of cigars while the others went upstairs.

The evening lingered on...

Liberty's Edge

Continued from last log entry...

At the sound of the town alarms, Sebik had fled to his room.
Ajah went into his room, still under his Sully disguise (causing the floor to creak loudly, which prompted Sebik to hide behind his bed), and cast invisibility. He then sneaked outside the inn to assume his true form, the bloatmage.

Outside the herbalist's shop, Son and Geddoe saw little more activity outside. The stationed militia had increased in number and most townsfolk were in their homes. Geddoe chose to head back to the Dead Well as Son approached the hunter lodge.
Ajah re-entered the Dead Well and asked for another room, despite Ben and the barmaids' stares, and asked for a meal. Ben reminded the barmaids that there was still work to do, and the inn workers returned to their duties.
Geddoe returned to the Dead Well and sat at the bar again. Ajah threw flirtatious advances on Geddoe just to antagonize a response. Meanwhile, other townsfolk entered the inn to drink themselves into a stupor in the face of death.

At the hunter's lodge, two of the hunters tired of Son staring into the window and rushed to the door, sharply demanding what he wanted. The elf inside calmed them down and allowed him to enter. The large boar they entered town with was roasting over a large flame. They conversed about the elf's entrance at the gate, the guards not appreciating what they do for the town (they are the Aspodell rangers, who kill beasts in the surrounding woodlands), and how the Baron and his guards highly favor humans in their town above any other race. The elf and the wolf seemed to share an intimate connection. Son was told that the Baron sees the townsfolk every afternoon, and that's about all anyone sees of him.

Geddoe decided to leave the Dead Well, leaving Ajah to throw more smart remarks about donating to the “commode” in the common room. He walked along the south side of town, where he ran into Tulrin, the sadly disturbed elven priest of Aroden. He was outside cleaning the bird droppings off the splattered statue and mumbling to himself when Geddoe approached. Apparently, some of the townsfolk help attend to Tulrin's more basic needs (such as food and clothing) as he obsessively cleaned the place. Geddoe was unable to have a conversation with him and was about to leave when, to my own surprise, Tulrin suddenly informed him of the priestess of Asmodeus keeping the town under control with some sort of pact documents. He then regressed back into his mental state and kept cleaning. Geddoe moved on.

Ajah asked who the Baron might have angered to cause the siege, and Ben sharply told him he cared little about what happens as long as his inn survives. Ajah idly mentioned mistletoe, but Ben gave no response, nor was there any to be seen in the common room.
As Geddoe continued his walk through town, a militiaman suddenly stopped him and complained that he wasn't on guard duty. Other militia joined in and told him to report to a keep guard about being conscripted. Geddoe tried to dismiss them with a sneer (Intimidate), but they only laughed.

Sebik emerged from his room and used his amazing teleport ability to appear outside, out of sight of any guards, and warped a chunk of the wooden palisade into a cane to walk with. As he moved through town, one of the militia asked if he needed help and cautioned him about walking in the open with the threat of catapult boulders. Sebik accepted this only as a threat and ran away in fear. The militia just shrugged and shook his head.

Geddoe approached the castle gates and offered his services to Piren's Bluff, claiming to have valuable information. The guard was about to threaten him for wasting their time as a horn sounded. A group of Andoran soldiers was approaching from the north. Geddoe was dismissed as Keep business was taking place, so he ran south to warn a nearby tower about the approaching troops and to watch for sappers. He then ran north through the center of town. (leaving the guards at the tower cursing).

Son and Ajah both also decided to continue moving through town when they ran in Sebik, who was acting strangely and trying to be mischievous with them. Son suggested to Sebik that he might need to fear his companions more than the militia if his behavior continued.
Eventually Geddoe moved far enough north to hear what was happening. Captain Blackrock emerged on the corner tower of the Keep, asking the Andorans' demands. The demands were, as I had dictated:

"Baron Galdur Vendikon... it has been determined that you are under suspicion of activities that would allow Cheliax to seize Andoran property. By order of the People's Council and the Supreme Elect, you are hereby demanded to surrender Piren's Bluff to Andoran forces. Surrender peacefully and military action will not be required. Failure to comply will result in the continued blockade around your city and the eventual attack of the Andoran army. You have one hour to respond."

Captain Blackrock promised to deliver the message, since the Baron apparently refused to show himself. As the Andorans retreated back to their battalion, the keep guards wanted to attack, but the Captain harshly ordered otherwise, as I would have expected. Geddoe was impressed by the gesture.

Meanwhile, Ajah managed to leave Sebik with Son and stopped in front of the Black Candle, where he noticed the herbalist looking out her window at him. He winked and she quickly closed the curtain. He abruptly went inside and she visibly retreated from him. He hinted about the mistletoe as Son did, to which she was becoming weary about the meaning. She turned her back and asked why he was there, and finally, after some very unmutual codespeak, Ajah revealed that I had sent him. Viaren introduced herself and understandably scolded him for not being more forthcoming, and rightfully confirmed with the same disdain that Son and Geddoe were also sent by me. I blame myself for this, since I had assumed my agents would know how to present themselves. Viaren handed Ajah a small box of vials containing various types of poison that they could use any way they wish to accomplish their mission. She also offered to hide them (her personal chambers are attached to her shop) as a last resort. She didn't know of any other sympathizers in town (one of my own personal precautions). She did, however, express her suspicion that Baron Vendikon practices necromancy.

Son also separated from Sebik and re-entered the Dead Well, still in his Granger persona. He sat at the bar. Ben had seen him in an out of the bar and finally asked his name, which Granger shared, to which Ben only smirked. Geddoe went in, threw more coin on the counter, bought some wine and told Ben about the Andoran's demands. Ben responded with interest. Sebik stormed inside and went up to his room, since no one in town seemed to want to help him. Son went up as well.

Finally alone in a private room, Son once again cautioned Sebik about his behavior and wisely suggested that Sebik master and channel his abilities to assist the group in their task. Sebik described his talent to bind spirits and demonstrated his abilities by forcing Son to fall over with a command of his truename, which he had no power to resist. Son responded with only light amusement.

Son returned downstairs to Ben and purchased a room in his Granger persona. Ajah returned, whispering to Geddoe to join him for a discussion. Geddoe dismissed himself from the common room and headed to his room “to rest.” Ajah went upstairs, waited for the hallway to be empty, grabbed Sebik and dragged him into his room as Geddoe joined them, allowing Son to keep watch in the common room.

They discuss plans of getting into the keep, ranging from getting arrested to crawling up a bolthole. Ajah recognized the restlessness of the population and theorizing about starting a riot. Geddoe thought about attempting getting hired at the keep as another possible way in. A cell wouldn't hold Sebik, which would provide them with other alternatives as well. Ajah wanted to just burst into the Keep and destroy the Baron straight out, but they agreed that they need to know its layout first. The building next to the herbalist was mentioned, since the guards had gone inside in such a rush. Ajah re-assumed his Sully persona and moved out to investigate by asking Viaren about it.

As Ajah left the inn, Ben just watched with a grin, cleaning another glass while shaking his head. Ajah revealed himself to Viaren once more, leaving her wondering which form was actually his... he discovered from her that Argith is a chemist of sorts, a little too happy to experiment. She theorized that the guards depend on him for alternate forms of weaponry, such as alchemist's fire.

Sebik interrupted Geddoe in his room to bind another spirit. Apparently, he needed the extra floor space. Geddoe huffed and went back downstairs, telling Ben to provide drinks all around (tossing coin into a bag to pay for it) and sat in the corner to clean his weapon. The two “townsfolk” at the door sat down to have a drink as well. A small while later, Bumbo came in and waved at Geddoe with a toothy smile (to which Geddoe only swallowed the last bit of wine in his glass and pours another). Ben questioned Bumbo for being back so soon, to which Bumbo only said he was thirsty. Ben smartly reminded him that the dogyard he lives at has plenty of water, but Bumbo still wanted a drink. Ben was more than happy to take more of his money. Geddoe watched as Bumbo just looked around the common room staring at everyone talk. Eventually, Bumbo became visibly bored and left.

Soon afterwards, Geddoe heard a voice calling outside, and he stepped out. A keep guard was there, announcing to the people of Piren's Bluff that the army had no immediate intention of attacking, and that the Baron will listen to their issues at the normal time the next day. He advised that the townsfolk send a representative for each group to ensure that their questions are answered.

Ajah finally returned and went back upstairs. Geddoe, Son and Sebik all joined him as they discussed further plans. They talked about setting a fire at the horse stables to provide a distraction to allow them entry into the keep, halting Argith's work (Son reminded Ajah that he wanted any chemical weapons first before the place was destroyed), and to wait to storm the keep until the next day so that casters could prepare themselves. Son favored inciting the population to revolt. They also agreed that there seemed to be more to Ben than he let on and expressed suspicion about whose side he was on. It was finally decided that for immediacy, Geddoe and Sebik would investigate Bumbo at the dogyard, due to Geddoe's mistrust of the fool (to which Sebik only mocked him). Ajah and Son contemplated dealing with Argith. After their missions, they would all meet back together and deal with the temple of Asmodeus.

As they discussed plans, a sudden ruckus downstairs prompted Son to see what was happening. A militia commander had discovered the two common room guards drinking, and ordered them to sober up for their double shift the next day as punishment. Ben only laughed as two more guards replaced them at the door.

It was only 4:30pm, so Geddoe retired to his chamber to wait until dark, after which he and Sebik would set off towards the dogyard.

Liberty's Edge

Lamashan 30, Wealday 4:00pm

I arrived as planned to a glorious scene: Catapults and ballistae, all poised at Piren's Bluff, with a generous battalion of ground troops surrounding each. The dispersal wasn't quite as even as I had hoped, but it will certainly do the job. I was informed that demands were placed upon the Baron exactly as I had dictated. Now we wait and see if our contingency succeeds.

I must admit, there is a strange calm on this battlefield. No drums, no chants. Neither side dares to make a move. Let us hope the Baron is not any more foolish than he has already demonstrated... and that my agents were able to make contact with our supporters in town. Mistletoe with a yellow ribbon should not draw too much suspicion.

Addendum: I should find it pertinent to include additional information in this entry regarding the events that took place inside the walls on this and the previous day, as related by my sources. Such notes follow from here.

My agents accompanied the merchant as planned up to the gates of Piren's Bluff. Before approaching, both Son and Ajah use their hats of disguise to assume the shape of a couple of simpler looking escorts to not arouse suspicion. Ahead of them were another merchant delivering supplies to the blacksmith and a trio of hunters bearing a fresh kill of wild hog. The guards rudely dismissed the elf among them as he lead his wolf companion and other hunters through the gate. When our merchant's turn finally came up, the agents chose wisely in acting bored. The guards questioned whether or not the product in the cart was actually intended for the Baron's food stores. The merchant argued only as much as necessary and submitted to the guards' authority as they let him pass.

The merchant and agents made their way to the Forest Bounty, where the two owning halflings, Jamir and Marra Tucket, came out to check in the new produce. After the business was concluded, the merchant feigned disinterest in our agents' well-being and leisurely made his way back out of town.

Our agents asked for lodging, and Marra directed them to the Dead Well near the entrance. Son ducked into an alley and assumed the persona of the old sage Granger Poh before entering. They staggered their entrance so that they didn't appear to be together. I must commend them for their attention to their own behavior. Inside, various townsfolk and militia were eating and drinking. Lucky Ben Willhuff was tending bar, and Geddoe went over and sat down. Ajah sat at the other end soon afterwards. Sebik On sat in a dark corner as Son sat down at a table in the middle of the room.

Geddoe appeared to develop somewhat of a rapport with old Ben, although it was uncertain just how much. Ben admitted to his distaste of the Baron, or his guards, or perhaps both. Geddoe was generous with his coin and was offered any meal he preferred, although the pickings among the barmaids themselves were far less than appetizing. Son looked around the room for the mistletoe and yellow ribbon I mentioned as Sebik seemed to want to avoid all contact. Patrons were coming and going (some tossing a few coins down the well in the middle of the common room) as Bumbo the town idiot came strolling in, demanding drink from Ben. Ben asked him if Shenk the dog trainer knew he was about the town. Ben wasn't expecting an honest answer, but gave Bumbo a drink nonetheless. Bumbo stared at Geddoe and asked him why he only had one eye. Geddoe replied that he lost it in a fight with a man he gutted soon afterwards, which understandably put Bumbo off. Bumbo shared a toothy smile with Son on the way out, and Ben invited Geddoe back when it wasn't so busy in the bar. Ajah and Sebik also purchased a room. Geddoe asked Ben where he could find a blacksmith, and Ben pointed him to Smaar in the middle of town.

Son had cast a message spell and was suggesting to Geddoe that they get a lay of the town, which was made less apparent by the fact that he was already sitting there mumbling to himself. He directed a message at Sebik, who was only startled into standing from the unknown voice. Soon after, Son in his old man disguise asked loudly for an escort around the town. Geddoe accepted as Ben looked on with a grin. Ajah took his own path about the town. Sebik remained seated in the corner of the common room for the rest of the time (actually David lost his internet and couldn't reconnect).

It was fortunate that the agents didn't squander their time in town and immediately took the opportunity to inspect it as casual travelers. Ajah made his way along the south end of the town, finding a temple devoted to the dead god Aroden (whose statue was sadly covered in bird droppings), the estate of Lord Almir, and Shenk's Dog Yard. Geddoe and Son went north and found a chemist's shop, the Black Candle (which was an herbs shop), Terron's horse stables, the keep guards' primary tavern (which Geddoe momentarily mistook for the blacksmith shop and was quickly dismissed by the guards inside), a temple devoted to Asmodeus, and finally, the blacksmith's shop.

Son noticed a sprig of mistletoe with a yellow ribbon in the blacksmith's window as Geddoe asked to purchase a shield. There were two keep guards in the smith shop (dressed in breastplate and better weaponry - guisarme, longsword and heavy shield - than the militia outside), and before they could tell Geddoe that the Smaar was too busy to help them, he interrupted them harshly and sold Geddoe a shield, which Geddoe paid extra for. Smaar gave him a respectful nod as Geddoe and Son left. North of the blacksmith's shop was what appeared to be a large log building serving as the hunter's lodge.

The town had a generous population of militia standing in near bored fashion at every few corners of the buildings in the town, outfitted with chain shirts and spears. Women with children and a few older men were also making their rounds.

Ajah walked into the keep guards' tavern and sat down at the bar demanding ale. He received numerous unwelcome stares, but the middle-aged badly groomed bartender poured him a drink regardless.

Back on the street, Son told Geddoe about the mistletoe he saw in the smith's window, and they spoke about how they might get in with the known sympathizers, also commented on the very martial state of the town. Suddenly a group of militia walked up and asked if they needed anything. Immediately Son claimed to need the herbs shop, and they directed him back to the Black Candle, warning him not to loiter.

As they entered the Black Candle, a dangling of chimes clanged in front of them, bearing mistletoe with yellow ribbon... quite apparent. An attractive half-elven women greeted them with blessings, and Son asked for herbs to treat a cough. Another customer came in asking for “sleep powder” and left. Son commented on the mistletoe and how he saw it around town.
This gave the herbalist pause, and she merely commented that for some, it is a popular decoration... as she continued to regard him. She asked if there was anything else he needed. Son politely left her to her business, and she stood there, watching them both leave.

At the guard's tavern, Ajah in his disguise was at first trying to listen in on conversations but instead sought to get in on a dice game at one of the tables. His approach was apparently either very flattering or he caught one of them in a very good mood (Diplomacy roll of natural 20!), so he was invited to join them. By listening to the conversation of the three guards (Delif, Horis, and Willin), he learned that shift changes occur at 7 and 12 am and pm. He also learned that Blacklock is the Guard Captain, and is a very honorable man, which concurred with my intelligence on him. Blacklock apparently sits there with the men at night for a while before heading home.

Geddoe returned to the Dead Well and accepted his key to his room upstairs (allowing Son to see the room number). Since he arranged a tab with Ben, he was given the double-size single. Geddoe made himself comfortable and began oiling his weapons and armor. Son looked again for mistletoe in the Dead Well and didn't see any. He went back outside, found an alley and changed into Alberik, the merchant. He entered Graden's looking for rope and other supplies and was treated rudely by the owners, and was charged extra, as I would have expected.

At the guard tavern, Delif finally got up and extended his hand to shake Ajah's. Ajah shook it firmly. The guard noticed the difference in how his hand felt against what it looked like (disguise self doesn't mask tactile sensation, after all). As the guard paused to inspect and Ajah suddenly realized his mistake, a horn sounded. One of the guards yelled out that it was the alarm, and all the guards grabbed their weapons and ran outside, leaving Ajah there with the 3 barmaids and the bartender.

Geddoe ran down from his room and asked Ben what was happening. As Ben was finishing cleaning glass in his hand, he idly remarked that the town was probably under attack. Geddoe ran outside to see the front gate closing (leaving a panicked merchant locked outside). Siege engines were visible to Geddoe coming over the hill, bearing the banner of the Andoran army. Reports and orders were spreading from tower to tower, spreading through the town like a wave towards the Baron's castle. (Regarding the merchant, we escorted him away from the town to safety despite his distress with us.)

Militia ordered everyone to stay calm, although they were little more steady themselves. Geddoe could see a crowd of townsfolk rushing to the castle gates, and Son had emerged from the supply shop, apparently standing in the town square, grinning at all of the chaos.
The people were demanding to be allowed inside the castle, but the doors remained closed since the town walls themselves had not yet been breached. Captain Blacklock himself eventually appeared on the upper battlements of the gatehouse and told everyone to get into their homes, reassuring them of the Baron's commitment to the town's security, and reminding the militia of their obligation to assist on the town's protection - with the threat of being charged with treason should they refuse.

Son decided to use the opportunity to head to the Black Candle again.
Geddoe noticed a small group of guards stepping out of the single door in the castle gates and heading towards the northern part of the town. He moved down a street to see where they were going. They practically knocked Son in his old man guise out of the way as they entered the small building next door (the chemist's shop). Three of the guards were dressed in darker black and red vestments.
Son asked the herbalist if he could stay with her, since he was frightened. Geddoe accompanied him inside. She allowed them in and said that nothing like this had ever happened to the town. Son said he could assist with healing should it be necessary. She was confused that he needed treatment for a cough earlier, and offered to help despite his fear and frail frame. He clarified that he had no experience with ailments, only healing. He then added that he was only there for the mistletoe, with a wink. She paused purposely, folded her arms and asked Geddoe what he was about, to see what these two were up to. Geddoe said he was interested in saving the town. She merely stared at them and demanded they simply say one word to her. Slightly confused, Son said, “Freedom”, and Geddoe said, “Justice.”
She gave them another doubtful look and ended the conversation by demanding that they leave unless they had something more specific to tell her. Son respected her wishes and left, and Geddoe followed.

Disappointed in how the exchange went, Son and Geddoe stood on the city streets, watching the militia rise in number from inside the residences, and the townsfolk disappearing into their homes.

The siege of Piren's Bluff had begun.

Son had already joined me, and I had Ajah and Sebik escorted from their chambers to my office. Geddoe arrived promptly at 7:58am. I recapped the history of Andoran four decades ago claiming their independence from Cheliax and offering the existing Cheliax nobles citizenship or exile (or death). I told them of Baron Vendikon's intention to defect and invite Cheliax across our borders to seize Perin's Bluff, and how the Andoran army plans to respond. I then presented them with their mission to remove the Baron by any means necessary with as little death as possible. I gave them 5 days after they arrive in Piren's Bluff to complete their mission, after which the Andoran army responds with full force. This way, everything should be over before Cheliax can cross our border.

Geddoe and Son (who was in his soldier persona of Aubert Suvendu at the time) were eager to prevent the unnecessary deaths. Ajah seems ready to kill anyone who hinders him, and Sebik has trouble containing his outward behavior. Had I had more time to select more appropriate individuals, I may have done so. I fear for the success of this mission. I hope my first instincts were correct.

I gave them their initial payment of 2500gp each and sent them on their way with a merchant that will deliver needed food to Piren's Bluff, with the adventurers serving as a one-way escort. The journey should take four days, and they should arrive in mid-afternoon if all goes well. When they pass the tower east of Piren's Bluff, the battalion there will begin their march as scouts ride west to notify the other divisions to advance. Hopefully, the army will manage to intercept any other travelers passing by to prevent Piren's Bluff from being warned. Shortly after the merchant arrives in town, he will finish his business and leave. Then the army will surround the town, and the Baron will likely have the gates sealed, after which the adventurers can begin their mission.

The lives of the people of Piren's Bluff are in their hands now.

I plan to ride forward tomorrow to join the field commanders shortly after the siege has begun. Meanwhile, I should arrange to have my desk replaced. I believe Sebik decided to play a little prank on me before they left and altered the shape of the drawers so that they wouldn't open...

I have elected to send a small band of hired individuals that will attempt to remove the Baron from power themselves before the town is razed. In order to protect the Council's interests in the matters at hand, these individuals will not be considered directly associated with the Andoran army in any capacity. Should plans go awry, we will deny any and all matters of involvement should it lead to more bloodshed than was anticipated. Allow vile Cheliax to conclude what they wish.

I will attempt to contact Geddoe Hydarion, a former field soldier from the Andoren army, and recruit him to this cause. He should serve matters to the best of his ability. Along with him, I will send Son Helstad, one of my most trusted agents who should assist well in their efforts. Also sent will be Ajah-Sull and Sebik On, two individuals that were being held in our wards for reasons that I considered disproportionate to the reason of their incarceration. In exchange for freedom (and some additional compensation of my own choosing), they elected to join this mission. Ajah has arcane skill, and Sebik has demonstrated spiritual powers as well. Geddoe and Son will likely need them, despite their less than cultured ways.

Note to self: I should remove their names from these notes before presenting this record to the Council so that they cannot be traced back to them. I would not want them to face greater risk. I will, however, leave their names in my personal notes.

Alas, our suspicions have been confirmed. Despite our attempts to offer Baron Vendikon full citizenship in Andoran, it appears he has indeed decided to give his holdings in Piren's Bluff to Cheliax. My Consul has decreed that we are to lay siege to the town and either demand that the Baron surrender himself, or take whatever action is necessary to remove him from his seat. According to my sources, he has recently saturated his population with guards and militia willing to serve his interests should the city come under attack. The Baron is unlikely to surrender his holdings willingly. This will undoubtedly, as expected, lead to extensive bloodshed of the townsfolk.

There was no swaying the Council. Decades of freedom are not to be undone in any way, nor will the world be allowed to interpret this one man's actions as a possible way to undermine Andoran philosophy from within. Most importantly, we cannot allow Cheliax to cross our borders and seize the town. The Baron will be removed from power if it requires that the entire town by razed to the ground.

It will be a day long remembered for its butchery.

Not if I have anything I have to say about it.

I present this record of events to the People's Council. Inside, you will find details of our recent siege of Piren's Bluff, as accounted by witnesses of the conflict. You will also find details of an unsanctioned mission of my own design, which I personally found to be a prudent measure in order to perhaps discourage how Andoran's policies might be viewed by those on the outside. I do not judge whether to regret or congratulate myself for these actions. Such things I will leave for history to decide.
