Their son, Kapono, took over the family business when they retired. He and his wife had one child, a son, Kapono Koa Kahana. While his great grandchildren Parker (11 yrs old) and Alana (8 yrs old) were visiting, he was giving them windsurfing lessons in the shallow waters by the shore while his son, Kapono, was giving a group of tourists a windsurfing lesson farther out and his wife, Alana, and his granddaughter-in-law were in the shallow water with his great grandchildren (2 year old twins), Keanu and Kiana. A rare appearance of a great white shark turned to tragedy quickly. The shark emerged from the water and bit the legs off one of the tourists getting the windsurfing lesson. His son yelled at the tourists to swim to shore as fast as they could and doved towards the shark and the injured man. Kapono grabbed part of the injured tourist's broken board and started to bash the shark with hit, hoping to buy some time for help to come to aid the injured man. Upon seeing what was unfolding with his son, Koa, told Parker to get his sister to the beach and well away from the water, then used his windsurf board to swim out towards his son. As he passed the tourists (sans one) his son was giving a lesson to swim past him, he told them to make sure everyone gets out and stays away from the water until the all-clear was given. Frantic, his arms and legs getting tired, Koa got to his son in time to see him heroically push the injured tourist out of the way of the shark's next attack, but it was a mortal sacrifice, Koa knew. He got to the injured tourist and placed him on his surfboard, then picked up the broken board his son had been using to try to buy the tourist time to get to shore. Lifeguards were on their way to help via jet skis. The lifeguards got there in time to rescue the injured tourist but not in time to save Koa from joining his son in sacrificing himself to save others.
