"Yes...my feathered friend here is quite intelligent, and I do appreciate your candor today. If you can think of anything else, let the watch know and they can relate it to us I'm sure. Please have a pleasant rest of your day."

"I'm afraid I don't know anyone who would want Svans dead.

There is some business that we had left to complete, I suppose I would need to discuss with the Watch retrieving my proceeds after this investigation is over.

The only thing I would surmise is thieves who might want his art or perhaps his books, he had pieces of value in both collections. I'm not an investigator in Inquisitive but that's what I would look at if I were in charge of the investigation".

He pauses, "Do you know if there will be a funeral? I didn't know him well but I would want to pay my respects to his family, one professional to another".

He seems in grim humour about hearing of Svans death but isn't particularly distraught.

”It is undetermined at this time if or when he will have a funeral. He had no known family and his murder investigation will delay it if nothing else. At least until the guilty person is identified. I will pass your concerns on to the watch. Hopefully they will can send notice if he is indeed given any sort of rites. Do you happen to know what religion the man might have looked to? Nothing was obvious of that nature in his home.”

In order to save time, Gauntlet will summarize why they are there, and simply ask if he might know anything about it, or someone else who might have more knowledge of the dead man and who might wish him harm, if anyone...

We are assisting the Sharn watch in a certain matter, and our inquiries have led us here. We were told he frequented the Art Temple most days?"

No point of cutting off our investigation lines here until we read the book and talk to the artist I think. We can meet back with the others later as agreed once we complete our work.

”No trail could mean they teleported away. Can anyone trace that kind of magic?”

Turning to Brennus, Gauntlet points at the book.

”The Talenta Plains? How could the land of the native halflings and giant lizards have anything to do with this murder? Unless the person’s name we are looking for is written in the book somewhere… We can talk to the painter if we run out of leads. I don’t see an artist killing this man without leaving some sort of clue, although its possible he just might know more about the man killed in general.”

He looks out the doorway to the balcony where the man fell.

”We will have to earn our pay on this job it seems: No easy task. Hopefully our compatriots will have better luck.”

For now, I suggest Gauntlet, Brennus, and Ratchet head to the man's work to investigate, and then Erix and Frank (with Broulnindre), see what they can find out about the Circus. We can meet at Siduk's office for the results on the test we had done for the white powder, before or after we split up.

Nodding his head, Gauntlet agrees that the day is finished.

”I need to get back to Mickey. He will need me when he wakes. Maybe we should divide into two teams tomorrow and jumpstart the investigation as soon as possible. One group goes to this guy’s location of work, and the others investigate this ‘circus’ he was involved with years ago. I’m assuming this was back during the Last War of course. Then we meet back here, get the test results, and compare notes. Let’s start at Mickey’s tomorrow morning and decide groups then. An hour after sunrise perhaps?”

Gauntlet disagrees.

"Safe is relative. Just becasue there has not been any obvious murders does not mean crime or other injustices do not go on here. There is incentive to keep that kind of thing here out of sight and unnoticed. Such a disturbance like this and in this area will be noted by many, especially the local criminal elements who hate such notoriety to their 'turf.' Too many variables right now. We need more clues other than 'flour' on the floor. Is it flour? We should test the substance to be sure too. No need to assume and get caught unaware at a later date."

Gauntlet glances at the perched Raven for only a moment and turns to follow the officer back to his office. Once there he collects the fee received, and takes out a small note-book. He then notes the job description, time, date, and payment terms.

He then turns to the sergeant.

”Thank you. Any direct information on the dead man yet? A name? Who was he? Did he have a job, or anything significant on a daily basis? Does he use his balcony regularly?”

Once nothing is found, Gauntlet will release the energy in his sword and it will disappear with a flash.

He then will head back downstairs and back to the rest of the group. Once he sees the local warforged Sharn officer, he will nod to him.

"There was no obvious evidence up in the apartment of any intruder or a scuffle. I touched nothing and returned here once I felt I could not do more up there. I spoke with a neighbor who heard something, but she claimed not to know anything beyond that. I can note that personally I saw while walking through the street earlier, this dead fellow throw up his hands and fall backwards onto one of his chairs. To my note, and why I probably remember, it appeared to be a good thing! If he had fallen forward, he would have gone over the balcony. That means he might have jumped or was pushed after he was initially attacked. I suggest speaking with the corpse immediately. My guess is the attacker was disguised or invisible, so the corpse might not be able to reveal much, but it is still important to try."

What you will probably 'see' Gauntlet NOTE:

Like most warforged, Gauntlet looks like a large man made from rock, various metals, and wood. However, since he was designed for front-line fighting, his bulk is slightly higher and his metal compositions have a darker coloration from all the adamantine added to it.

His head is slightly bulkier as well with what appears to be a helmet-like fixture over a skull-like face, and with his unique symbol glowing prominently on his forehead. Strangely enough his particular symbol resembles a stylized four-fingered hand held upright, which is very unusual for a warforged symbol, and is where Gauntlet gets his name from.

In the end, the most unique characteristic of Gauntlet is his disquieting aura of "wrongness." This effect is not visual, but can cause normal animals to react badly to his presence, and anyone with the ability to see magic or detect auras finds Gauntlets to be very odd and almost disturbing to look at. Even normal people can sometimes get the "HeeBee-GeeBees" around him. Certain supernatural creatures and aberrations occasionally find Gauntlet fascinating, but only because his unusual "nature" seem to draw them like flies to rotting meat.

(Character Note: Think of a cross between Frankenstein's monster, Data from Star Trek, and 'Thing' from the Addams Family and you kinda get the get the idea of what Gauntlet is really like.)

Looking over at the unconscious Mickey, Gauntlet stares for a few moments before he answers.

”I will, but I can not stay out too late. I will need to return in case Micky wakes up sick…or worse.”

His voice has a quality or undertone of dedication and thankfulness mixed with a hint of fear and inevitability.

Heck, I never even had a company name that was ever any good".[/b]

Thinking on Mickey's statement, Gauntlet has a strange idea.

"Why don't we run the agency as a group? Create a 'fake' owner and put him down on paper as the one in charge, but he just never shows his face. Only contacts people with official sealed missives. Or even magical projections? We are already considered a bit of an oddity for what we do, so it might make sense for a rich 'benefactor' to 'buy' Mickey out and make him a consultant, and put the rest of us to work solving problems for hard gold. We could call ourselves something like, 'Petrie's Problem Solvers' or something alliterative like that, with Petrie being the new owners name. Gives us a layer of anonymous protection...Especially if we say he doesn't live in Sharn, or if we say he's affiliated with a Dragonmarked house, but never say which. That would make it harder figure out or to track down. Sounds weird, I know..."

Shaking his head, the strange warforged known colloquially as ‘Gauntlet’ apparently disagrees with Mickey.

”Where would I start? You have all the connections, contacts, and intangible resources in your head. In the end, I’m just a strange monstrous remnant of the Last War: A reminder to most that my kind were created specifically for a horrible time that is finally over, and now best forgotten. No one would really trust me in the end. You Mickey can, and have, earned people’s trust again. You cannot afford to fall down inside a bottle again. I’m afraid you might not find your way out.”

Just to warn you all, this next week and next weekend is really busy for me (my son is graduating 5th grade this week and then he flies out to stay with his mom for the summer on Saturday) for various reasons (work is killing me too) so I may be slow in posting or replying for the next 7 days or so.

So...two main spell-casters, a part spellcaster/melee type (Gauntlet), and whatever Ratchet wants to be in the end (ranged guns or melee with his 'suit')?

I can live with that.

Understood.

I vaguely remember the Essence Node. Can you send me the stats on that again?

Oh, and I guess I prefer “normal” approach to loot. I find ABP a bit too much of an abstraction - I do think it is a good system for games that are less granular, but I don’t get that vibe from this game.

I agree. ABP can be appropriate sometimes, but I'm not a huge fan of it.

Gauntlet would simply save his money and use it for helping Mickey P and look to the future.

There is also a Manual/Tome I mentioned in my last PM to you GM. Let me know what you think on that?

Special Abilities
--------------------
Arcane Bond (Ring) (1/day) (Sp) Use object to cast any spell in your spellbook 1/day. Without it, Concentration required to cast spells (DC20 + spell level).
Arcane Training [1] Half-elves occasionally seek tutoring to help them master the magic in their blood. Half-elves with this racial trait have only one favored class and it must be an arcane spellcasting class. They can use spell trigger and spell completion items for their favored class as if 1 level higher. This racial trait replaces the multitalented racial trait.
Cypher Magic [2] You cast spells from scrolls at +1 caster level higher than the scroll’s caster level. This benefit extends to scrolls that you have created. In addition, you gain a +2 bonus on caster level checks made to activate a scroll with a higher caster level than your own.
Divination Diviners are masters of remote viewing, prophecies, and using magic to explore the world.
Dreamspeaker [1] A few elves have the ability to tap into the power of sleep, dreams, and prescient reverie. Elves with this racial trait add +1 to saving throw DCs for spells of the divination school and sleep effects they cast. In addition, elves with a Charisma of 15 or higher may use dream once per day as a spell-like ability (caster level is equal to the elf's character level). This racial trait replaces the elven immunities racial trait.
Elf Blood Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race.
Enchantment You must spend 2 slots to cast spells from the Enchantment school.
Forewarned +1 (Su) You can always act in the surprise round even if you fail to make a Perception roll to notice a foe, but you are still considered flat-footed until you take an action. In addition, you receive a bonus on initiative checks equal to 1/2 your wizard level (minimum +1). At 20th level, anytime you roll initiative, assume the roll resulted in a natural 20.
Low-Light Vision Characters with low-light vision have eyes that are so sensitive to light that they can see twice as far as normal in dim light. Low-light vision is color vision. A spellcaster with low-light vision can read a scroll as long as even the tiniest candle flame is next to him as a source of light. Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day.
Necromancy You must spend 2 slots to cast spells from the Necromancy school.
Scribe Scroll You can create a scroll of any spell that you know.
Wary [1] Many half-elves have spent their long lives moving from place to place, often driven out by the hostility of others. Such experiences have made them wary of others' motivations. Half-elves with this trait gain a +1 racial bonus on Sense Motive and Bluff checks. This racial trait replaces the keen senses racial trait.

Physical Description
--------------------
Born to the streets without the strength to bully his way to the best food and places to sleep, Pluck has always been a titch on the short side of average and weighed a smidge over malnourished. He’s found it to be more of an advantage than disadvantage though because he tends to be easily overlooked or better still forgotten, especially when he’s garbed in his usual dockworker shirt and breeches with an oiled hooded cloak to protect against the foul Riddleport weather. Pluck’s face is that of a boyish Varisian, a patchy dark beard struggles to find root on his cheeks and chin. The only giveaway to his elven heritage are the longer, pointed ears that are usually hidden away under hood and hair. The tools of his trade are also subtle and unremarkable. His arcane bond is a plain steel band on his right hand while he keeps his spell components in a simple leather pouch on his left side.

Personality
--------------------
While his appearance is indistinct, Pluck's personality can be memorable. The half-elf is extremely bright and often struggles to hold back a snarky observation unless he’s playing a part, something Tammerhawk has been trying to instill in the young man. Still, he has a tendency to get excited and when he does, words, thoughts and observations come spilling out in a barely contained torrent, often overcoming the listener through sheer force of intellect. In the last couple years, research into the Cyphergate and immersion into Tammerhawk’s plots have instilled a love of the complex in Pluck. He has a tendency to overplan, but gets a thrill from feeling a plan or discovery fall into place, a magical feeling for Pluck akin to an addict’s high.

History
--------------------
Born a few years after Cromarcky’s rise to Overlord, Pluck grew up on the streets of Riddleport never knowing mother or father, but always having a different answer when someone asks. Lacking the strength to run with gangs relying on muscle to get their way, Pluck gravitated toward simple cons at a young age, often drawing other children into his schemes for food or a few quick coins. After a few uncomfortable run-ins with Croat’s thugs and Mescher’s gendarmes, the young half-elf found that the fattest pigeons came right off the boat. Gravitating to the Wharf District, Pluck found he had a gift for the tongues of Riddleport’s many visitors and a little rum or rotgut was sure to make a mark more talkative and make it easy to set up a quick con as long as he made sure to avoid any favorites of the crimelord’s capps.

It wasn’t until after Tammerhawk became leader of the Order of Cyphers that the half-elf gave more than a second thought to the fancyboys. There he was about to make a quick coin off a bridge monkey who’d never played ‘follow the lady’ when one of Tammerhawk’s ‘boys’ walks right up from the far side of the room and turns over the right card adding that he’s a smart kid and when he’s ready to move up from mere parlor tricks, he ought to visit the Cypher Lodge handing him a slip of paper with a pattern of runes. Spitting mad, Pluck crumpled up the paper and sprung up planning to at least bloody a nose in a fight he would surely lose when he realized the man had disappeared. Later that night he got a second surprise, finding the same piece of paper, uncrumpled in his pocket in place of the copper he’d kept aside for a meat pie for dinner.

Ready to crumple the paper for a second time, Pluck took a closer look...and then an even closer one. The night was lost as he was consumed by the puzzle dashing through the city dodging gendarmes to examine obelisks and runestones that he had never given a second thought to before. Clinging to a precarious perch over the harbor from the Cyphergate, he put the last piece together under the rosy light of dawn and Pluck felt a thrill that not even the best executed con had ever produced. The Bishop had his own surprise when he found a triumphant and somewhat smug Pluck waiting for him in the Cypher Lodge’s parlor that morning.

Pluck has spent the last three years splitting time between the Cypher Lodge and his own confidence games in the city at large. Quickly ensconced in the shadowy side of the Order, Tammerhawk pegged Pluck early on as someone smart and charismatic enough to be dangerous if he ever reached his potential and guided him onto a path where he could be certain that would never happen. Keep the promising ones close...or make sure they cut their throats is one tenet in the Speaker’s personal creed. Tammerhawk and his capp, The Bishop, have made sure to keep Pluck a little on the periphery of their plans for Riddleport, but this gambling tournament that Saul has cooked up at the Gold Goblin Gambling Hall sounds like just the thing to drop a young confidence artist/wizard right into the middle of.

Relationship to Riddleport
--------------------
Riddleport is home to Pluck and while he sometimes wonders what lies beyond the city, he also doesn't know any other place. He knows the gangs—who is safe to tweak and who he shouldn't begin to mess with. He knows the people of the city—and it has to be said that there might be a small soft spot there providing a reason he typically picks on strangers and the unkind. Sure this strange blot in the sky might be something new, but it will probably be part of the landscape before long. He enjoys working with the Cyphermages and wonders when Tammerhawk or another Cyphermage will co-opt him for a journey outside the city not realizing that the Speaker is reluctant to put a useful pawn such as Pluck at risk in the Varisian wilds.
