background:
Gaross Stonejaw called slagsun has lived with the shame of his father's deeds for nearly twenty years. Gaross's mother died of an illness, an illness that Gaross's father had begged the gods to heal. Gaross's father donated almost everything he owned to the temple of Torag in Highhelm but there were no clerics there with the ability to heal. The clerics at the temple did everything they could to heal Gaross's mother. A cleric with the healing gift was called for but Gaross's mother died before the cleric could arrive. Gaross's father was grief stricken. In his grief he blamed the gods for his wife's death. He got drunk one night shortly after his wife's death and broke into the temple of Torag at night. He destroyed the shrine of Torag with a sledge hammer and when an acolyte tried to stop him he killed the youngman. Gaross's father was tried and found guilty not only of murder, and desecrating Torag's temple. His beard was shaved and he was exiled. Ashamed of his actions Gaross's father set off for the Hold of Belkzen to redeem himself by killing Orcs, but Gaross's father was a stonemason not a warrior and was killed before he could achieve anything worthy of redemption.
Gaross was lucky the stonemason that he was apprenticed too was a kind understanding dwarf and didn't cast the tainted apprentice out. He honored his word and trained in his trade. When Gaross became a journeyman stonemason he gave the young dwarf a job even though it cost him customers to have a tainted dwarf working for him.
Gaross wants to redeem his family, but he isn't a warrior. The journey to the new world is his chance. If he can be part of the building of a new dwarven kingdom in the new world maybe it will be seen as a deed worth of removing the stain from his name.
