Lantern Initiate Benefit:

While you hold your lantern, its burning light leaves secrets no place to hide. You can light or extinguish your lantern as a free action once each turn with nothing but a thought, which has the concentrate trait. The lantern shines bright light out to 20 feet and dim light out 20 feet further; this has the evocation, light, and magical traits (the counteract level against magical darkness is equal to half your level rounded up). The lantern's magical light attempts to reveal the unseen. You and your allies in the lantern's area of bright light gain a +1 status bonus to visual Perception checks to notice anything that is also within the bright light, and a +1 status bonus to checks to Recall Knowledge against creatures within the bright light, as the light exposes their true natures. During exploration, even if you aren't Searching, the GM rolls a secret check for you to find traps, environmental hazards, haunts, and secrets (such as secret doors). The GM rolls each time a given hazard or secret comes within 20 feet of you and within the lantern's bright light. These effects have the divination, magical, and revelation traits.

Background:
Garidan Hemlock's life began in the harsh confines of a Hobgoblin settlement, where he was born into slavery. From a tender age, he was subjected to the whims of his captors, forced to toil under the oppressive gaze of Hobgoblin overseers. The settlement was a grim place, filled with the sounds of clanging metal and the shouts of soldiers, where hope was a distant memory for those like him. Garidan learned quickly that survival meant obedience, but deep within him, a flicker of defiance burned. He often listened to the stories of the older slaves, tales of freedom and adventure that ignited his imagination and fueled his desire to escape the chains that bound him.

As he grew older, Garidan became more resourceful, using his time to observe the routines of his captors and the layout of the settlement. Finally, after years of planning, the opportunity for escape presented itself during a chaotic festival when the Hobgoblins were preoccupied with their revelry. Seizing the moment, Garidan fled under the cover of darkness, navigating the treacherous terrain surrounding the settlement. He ran for hours, driven by the fear of being caught and the hope of a new life. Eventually, he reached the coast and stumbled upon a small fishing boat. With no time to waste, he commandeered the vessel, setting sail into the unknown, where the sea welcomed him with open arms.

Upon arriving in Otari, Garidan found a stark contrast to the oppressive settlement he had escaped. The town was alive with laughter and music, yet he quickly realized that freedom came with its own challenges. To make a living, he took on the unwanted job of the night watch, a position often overlooked by others. While the townsfolk slumbered peacefully, Garidan patrolled the streets, lantern in hand, ever vigilant against the dangers that lurked in the shadows. The nights were long and filled with uncertainty, as he shouted warnings into the dark, unsure of what might be lurking just beyond the reach of his lantern's light. He had witnessed things that chilled him to the bone—shadows that moved unnaturally and whispers that sent shivers down his spine.

As the years passed, Garidan Hemlock transformed from a frightened slave into a formidable watchman, shaped by his past yet determined to forge a better future. The nightmares of his youth still haunted him, but they no longer held him captive. Instead, they fueled his resolve to stand guard against the darkness threatening to encroach upon Otari. With each passing night, he became more than just a watchman; he became a symbol of resilience and hope, a reminder that even in the face of despair, one could rise and protect others from the shadows that sought to consume them. In this new life, Garidan found purpose, proving that freedom was not merely the absence of chains, but the ability to stand tall against the darkness, ensuring that others could sleep soundly through the night. While everyone in Otari knew and respected him, barely anyone knew anything about him or even counted him among his friends. Though, anyone who stumbled upon him during a late night out, remembered him as a friendly, helpful guardian who will escort anyone home safely, if needed.
