Background:
The longest-ago memory Gareth can recall is of his grandfather, Biff. He told Gareth the most amazing stories of heroism, bravery, and brotherhood from times of the occupation of Gate Pass, when he was a young boy. Biff even swore to have seen Coaltongue himself! He sure looked the part of a battle-scarred veteran. He had raking scars across his hands that made them pretty much useless for any hard labor. He claimed to have been clawed by a war troll! Gareth held on to these stories, picturing himself planning insurgency and fighting the empire. His father, Jonas new the stories to only be delusions created to satisfy a terrible loss the old man had. Sadly, Jonas was killed when his plow fell upon him, and he was never able to tell Gareth the truth about the stories.

A year after his father's death, his grandfather died of pneumonia after wandering outside one winter night, in his delusions of epic fantasy. His mother, Rebecca, decided it to be best to move to the city and out of the countryside. There, she got a job as a tailor for a well-to-do businessman. Gareth took the death of his father and hero hard, but he still had a dream of defending Gate Pass from would conquerors, a dream he always put in an urn.

Two days later, Gareth was cleaning dishes after he and his mother had there morning meal when an authoritive sounding knock came from the door. His mother told him to answer it, and he quickly walked to the entry; from the sound of the knock, this person should not be kept waiting. As he opened the door, the first thing he saw was a sword hilt followed by a strong arm, serious face, and a cheap pot. What was a man of this stature doing with an old pot? The man smiled, wiping the harsh look from his features instantly. "You must be Gareth," he said. "Once a year I retrieve one of these urns. This year, it was yours."

The man introduced himself to Gareth and Rebecca as Sir Martyn from the Gate Pass calvary. He gave Gareth an offer he could not refuse. He would be given a job as a stable boy for some of the Local military horses. In return, the calvaryman would give him a few lessons in the evening. This arangement continued for about ten years of light training. There were only a few snags. One, Gareth had no horse. Two, he had no equipment.

However, they both had motivation and ingenuity. A horse was bought from a farmer's son that did not want to carry on the trade when he passed. Luckily, it was of good breed and fairly young. When Gareth first looked on the beast, he remembered the death of his father and said, "You expect me to get on that boulder?" Thus, the horse got its name.

Equipment was scavenged from well balanced tree limbs and scraps of metal. Gareth trained and was instructed nearly every night for two hours at least, and Martyn did this without asking for anything in return. He would only say that he was fulfilling his obligation to Gate Pass, its citizens, and its tradition. Following in the ways of his mentor, Gareth began his service to his city through doing his best to make a wish come true every year with marginable success.

PRESENTLY - Gareth has already scrounged up enough money to outfit himself.

As a coming army of a begrudging nation is marching to Gate Pass, his home, Gareth dawns his gear and mounts his trusty steed, Boulder. Nervous sweat can be seen trickling down his brow and off his nose. He does not wipe it away; he believes acknowledging it would prove his fear. He has decided to join the frontlines when the battle begins. Gareth is just about to urge Boulder forward when the door opens behind him with a creak. Standing in the doorway is an elderly woman wearing a dirty dress of a deep blue, his mother. Tears streak the dust on her face; it is smeared in places where it was wiped off. "Gareth," she sobs, "why must you do this?" Gareth looks down on this pitiful soul and sees the remnants of sorrow that can erupt again at any moment. He does not answer immediately; out of thought or contempt, it is hard to tell.

Gareth answers calmly, "I love you more than anything in the world. My love for this city is next to nothing but you and Sir Martyn. I cannot bear to allow any enemy inside any of these gates without attempting to stop them. I am bound to this place and to you by my loyalty. It is my way, my principles. I wish it did not have to come to this, but it has." The woman's eyes begin to water, and she starts to bawl.
"What if you can help in some other way?" she pleads through gasping breaths. "You are not experienced enough for the task you set yourself!" Gareth lets himself slide out of the saddle and next to her. He hugs her gently as not to pinch her with his armor.
"Do not worry. I promise we will all still be here next year and the next." The woman's eyes light up at this; all sorrow is replaced with the light of hope.
"Do not leave yet," she says. Then, she hustles back into the building. Awhile goes by before she returns with a small urn, ink bottle, quill, and parchment cradled in her arms. A large smile breaks across her face. "There may be only one last new year," exclaims the lady, "make it count."
Understanding dawns on Gareth, and he takes up the items and says, "I will, Mother."

Description and Personality:
Gareth is very loyal to his friends and allies. This is a good trait, usually. However, he does not always act wisely when defending the honor of those he cares for. Loyalty is of the utmost importance to him. Any time he does not protect his friends from either bodily harm, slander, or anything else, he feels he has failed them. He is only quick to anger against those woh would harm his friends. This may end up getting him into trouble. Unless, his friends can convince him against it. He still thinks of his granfathers stories, and attempts to make them pale before his heroic deeds and loyalty.

Gareth sports a tuft of short brown hair that ends a centimeter above his eyes. It ocassionally sticks up in places without him noticing. His face is soft, and his blue eyes have a sparkle of innocent youth. His nose is short and rounded. His eyebrows are slightly bushy, and his chin has short stubble upon it. He is about 5'2'' and 140lbs, but he appears much taller while atop Boulder.
