Kappi:

It takes Kappi some time to find the black dragonkin – he asks about in several places and is finally directed to a set of barracks at the base of one of Spurhorn's walls, where he finds Abonzeaux relaxing with a book.

Happy to see the young Varisian, he listens to the request with interest. As it happens, he says in his soft tone, I have been granted a few days' leave and am available to do as you ask. I will do this thing.

Ali:

Ali finds the silver dragonkin in a tavern frequented by the soldiers of Spurhorn, enjoying a quiet drink.

Tecde appears legitimately surprised to see Ali and is certainly caught off guard by her request. She studies the elf's face a moment, then drains her cup and replies. When first we met, Golarian, I was following the orders of my commanding officer.

Tecde pauses, searching for words. During our fight, I witnessed your strength in magic and might, and was honored to serve. Now you honor me with this request.

The silver dragonkin arises. I will bear you on this mission, and back again, she says solemnly. But please understand, I do not fight without orders. Or self-preservation.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Nevra cocks her head slightly to one side. Not directly, I suppose, she says, thoughtful a moment, but Yrax has turned a great many dragonkin against each other, for no other reason than his own selfish need for power. I would see his tyranny defeated.

Shopping wish list: Ring of Feather Fall, Headband of Havoc, Deliquescent Gloves, Giant Fist Gauntlets, Gauntlets of the Weaponmaster

The first makes perfect sense in an environment where the populace rides on dragonkin, so we'll say those are something anyone can purchase.

I'm gonna say no to the last two for sure (not that you could pay for them, LOL

As for the headband and the gloves...

1d100 ⇒ 83 no
1d100 ⇒ 12 yes

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Vojtek, in his inimitable and direct fashion, asks for and is directed to Nevra.

Vojtek:
Nevra listens to the Northman's brusque entreaty for transport with a bemused expression.

You do continue to surprise, Vojtek with no partner, she says with a chuckle. Others might think this a foolhardy quest. But I tell you now, if your goal is to face the dragon warlord Yrax, then our ambitions are in concord. I will gladly bear you to this fight.

As for a quartermaster, we'll say you can find nearly anything mundane. Magic items would need to be determined on a case-by-case basis, but I'll roll behind the scenes for specific things.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Commander Pharmol looks thoughtful a moment. I believe we could spare dragonkin to get you to the Ningward side of the Parapet Mounts, he says. The decision is ultimately theirs, of course; you may ask them, but I will not order it.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Commander Pharmol continues to look confused, and Jarilne offers no counsel; but eventually the five party members convince him that they are accepting the mission.

It's a long trek, and that's after departing the Parapet Mounts, Pharmol states, returning to the map. Once you breach the divide, you'll need to make your way down to the South Aos, then make your way to the Aeosem in the mid-Drakelands before crossing the steppe to Vahara Glacier. He glances up. As I mentioned, some 75 leagues from here.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Commander Pharmol stares at Davosha long moment, as if trying to decipher what the Warlock is trying to say. LOL

When Ali chimes in, he says hesitantly, Sober kays...? Is...is that a yes?

With the party's confirmation, he stabs a finger toward the part labeled "Vahara Glacier". Ivoryglass is here, he says, then waves his hand across the expanse between the glacier's spot and the X indicating Spurhorn, some 75 leagues away, over open terrain. Treacherous.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

The party enjoys a drink or three with their dragonkin allies.

It is roughly two hours later when Commander Pharmol and his strike team arrives. The group is largely in high spirits, with word of Malesinder's fall along with the success of their own raid.

DC 22 Perception:
Commander Pharmol is pleased as well, though he clearly appears to be troubled by something unsaid.

The revelry goes on late into the Triaxian night, and the morning after is late indeed. It is nearly noon when the Golarions are summoned to the Spurhorn Council chamber, and only the Commader himself, without Amaranth, and Jarilne are there to meet them.

Your defeat of Malesinder is astounding, Commander Pharmol begins. When first we met, you mentioned seeking my beloved Keehu. He gestures to the two-headed eagle perched above the exit from the chamber. Truly, she is not mine to give – she remains here of her own free will, though I presume at least some of this is that I feed her. He smiles wryly. Still, provided no harm comes to her, I am only too happy to let her accompany you where she will, even should it be to your own world.

Commander Pharmol lets his eyes rest on Keehu a moment more, then turns to the table in the middle of the room. But there is much to discuss. We came across some ill winds in our skirmish. I would share them with you.

He presents a tattered map. The immediate threat to Spurhorn is removed, but we have learned this was but the first planned strike – a precursor to a much larger invasion of the entire Skyfire Mandate. He sighs as he gazes across the map.

The Drakeland army is under the claw of the dragon warlord Yrax, Jarilne says, her unseeing eyes closed as she speaks. But they serve out of fear, not loyalty. Should Yrax be felled, I foresee a great scattering of the soldiers into the wilds like so many snowflakes in the wind.

Commander Pharmol raises his eyes back to the party. You have done much for Spurhorn already, Golarions, he says, and we have no right to ask for more. And yet, you are the people best equipped to brave the halls of Ivoryglass and confront Yrax.

DC 15 WIS check OR DC 22 Arcana:

Sumira is grateful for Edward's translation, and calls another Traixian over. Get word to Commander Pharmol via sending that General Malesinder is no more.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

With the dragonkin and party back to full strength, the strike force jovially takes wing and makes its way back to Spurhorn.

Sumira and their partner Calissus, busily scanning the skies, point as your team comes into view.

Upon your landing, they approach expectantly. What news...?

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

It has been some time, but your goal here on Triaxus is to find the keys to the Hut so that you can follow Baba Yaga's trail. You have been told that Commander Pharmol has a two-headed eagle he was gifted as a pet.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Once the dragonkins and the party has healed up, all take stock at what they've managed to pull off.

We have severed the head of the attacking army! Nevra says with a grin. Malesinder will general no more!

Talsune nods emphatically. We have won a great victory, and at the heels of the one before it!

When the party is ready to set out, the dragonkin are eager to get word back to Commander Pharmol of the breath of this triumph.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Stabilizing Tecde drops the party out of initiative, so Edward can take the 10-15 minutes mentioned above to heal the party and dragonkin up.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Thanks for your patience, all.

I have at least one more week, maybe two, of my busy period, so fair warning.

Defeating the fearsome General Malesinder and her lieutenants earns the party 15,000 xp.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Yes, Edward and Ali both would conclude that skinning is taboo. Claiming a small token as a trophy from Malesinder would be appropriate, however. The Survival check is sufficient to successfully do so.

Davosh's healing hex stabilizes Tecde just in the nick of time (seriously, one point away!) and Edward picks up the oversized scimitar, which immediately shrinks to fit his hand. DC 28 Kn (arcana) to identify, due to the weapon being of Triaxian origin.

loot:
Malesinder also had a pair of armbands, and a necklace fashioned from what looks to be platinum in the shape of a dragon's head breathing a storm. Each of the other three fallen dragonkin have a similar, smaller necklace made from silver. The glaives are nonmagical, though they are masterwork.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Vojtek:
I like the idea; but we'll hold off on the reveal for the moment, because...

Votjek's grapple check is more than sufficient to keep Blue from flying. And when dragonkin can't fly, they fall. Kappi and Abonzeaux both land blows on Blue as the sudden descent begins.

falling: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 3) = 15 plus Vojtek falling on top: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7 Vojtek takes this second amount as well

Blue lands beneath the raging Northman, and Vojtek feels the spine snap beneath his hands (claws...?)!

The rest have had enough, and scatter!

Not yet dropping out of rounds, because Tecde is still bleeding out. Still, Vojtek gets a hero point for a spectacularly dumb maneuver that worked!

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Davosh:
That natural anti-Jeff gets Davosh the following:

Davosh feels as though the remaining dragonkin are close to the edge – two of theirs are down, including Malesinder; but three of yours are down, and they're thinking they can pull this out of the fire. One more felled, though, and they'll bolt.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Ali:
In the heat of battle, Ali can't get a good feel for what the dragonkin are thinking as they speak.

Edward's bow sends arrows that hit twice...but not a third time!

DC 24 Refl: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23 fail

Edward's bow, Davosh's lightning, and Ali's force missiles combine their powers to – finally – send General Malesinder crashing to the icy ground below!

The remaining dragonkin look at the fallen body of their general and talk a bit.

DC 12 Perception (no taking 10) plus speak Draconic:

Green: Malesinder is down! What do we do now?
Black: Should...should we flee?
Bronze: Do YOU want to explain to The Lord of the Howling Storm what happened to his favorite General here...?
Blue: ...good point.

Using Hero Points wrote:

Using Hero Points

Hero points can be spent at any time and do not require an action to use (although the actions they modify consume part of your character's turn as normal). You cannot spend more than 1 hero point during a single round of combat. Whenever a hero point is spent, it can have any one of the following effects.

Bonus: If used before a roll is made, a hero point grants you a +8 luck bonus to any one d20 roll. If used after a roll is made, this bonus is reduced to +4. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you are in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero points spent to aid another character grant only half the listed bonus (+4 before the roll, +2 after the roll).

Extra Action: You can spend a hero point on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action this turn.

Inspiration: If you feel stuck at one point in the adventure, you can spend a hero point and petition the GM for a hint about what to do next. If the GM feels that there is no information to be gained, the hero point is not spent.

Recall: You can spend a hero point to recall a spell you have already cast or to gain another use of a special ability that is otherwise limited. This should only be used on spells and abilities possessed by your character that recharge on a daily basis.

Reroll: You may spend a hero point to reroll any one d20 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.

Cheat Death: A character can spend 2 1 hero point to cheat death. How this plays out is up to the GM, but generally the character is left alive, with negative hit points but stable. The character can spend hero points in this way to prevent the death of a familiar, animal companion, eidolon, or special mount, but not another character or NPC.

Additions/Revisions:

* when a PC levels up, they get 1 hero point if they spent a hero point during the preceding level
* the GM may issue additional hero points for excellent visuals, creative solutions, etc., but no one will ever be able to have more than 1 hero point at any given time
* the GM will consider creative uses of hero points upon request

Neglected to update this for level 10, so everyone who spent a hero point during L9 (Ali, Davosh, Kappi) now is back to one. It also means, per the most recent post in Gameplay, Vojtek just spent his for an extra action to grapple.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Abonzeaux will have to charge to make an attack, so I'll allow that, but he'll only get one attack. I'll use the second d20 roll made as the confirm roll for the crit (which will, regrettably, not confirm).

Kappi and Abonzeaux charge back into the fray, the Varisian's shortsword missing the General but Abonzeaux's glaive having more success! One hit, 11 hp.

It takes every hit Vojtek and Nevra have in them, but the final swing from the Northman's greataxe fells White! It spirals to the grond, landing with a wet thud.

Kappi sneaks a potion and sheepishly looks at Abonzeaux as the latter alights next to him. Will take a Move action next round to mount.

Malesinder pounces on Edward and Talsune! In her hands is a huge, ice-blue scimitar that looks like it is forged from a solid block of ice. Malesinder holds it before her as she charges, the blade emitting a pale blue radiance. Edward only has enough time to marvel for a moment, though, as the blade swings at Talsune!!

92 total damage.

The final blow from Malesinder is enough to knock Talsune unconscious currently at -3!

LIKE THAT, YOU FOOLS! Malesinder snarls, locking eyes with Edward in triumph. I SHALL PICK THE FLESH FROM YOUR BONES WHEN YOU FALL!

The Blue dragonkin dutifully attacks Nevra, as Malesinder instructed.

Both Ali and Tecde fail their Reflex saves.

black Dragonkin AoO vs Ali AC 24 26: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24 since Ali didn't specify her blessing of fervor action, I'm going to give her the +2 to hit/+2 to AC, so this will MISS

FYI: the Fly check isn't necessary for this maneuver, and dragonkin don't roll to hit with the breath weapon because the opponent makes a saving throw.

White dragonkin DC 18 Refl: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 success for half

Nevra's cone of lightning strikes the foe, though they are able to dodge much of the effect! They do not avoid Vojtek's follow-up, however, as the great axe bites into the white dragonkin's flesh!

Bronze dragonkin DC 18 Refl: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 success for half

Abonzeaux's cone of acid strikes the foe, though they are able to avoid much of the caustic discharge.

Kappi launches himself from the saddle, much to Abonzeaux's shock and dismay – oh, Sumira and their partner Calissus will just kill me if anything happens to you! – but as he is unaccustomed to flying, his aim fails to account for the moving target Acrobatics check fails. He gets in a decent blow no sneak dice, though on his way down...though he also provokes an attack of opportunity from the opposing dragonkin...

AoO: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33

Dice rolls adjusted per Slack discussion. Edward is taking the extra attack from the blessing of fervor. The height and distance make the range to be in the second increment (geometry FTW!), but Edward's rolls are good enough that the additional –2 penalty doesn't much matter this time around.

Quick primer on flying combat:

* Link to Fly skill.
* Dragonkin have a 40' fly speed that reduces to 30' when mounted. Moving at less than half fly speed requires a fly check, as does hovering. Your dragonkin will make a DC 15 fly check to Hover automatically, but anything higher will need a roll.
* Ascending at a 45 degree angle or more costs double movement; descending at a 45 degree angel or more doubles your movement.
* You and your dragonkin each get a move action and a standard action. Keep in mind that the Fly skill may use up your dragonkin's move action.
* In order to attack another flier, you must match speed and altitude with them. Since flying creatures are considered to be in continuous motion, there are no "five foot steps", and any action that would provoke in 2D combat will also do so in 3D combat.
* Your dragonkin have the Flyby Attack feat, but you, as the rider, do not have the ability to take a standard action in the middle of your own move. You may Ready a standard action to trigger by your dragonkin's move.
* If you want to try something not covered in the above or under the Fly skill, let me know and we'll come up with something.

Edward:
Talsune gives a laugh. In time, Edward with no partner. One must leave the shell before one can spread one's wings.

All the same, Talsune does sharpen his turns a little more.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

The strike force sets off, the dragonkin all hugging closely to the ground so that no lookouts will spy them in the distance. Davosh and Liska follow along at the rear.

3d4 ⇒ (1, 3, 4) = 8

The sensation of flying is a feeling Ali will never forget – the sickening yawn in her stomach and the dizziness she gets looking at the ground below, though Tecde flies with careful regard for her rider.

Edward takes to the ride rather well, though he does not appear to enjoy the turns even with Talsune gently banking into them as they arise.

Kappi lets out a whoop of pure exhilaration before catching himself; he and Abonzeaux remain silent through the rest of the flight.

Vojtek, for his part, feels as though he is in a dream state, something stirring from his own shoulder as though wings might sprout forth at any moment. Nevra is not gentle in her path, swooping in and out of formation and letting the Northman feel the full effect of being airborne under a living creature.

Ali:
Tecde appears surprised by Ali's compliment. I...thank you, Golarion, they respond in Draconic. She lowers her head and motions for Ali to climb into the saddle, its material thin yet sturdy and conforming to Ali's body as though it was made for it.

Tecde appears to consider her next words carefully. I will bear you to this battle, she says at last, looking back at Ali and ruffling her wings a bit, and back again when we emerge victorious.

Edward:
Talsune grins at Edward's words, lowering his head so that Edward may climb on. The paladin mimics what he has seen, and swings his leg over into the saddle, finding it astonishingly form-fitting.

We shall be victorious together! Talsune says emphatically.

Kappi:
Sumira shows Kappi how to get into the saddle on Abonzeaux's back, finding it very comfortable despite his nervousness. The sable-toned dragonkin peers at Sumira, who whispers something in its ear and pats its head.

Turning to Kappi, Sumira says, You need not fear, Abonzeaux will bear you into the fight. It is what he has been trained for. For their part, Abonzeaux says nothing, though Kappi can sense the anxiety on the creature below him.

Vojtek:
So formal, all of a sudden! Nevra says with a laugh. But then I suppose I was as well. Nevra lowers her head and guides Vojtek into the saddle on her back. The material is supple, thin yet stalwart; and Vojtek finds it comfortable as he sets himself into it.

You should hang on tightly Nevra says, for this battle shall test us all and it would not do for you to fall off of a dragonkin. What sort of bond could form then, hmm?

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Commander Pharmol nods. Prepare yourselves. We set out at midnight.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

At the appointed hour, Commander Pharmol addresses the assembled coterie astride Amarenth, in full battlefield attire.

Our assault shall provide you cover, though perhaps only until the ruse is discovered. Strike fast, strike hard, and strike true. I leave it to the trustworthy Sumira and their partner Calissus to find you suitable means to traverse the mountains. With this, Amarenth takes flight, along with a couple dozen dragonkin and riders – Bescaylie and their partner Efrixes among them.

Sumira gazes after, a look of longing on their face, then with a sigh they turn back to the party. Well. Let's get you ready to go. I am to remain here to defend Spurhorn. With a whirl, the alabaster-clad Sumira turns to a collection of dragonkin and begins to look them over.

Ali:
Ali sees Sumira, speaking to a silver dragonkin, point to Ali. The silver dragonkin nods and approaches the elf. I have been directed by Sumira and their partner Calissus to bear you as part of this assault. I am Tecde and I will do as my commanding officer says.

Davosh:
Sumira and their partner Calissus speak to Davosh personally. We can see that you fly already, Davosh and their partner Liska. We shall not seek a dragonkin to bear you into this fight.

Edward:
Talsune approaches Edward. It would honor me if you were to allow me to act as your bearer in this offensive, Edward with no partner.

Kappi:
Sumira and their partner Calissus calls Kappi over to their side, where the stand next to a nervous black dragonkin. Kappi with no partner, this is Abonzeaux, who will act as your bearer on this mission. Abonzeaux says nothing, but looks at Kappi with some apprehension.

Vojtek:
Nevra steps in front of the Northman. It may seem bold, she says with uncharacteristic seriousness, but I would join you on this mission, if you will permit me to act as your bearer, Vojtek of Golarion with no partner.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Edward:
Bescaylie and Efrixes both seem to appreciate the prayer. The rider silently mouths her thanks as the discussion continues.

Commander Pharmol nods at Davosh's observation. Then you would have reasons beyond lending another hand for this, Davosh and their partner Liska, he says.

You'll need wings, he continues, which is a phrase you've heard before.

Five-star Hound of Tindalos. Er, GM. Whatever. | RoW Encounter Map |

Bescaylie pulls Edward aside.

Edward:
Zusk and their partner Herjan were among our losses during the siege, she says, fighting back tears. They fell in defense of the Spurhorn central tower.
