Okay, I think you've probably guessed that this is coming, but I'm going to make it official. I'm going to close this game tonight. I've been struggling with burnout and need to step away for a while.

I'm so sorry to do this to the rest of you. You've all made some amazing characters.

Best of luck in your future games.

Zaranna:
Moving to the closest pool, you see more tiny bioluminescent creatures within it which appear to be the source of the glowing from the pools. You're not entirely sure if the water is safe to drink, however.

Zv15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Squeezing through the narrow opening, you continue on your way. If not for Cardrens torch, it would be completely dark. Several long minutes pass as the corridor twists and turns until up ahead bluish glow becomes visible. Cautiously pushing on you eventually come to a gigantic cavern, its ceiling covered with thousands of bioluminescent insects, mimicking a clear night sky. A few pools of water glow with the brightness of a full moon night, providing just enough light that the two humans can see without issue. Stalagmites of various sizes crop up from the floor. Surprisingly, the air is like that near a freshwater spring, crisp and refreshing.

Continuing along your way, you finally reach Shaft thirty-seven. Cautiously moving down the shaft, you quickly find a natural crevasse leading down a dark natural corridor.

Anyone wanting the diplomatic route?

@ Alric - Yes, this would be a Recall Knowledge roll

Alric:
You cannot determine why Cardren is so thirsty. There's nothing wrong with him physically. Perhaps it's either psychological or magical in nature?

Cardren:
You get the feeling that something the Mephits are doing when they hit you is causing your unnatural thirst.

20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

29: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

@ Alric - You forgot the MAP for the second attack. It doesn't matter for this particular instance as it still with the -4, just reminding you for future rolls.

While the Ranger's strikes did a rather decent amount of damage, the last Mephit was still not dead.

With absolute fear in its eyes, the Mephit sank into the stone floor and disappeared completely.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@ Zaranna - Yes, success = half damage

Elyana's spell caused both Mephits to shake violently as the electricity struck each in the chest and spread throughout their bodies. Double Crit fail

The Oracle's first arrow completely shot through the Mephit that sprayed pebbles at her and the Sorceress, dropping and disintegrating it. Taking careful aim at the other one engaging with Alric, she fired her second arrow and completely removed its head, pinning it to the wall. The decapitated body fell to nothingness immediately afterward.

Cardren - Reminder, Trip has the Attack Trait, so MAP applies. As I just looked this up and realized it now, I will not calculate it for this set. But do keep it in mind for the future.

As Cardren knocked one of the little bastards on its ass, the other one nimbly dodges his attempt. Unfortunately, he lost his balance and ended up fallen himself. Prone due to Crit Fail on the Trip attack Kicking out at the one he missed, the Monk pummeled his target to dust. Even with the -2 from Prone, you still hit it both times.

One left, that's the one that Cardren knocked down.

Round 2:
Cardren (Prone), Elyana, Alric, Zaranna, Mephits (Concealed vs Alric and Cardren)

Secret Squirrel:

M BW 1d4 ⇒ 1

M4R 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

M3R 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The mephit Cardren attempted to trip barely managed to stay on its feet. Which seemed to work to it benefit as it's off balance state caused the monk to miss his mark.

That one, as well as another, attempted to beat Cardren down with their tiny fists.

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Bludgeoning

The injured one missed all together, but the other one landed two solid blows.

Meanwhile, the other two moved passed towards the pair of elves. One was suddenly distracted as Alric came out of nowhere with a sword swing thatm while missed, got its attention.

Using the opening provided by the Ranger's miss, the little bastard managed to punch Alric in the side twice.

The remaining one continued on an blasted both Elyana and Zaranna with its pebbly breath.

Despite the little bastard being such a larger target, only Zaranna's final arrow struck true. Obliterating it entirely.

Alric moved up and slit his blade up the entirety of the Mephits torso. If the damned things bled, the ranger was certain it would be doing so profusely. (Critical Hit) Regardless, it crumbled to nothingness.

Not too sure what actions you used other than Stride. If you did Stride, Strike, Strike, then you have one action left.

The remaining creature shook its head to rid itself of the stars Cardren caused and lashed out at him.

◆ Strike 1 vs Cardren: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Cardren - You forgot the Flat Check.

Cardren Attack 2 Flat Check vs DC 5: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Cardren Attack 3 Flat Check vs DC 5: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Well, at least the one that failed was the one that missed anyway.

The first punch hit the Mephit square in the jaw, causing its head to reel back. The sudden shift in stance caused Cardrens eyes to lose focus for a moment, making him miss his next swing. He quickly readjusted and planted his knee in the center of its torso.

Round 1:

Zaranna, Alric, Elyana, Cardren, Earth Mephits (Concealed from Alric and Cardren)

Secret Squirrel:

Mephit 2 (Left, Enlarged, Clumsy 1, Stunned 1): -14
Mephit 3 (Right, Enlarged, Clumsy 1): -12

Despite being the ones doing the ambushing, the Mephits were caught completely off guard. The one on the right took the full force of the spell while the other one, its feet still in the stone, took the electrical arc straight to the head. Which blew it apart in a shower of pebbles, shortly followed by the rest of the body as it collapsed.

Suddenly, three large Mephits came out of the stone floor. One on either side of the group and one ahead blocking the way. Each one is within 20 feet of you.

Round 1:

Zaranna, Alric, Elyana, Cardren, Earth Mephits (Concealed from Alric and Cardren)

Zaranna's First arrow pinned the Mephit's head to the cave wall. It to deteriorated into tiny pebbles then nothing.

@ Cardren - You only need to roll a flat check for Attacks, Spells, and similar effects.

Moving up to the one he was pummeling earlier, the monk punched so hard he heard a distinct crack from the neck-breaking. Its limp body fell apart similar to the one that Elyana dropped.

Another one bites the dust.

Cardren: You have one action left.

Round 3:

Cardren, Zaranna, Alric, Elyana, Mephits (Concealed vs Cardren and Alric due to Dim Light)

Secret Squirrel:

Mephit 3: -14

@ Elyana - It stepped away from you, so you would have needed to Stride up to it. So we'll negate that miss and say it was a stride action.

Stepping up to enlarged elemental, the sorceress's first strike cut so deep she's certain a normal creature would have been disemboweled (Critical Hit: Terrible Cut - x3 damage). Still, it caused the creature in front of her to clutch at its new wound allowing her to swing around and remove its head entirely. The decapitated body fell and crumbled into thousands of tiny pebbles, which then further disintegrated into nothingness.

Round 3:

Cardren, Zaranna, Alric, Elyana, Mephits (Concealed vs Cardren and Alric due to Dim Light)

Secret Squirrel:

Mephit 2 (Front): -10
Mephit 3 (Wall): -14

Okay, since I can't find a rule on this specifically, I'm going to rule that you need to roll the flat check for each attack. My reasoning being that one bad roll possibly negating three attacks is too problematic. That said, I'll roll the other two for Cardren this time.

Cardren Flat Check 1 vs DC 5: 1d20 ⇒ 1
Cardren Flat Check 2 vs DC 5: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Due to a trick of the light, the monk's last kick was the only one that connected.

Elyana noticed that the large gash she caused seemed to be slowly starting to heal up.

The large Mephit took a couple of swings at the elf in front of it then stepped back.

◆ M1 Strike vs Elyana: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
◆ M1 Strike vs Elyana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

The Mephit in front of Cardren tried to punch him again.

◆ M2 Strike vs Cardren: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
◆ M2 Strike vs Cardren: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The little bastard then hopped back.
◆ Stride back 20 feet

The one on the wall, not seeing Alric anymore, moved over and tried to punch Cardren in the back.

◆ Strike to Cardren

Secret Squirrel:

Mephit 1 (Back) (Enlarged): -8
Mephit 2 (Front): -10
Mephit 3 (Wall): -14

Technically, rolling a 1 or being -10 below the DC decreases your success by one step (Usually resulting in a Crit Fail). The opposite is true of rolling a 20 or being +10.

Unfortunately, the oracle's arrows failed to find their mark.

Alric completely vanished from sight (except for Cardren) as his cloak absorbed what little light there was in the tunnel. However this new ability threw his senses off making him momentarily loose sight of the Mephit. I'm still allowing you to hide as you failed the flat check. So for all intents and purposes, you're Undetected against everyone except for Cardren, but he can barely see you.

Elyana's blade gashed deep into the Mephits flesh, a wound that on most creatures would have been gushing blood, yet none came from this thing. Critical Hit, but the card pulled caused bleed damage on a creature immune to bleed, so I just doubled. Her second strike was more of a scrape than a cut.

Round 2:

Success: Half Damage or Effect
Fail: Full Damage or Effect
Crit Fail: Double Damage or Effect

The monk managed to land one punch on the Mephit.

A slight twinge of deja vu washes over you of the Piper's lair due to the lantern-lit corridors of the mine. Good thing they were not purplish lights, but the warm glow of orangey-yellow.

As you make the first right, Alric holds up a fist to indicate everyone stops moving. He looked up and pointed out three Mephits as they suddenly descended from the stalactites from above. Scout's Warning

One dropped directly behind you, one in front of you and the final clung to the wall of to the side.

Okay so heads up, the next few fights are going to be a theater of the mind setup. This is to help get through the smaller fights faster as they shouldn't be too complicated.

As you begin to enter the mine, a mystical barrier shoots up and prevents Fel and Vei from entering. The angel moved up and touched the barrier, it rippled like the surface of a pond when touched. [This is.......very old magic. One that keeps other planar beings from passing through. I cannot pass through it, and unfortunately Fel as how our connection works. But this would explain why the Mephits have not left the mine. You will have to proceed without us.]

I plan on having her out in such a way that if she does come back it shouldn't be an issue.

So before we continue, are we good with dropping Fel? Haven't heard from her in a bit.

The right guard answered, "Lanterns line the tunnels. To get to Shaft thirty-seven, you'll go straight through three intersections, turn right at the fourth, go until you come to a T junction, turn left, go past the next four junctions turn right, then left, then two rights. You should be at Shaft thirty-seven."

The left guard took the parchment, looked at it, then up at all of you, "Unusual? You mean other than the Mephits that have been acting like Imps, no. Are you sure the lot of you can handle this? There's a lot of them down there."

Cardren:
You don't sense any deception.

Illa slightly blanched as each approached, but seemed to relax eventually.

Getting to the mine entrance, you see two dwarven guards that cross their halberds. One of them then spoke, "What is your business?"

Any roll that has the Secret Trait (as linked above) are rolled by me. But for this, I'll roll it. Much more fun that way.

The Boss looked up at Zaranna with an incredulous look, "Kristoff? This whole thing started when he disappeared in Shaft thirty-seven. Hard working lad, though I to keep a local smith from lynching him. Accusations of impropriety and all. Fiancé though? Never heard of that. Still, come inside."

Ushering you inside his office, you see poor Illa in the corner trying not quiver in fear. Pulling a piece of parchment, he scribbled on it briefly then handed it to you, "That should allow you access to the mines. If you can get rid of those damned Dirt Gargoyles and get up back up into production, I'll pay you three hundred gold. Deal?"
