Faction Card: Skill ranks

In addition, one of my chronicles has a boon that says:
"You may check off the fist box before this boon in spring, the second in summer, the third in autumn, and the fourth in winter, using real-world seasons."
That allows the casting of a low-level SLA relevant to the opposite season. I intended to check these out of combat, but things got messy enough that I didn't want to derail anything at the time. Checking them all grants a different boon.
So... can I check one or more, and if so which ones? It looks like Onjatan's been in this game since January, so he's been here through all four seasons.

No land grab yet, and I would be open to playing the deeper levels (assuming nothing comes up in the meantime)

Yep, seems like you can check all four boxes! :-)

Emerald Spire slides |

Chronicles should have been emailed to all of you and the session has been reported. Let me know if you see any problems or if you didn't receive your sheet.

Thanks again to all of you for playing and again my apologies for my absences and delays.

Emerald Spire slides |

Huh, sorry about the formatting of that - not sure what happened. Thanks Yanda for fixing it.

Land Grab costs 2 prestige, correct. However it's not worth much unless you have filled in enough to get rewards from the Land Rush sheet - do you have a copy? I can send you if not. You can study the sheet before deciding whether or not you want to land grab. My character filled in the whole sheet when I played but she went through every level of the spire.

Emerald Spire slides |

Well, again, I'm horribly sorry for how long this has taken!

Here's the link for rpgchronicles:
https://www.rpgchronicles.net/session/657eca09-c864-4d00-945d-5b1fc5b1bd57/ pregame

Please fill in your info so I can generate the chronicles.

As I think I mentioned, I'm going to take a break from GM-ing (or playing) PF for a bit - I'm burned out - but I do still love the game and would like to finish GM-ing the Emerald Spire once I'm reenergized so please let me know if you are interested in continuing at that point (and I promise that we'll move at a more normal pace then!).

Emerald Spire slides |

Glad to see the site is back up - busy prepping kid's birthday party for tomorrow. Will post after that.

Emerald Spire slides |

Sorry everyone. Real life has been kicking my butt. Will get this done, I promise!

Emerald Spire slides |

Sorry everyone. Yes, I've clearly hit my limit for the moment. I'll get the chronicles issued this weekend.

Emerald Spire slides |

Sorry everyone - I was pretty sick - playing catch up now. Will get us going again sometime this week or weekend.

Emerald Spire slides |

Hi everyone, sorry this is still dragging on. I'm home sick with covid which will hopefully afford me some time to get caught up here. Haven't forgotten you but feeling pretty awful at the moment.

Emerald Spire slides |

I'm really sorry everyone. I'm obviously pretty burned out and will probably take a break after we finish this level. Please know that I haven't forgotten you or abandoned the game. However, at the moment I'm dealing with a double whammy of real life stuff: my kid has just come down with covid (I'm in the clear so far but I'm expecting that my exposure risk is pretty high) and my classes for the new semester start on Thursday.

Sorry and thanks again for your understanding. It's super tedious, especially in the middle of a fight, but I've only got the bandwidth I have at the moment. Will get a post up when I can.

Emerald Spire slides |

Sorry everyone. Got bogged down in real life stuff. Will get a post up asap.

Yandra retreats to the far end of the chamber and heals herself. It looks like you put yourself inside the web so I've moved you back one square so that you are outside of it. I believe it extends 20' radius in each direction, including up and down.

Shiva blocks the door with a physical embodiment of her music! Nice move!

Onjatan stows Araga's unconscious form out of harm's way and steps back 5 feet. I've adjusted your position.

Mykel is up!

(Mykel hasn't posted for a few days so if they don't post by tomorrow I'll just put them on delay to move us forward. Think about what y'all want to do - I think it's unlikely that the Seugathi are going to get the door open with that roll, at least this round, so you all will probably have another turn to do what you want. Bear in mind that 20' of web will provide total cover (and 5' to 15' provides cover) so you will have to position yourselves carefully if you are planning to stay and fight at range.

Green - dmg;

Red - 14 dmg;

Yellow - 8 dmg;

Onjatan attempts to hold the door shut and both Yanda and Mykel try to help.

GM screen:
Yellow: delay until after Red.
Green: nauseated. Move to get out of the wasp's square.
Red: move action to attempt to open the door. Then standard to try to force it open when it realizes the door is being held.
Yellow: after Red fails to open the door, move action to get out of the wasps' square.
Fast healing: all three heal 5.

Red Str check to open the door: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Onjatan feels the creature attempt to open the door, first with a normal pull, and then with a strong tug when it realizes that the door is being held. Fortunately, the creature's strength is not up to the task. For now at least.

The door is closed and all the auras are currently blocked, so no need for any Will saves or Confusion rolls. You are all Not-Confused. :-)

Them wasps though...:
Yellow dmg: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8
Red dmg: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12
Y Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
R Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

In their minds the pathfinders hear the telepathic sound of cursing - it appears that the Seugathi are not fond of Yanda's wasps.

Pathfinders are up! The bold may act "normally." Note that although the door is (temporarily) closed that is just because you beat its Str check. You all know that as soon as the door is opened you will all have to immediately (before any of your actions, readied or otherwise) make 3 Will saves vs 3 confusion auras. Also, the area within the blue template is still webbing (except for Mykel and Shiva's squares, where it has been burned away). If you decide to retreat you have a path along the Western walkway that doesn't pass through the webbing (and if you do decide to do this, I'll note that you saw that the Seugathi are large and would therefore have to squeeze through the door once they got it open). The Yellow and Green mind fogs are no longer relevant (everyone has passed their saves except poor Mykel who is definitely still under the -10 effect (this has nothing to do with the door being closed), so I've removed their templates to make it easier to see the map. What would you like to do? I'm going to wait to resolve any actions until everyone has a chance to chime in since I think your decisions here could be very impactful.

Mykel Therinor wrote:
ugh...i posted earlier...or so i thought...i'm delaying until we are ready to go...so no action other than helping holkd the door...

No worries - I just wanted to be sure that you weren't trying to do something before I moved the action forward. I'll treat your action as an Aid attempt on holding the door.

Mykel Aid another DC 10: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

Emerald Spire slides |

Yanda isn't up yet. Only Mykel has actions still available before the seugathi go again. If you want to try to hold the door shut (either by aiding Onjatan or by making your own check) I'll allow that. Also, Yanda, note that the Blue template is the Webbing (except for the squares that Mykel and Shiva are currently in, where it has been burned away). I'm not sure if you would have had sufficient movement to reach the far side of the room without going through the web?

Emerald Spire slides |
Mykel Therinor wrote:

Mykel collects himself as e shakes his head to clear it.

Ok...everyone good? I can deal with these things...Yanda..step back...on my go, we open the door...deal? he says as he gives everyone a chance to get ready.

Just to clarify: the way auras work, as soon as you open the door (or they open it), you'll all need to make three Will saves vs confusion. That'll be true even if you have a readied action, such as 'attack as soon as the door is opened.'

Emerald Spire slides |

Hey everyone, I want to apologize again for letting us get bogged down like this, especially when we are so near to the end of the level. Honestly, I think I'm a bit burned out and especially because this particular fight, while quite interesting and challenging in many ways, is also sort of tedious and difficult to GM, especially in the PbP format. I think the last turn back a couple of weeks ago took me over 2 hours to process! Anyway, I'm not trying to make excuses, just asking for your understanding.

Emerald Spire slides |
Onjatan wrote:
I think closing the door is at least worth a try, and probably better value than punching Red once in the face.

It's a Move action to close the door so if you want to use a Standard action to hold the door shut (Str check, which would be opposed by Red's Str check if it tries to open the door) I'll allow that (you would have to give up removing your goggles though since that's also an action). Just let me know if you want to do that and roll me a Str check so I have it if needed.

Emerald Spire slides |
Onjatan wrote:
@GM: I'm assuming the effect that Onjatan saved against doesn't trigger the "attack back" state. It's definitely an attack, using the "breaks invisibility" definition, but given the description I don't think Onjatan is really able to tell that Red did a thing at him. If I'm wrong, I can definitely switch to full attacking Red.

Yeah, technically speaking it's an attack (a spell) but as you note there would be no way for Onjatan to know that the vision came from Red. Also, if I don't give you guys a chance to do something helpful when you get lucky enough to roll "act normally" (which is itself only a 25% chance, and that only when you haven't been commanded), then I can't see any way for you all to ever do anything yourselves in this fight.

Firewarden Yanda wrote:

@Onjatan

We closed the doors once before and they jut reopened it and the auras just continued. I think all it will do is soak up a move action on their part.

This is true. Auras are really a pain to manage in PbP, especially when there are multiple ones going on.

Yanda punches herself in the face. Lightly. This absorbs the last of Ablative Barrier; the damage is all non-lethal as a result.

Onjatan sees an apparition of his fearsome grandfather but fortunately recognizes it as a mere illusion. Then he closes the door, but not before he recalls that the creature standing in front of him is a Seugathi, a worm-like monster that has a hideous face of eyes and hooked jaws. It wields a wand and a sword in its twin tentacle tails. These large aberrations, he recalls, are typically chaotic evil. They are resistant to spells and to bludgeoning damage.

Shiva clears away the webbing from herself and Mykel. I'll note web-free squares with a small frame on those squares on the map.

Mykel is up (and no longer grappled since Shiva has cleared the web from his square. With the door closed, he feels like himself again, though his mind is still rather foggy. The confusion effect is interrupted by the closing of the door but the mind fog (Will penalty) persists.

Everyone, I'm just going to roll all y'all's Will saves as a batch - otherwise this is going to get completely bogged down. Feel free to use a reroll or other ability on any of the rolls I make for you if you feel like you would have done so had you made the roll.

Will Saves vs AMY:

Yanda Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 reroll vs. control, talisman of freedom, greater pentacle talisman (2nd save)
Shiva Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24 +4 vs. bardic performance, language-dependent, and sonic
Onjatan Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 +1 vs mind-affecting, extra +1 if spell or SLA (+2 if psychic source). +1 (morale) to allies within 10’ vs mind-affecting Onjatan isn’t already suffering from
Araga Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Elemental immunities
Mykel will: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (8) + 8 - 10 = 6
Yanda, Onjatan, and Mykel are all confused.

Will Saves vs AMG:

Yanda Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 reroll vs. control, talisman of freedom, greater pentacle talisman (2nd save)
Shiva Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23 +4 vs. bardic performance, language-dependent, and sonic
Onjatan Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 +1 vs mind-affecting, extra +1 if spell or SLA (+2 if psychic source). +1 (morale) to allies within 10’ vs mind-affecting Onjatan isn’t already suffering from
Araga Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Elemental immunities
Mykel will: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 10 = 15
Onjatan and Mykel are confused.

Will Saves vs AMR:

Yanda Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 reroll vs. control, talisman of freedom, greater pentacle talisman (2nd save)
Shiva Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 +4 vs. bardic performance, language-dependent, and sonic
Onjatan Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 +1 vs mind-affecting, extra +1 if spell or SLA (+2 if psychic source). +1 (morale) to allies within 10’ vs mind-affecting Onjatan isn’t already suffering from
Araga Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Elemental immunities
Mykel will: 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 10 = 18
Shiva is confused.

GM screen:
Yellow: immediate action to direct Mykel.
Green: immediate action to direct Onjatan. Can't direct due to nauseated.
Red: immediate action to direct Shiva.
Yanda Y confusion roll: 1d100 ⇒ 57
Onjatan Y confusion roll: 1d100 ⇒ 20
AMY failed saves: Yanda 1, Onjatan 1, Mykel 1
AMG failed saves: Onjatan 2, Mykel 1
AMR failed saves: Shiva 1
Yellow uses Wand of Web to cast a web through the doorway (this counts as an attack).
Green uses a single move action to move out of the swarm - can't do anything else due to the nauseated condition. Fast Healing 5 so Green no longer has any dmg.
Red - 5' step and casts Phantasmal Killer

Mykel:
You hear a telepathic voice in your mind directing you to attack whomever is nearest to you. Somehow this seems very reasonable to you. Unless someone else attacks you before your turn, this would be Shiva the webbing since they attacked you last.

Shiva:
You hear a telepathic voice in your mind directing you to attack whomever is nearest to you. Somehow this seems very reasonable to you. Unless someone else attacks you before your turn, this would be Onjatan the webbing since they attacked you last.

Yanda:
You are confused and feel an irresistible urge to punch yourself in the face, doing 1d8+Str dmg to yourself. If someone else attacks you before your turn then you will instead attack them.

Onjatan:
You are confused but - the gods smile upon you - you may act normally this round! (but note spoiler below regarding the spell that targets you).

A spell trigger word is heard from somewhere behind Red and slightly to the left. A mass of sticky Blue webbing appears amidst the pathfinders, narrowly missing Onjatan and Yanda, but landing right atop Shiva and Mykel!

Reflex Saves vs Blue Web:

Shiva Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 +4 vs. bardic performance, language-dependent, and sonic
Mykel Reflex: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17

Mykel, let me know if you have a reroll and want to use it on that nat 1 (though as your friendly GM I'd say you might want to save it...)

The webbing is treated like the web spell.

Shiva easily dodges the webbing but Mykel is caught by it and is now grappled!

On the plus side, this counts as an attack, freeing both Shiva and Mykel from the obligation to continue the cycle of confusion attacks (unless someone attacks them before their next turn).

The Red monstrosity standing in front of Onjatan and Yanda appears to be visibly healing its minor injuries sustained by the wasps. It steps 5' to move away from the swarm of wasps and glares at one of the foes in front of it...
Yanda 1, Onjatan 2: 1d2 ⇒ 2
... and then casts a horribly sounding spell at brave Onjatan. No option for an AoO due to being confused.

Onjatan:
A nightmare vision appears. Only you can see it but it appears to be your worst most awful fear. I encourage you to roleplay this as you see fit. Please make a Will save and then, possibly a Fort save. This is a spell (fear, mind-affecting, illusion (phantasm)). If you have appropriate chronicle boons this is a good time to use 'em!.

Round 3/Round 4

GM Screen:

Wasp dmg to Y: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
Wasp dmg to G: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4
Wasp dmg to R: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5
Y Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
G Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
R Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Pathfinders are up! The bold may act. Note your individual spoilers for instructions regarding your current mental state!

Also note that the area of the Blue template is under the effect of a Web spell. It counts as difficult terrain. Moving within it requires a CMB or Escape Artist check to not become grappled. Anyone further than 5' away has cover; further than 20' has total cover. You all know that the webbing is flammable.

Onjatan wrote:

Since it might come up again (especially with the way this fight seems to be set up)...

GM: For "attack nearest creature", how many attacks? This is specifically when rolling on the confusion table, rather than hitting back against someone that attacked you.

As you've said, the "fight back" clause in confusion will trigger a full attack. The target there has confirmed they're definitely hostile.

My reasoning for "one attack" is that the victim is confused. He's not dominated, he doesn't "know" his target is an enemy. He just isn't sure what's going on, but thinks nearestCreature is a valid target. Probably.

My understanding - based on how it's always been played at the tables I've been at - is that a confused character attacks to the best of their ability (i.e. uses a full attack rather than a single attack, uses their main weapon rather than their fist, etc.) but does not need to use optional abilities that would require them to use some strategy (e.g. lunge) and cannot use abilities that would require some level of concentration (e.g. a confused magus would full attack with their weapon but could not also cast a spell and use spellstrike with it).

In her confusion, Shiva swings at her own friends, fortunately missing both of them!

End of Round 2, start of Round 3

Yanda punches herself lightly in the face, and her ablative barrier makes it even less impactful.

Wasp swarm turns L (1) or R (2): 1d2 ⇒ 2

Yanda's angry wasps can be heard buzzing around and although the fog in the room prevents them from being seen, it sounds as though they have come closer and are stinging the Red monstrosity in front of the door.

GM screen:
Wasp swarm vs Red: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6
Wasp swarm vs Green: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5
Red Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Green Fort DC 13 vs Distraction: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Green: 5 dmg and nauseated 1 round.

Onjatan is up and must attack Shiva

Already under the pernicious influence of the yellow mist, the new green mist doesn't seem to make Mykel any worse off than he already was. He headbutts the pommel of his sword, to minor effect.

Shiva is unperturbed by the new green mist.

Shiva is up!

Shiva only:
You feel confused (as in the Confusion condition). You hear a telepathic voice in your mind, urging you to attack the nearest creature. Somehow this seems perfectly reasonable to you. On your next turn, use your full round to attack whomever is nearest to you when your turn comes around (you can roll or choose if there is a tie); this is *instead* of rolling on the Confusion chart. Please roleplay this as you see fit.

Correct, a mind-affecting spell. You are now immune to MFG.

Everyone hears the sound of casting from within the room and then another thin layer of mist appears around the group. Map updated with Green template

Yanda Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 reroll vs. control, talisman of freedom, greater pentacle talisman (2nd save)

26-50 Do nothing but babble incoherently
51-75 Deal 1d8 + Str dmg to yourself
76-100 Attack nearest creature (in the case of a tie, you choose or you can roll to determine)

Green is already on the ground (didn't previously levitate) so it only takes a single move action to move up to behind Red. Which puts everyone in range of Green's aura. Standard action still available, after seeing the result of Onjatan's Will save vs the aura.

Onjata, I need another Will save (AMG); this is mind-affecting, but not a spell, not psychic, not a curse, and not visual dependent.

Everyone, sorry for how slow-moving this is. There are a bunch of weirdly interacting parts here - it would flow much smoother at a face to face table. Let me know if you just want me to roll your Will saves for you (or under which conditions you would want to use a reroll or other ability) - that will also speed things up a lot.

It's still not (quite) yet y'all's turns.

Emerald Spire slides |

Yes, mind-affecting (you can probably assume that all or most of the Will saves in this fight are going to be mind-affecting). No, not a spell.

Yes, Onjatan is no longer confused (it expired after 1 round and you passed your save the next time around).

Hmm, this may come up in future rounds so please let me know if you can find some rules language to support that. I was going off of what the spell says - it seems pretty clear that the swarm won't independently follow after a target without you using a standard action to direct it. But in any case it doesn't matter for this round.

Yanda moves into the yellow mist but is unhindered by it. She drinks and then vomits out a swarm of wasps. What could possibly go wrong?

Yanda, you'll need to tell me which direction you want the swarm to move. My understanding is that you start them in a particular direction and they just fly straight in that direction (so you can't really have them "track" anything). It will require a standard action on future turns to direct them in a different direction. Also, are they staying at your elevation (5' up) or flying up/down at an angle?

Mykel delays.

Araga moved outside the room in this post, right before she ate a half-dozen magic missiles

Was that a reposition or a drag? If drag, Onjatan would be next to the door and Shiva next to Mykel. Mostly matters for whether he's able to close the door or not.

Thanks for the reminders re DR and when Araga moved.

Fine with me to say that Shiva's CMB was a Drag maneuver, which would indeed position Onjatan to use a Move action to close the door.

Sorry for the posting delay - busy few days getting ready for a trip - I'll be traveling with my kid for the next week but I expect I'll be able to find the time to post but it just might be a little intermittent.

Araga manages to avoid things getting even worse for her and she rests, unconscious, blissfully unaware of the chaos raging around her.

Onjatan hits himself in the face (I forget - does being confused cancel your DR or not? I remember I ruled on this awhile back but I can't remember what the ruling was! Lol.) For now, 4 net dmg presuming DR still effective.

Onjatan, to answer your questions: your attack/dmg bonus will apply to Yellow. Re your question about Stoic Dignity, good question and I could see it being ruled either way but I'm going with the latter. Keeping all of that straight was part of why I messed up earlier and needed to retcon the start of this encounter.

As the wispy Yellow mist envelops Mykel, he feels his mental resources weakening. Mykel, you now have a -10 (!) on Wisdom checks and Will saves.

Shiva resists the power of the mist and steps forward and - just - manages to reposition the confused Onjatan.

Onjatan emerges from his confusion and regains his normal mind. Onjatan, you still have your Move and Swift actions available (Standard used punching yourself).

Yanda and Mykel still have all their actions available; Onjatan has Move/Swift available. The door is still open and (unless I missed something?) Araga's unconscious body is still in the room.

Shiva - 1 dmg; Lowlight vision; DR 1/-; resist acid/cold/elec/fire 5; resist negative 10; Bardic Performance (+1 & frost to party weapons & Spirit Totem: 20% miss chance vs non-adjacent, 1d8 vs adjacent (living), +14 slam 15' 1d8+7 (vs living)); Will save (YMF) needed;

Everyone can hear the sound of spell casting from within the chamber and then a thin mist appears on top of the blue mist that is already filling the room. This mist does not block vision. See the Yellow template on the map.

I need Will saves (YMF) from Onjatan, Araga, Shiva, and Mykel. This has the enchantment, void elemental (compulsion), and mind-affecting tags and it is a spell.

Everyone hears the sound of a trigger word being spoken and then three bolts of force fly out of the fog and strike Araga!
Force dmg: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 3, 3) + 3 = 12

From elsewhere in the room - perhaps a bit more to the right? - another trigger word is said aloud and yet more bolts of force target the tiny spy!
Force dmg: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 2, 1) + 3 = 9

Araga collapses to the ground, unconscious and dying!

Round 1 ---> Round 2

Pathfinders are up (roll your Will saves first but then you can post your actions). The bold may act! Good luck!

Liberty's Edge

Does anyone know of a Riddick d20 system or have any advice on how best to implement a setting that takes into account the way the Riddickverse works with all of its variations on humanity and strange powers, such as those displayed in the director cuts and games. Any advice would help.

Wooden Promises is an adventure module filled with intrigue, strange requests, undead creatures, and battles of epic proportions! The primary locations in this module are Aspen Keep and The Tunnels, which is a "small" dungeon crawl.

This project came from a late night discussion between my best friend and I about his voice acting career. We made a sample track and thought why not add voice acting to an adventure module for extra depth and immersion!
